"Fantastic Four" - DVD Review
Skip Down to Special FeaturesREVIEWED BY Brad Brevet
I happen to be one of the few critics that had fun with Fantastic Four. I am not a comic book geek so I don't know anything about these characters. I have no idea how they actually became "fantastic" and I know nothing about their world. I went into the theater with low expectations and got a bit more than I anticipated, which is probably a good reason why I liked it more than most, but even here on DVD I enjoyed it once again, albeit not as much as I did the first time.

Fantastic Four is a film centered on, get this, four ordinary people who suddenly acquire some extraordinary powers during a scientific trip to space in which they were exposed to some kind of cosmic cloud of radiation. The film however requires five main characters as we need a baddie, which leaves us with Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd), Susan Storm (Jessica Alba), Johnny Storm (Chris Evans), Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) and Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon). Doom, of course, being the baddie I referred to.

When the aforementioned scientific space trip goes wrong Doom's company goes down the crapper and while the other four "victims" of the storm feel it is necessary to use their powers for good, Doom believes it is good reason to destroy those he blames for the fallout of his company; or is it that he just doesn't like them; or is it that he is mad at the world? Okay, okay, okay I will give you this. The plotline stinks. To tell you the truth, the only good parts of the film are those involving Chris Evans as Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and the scenes where Jessica Alba was on screen and not talking. Granted, she likes to talk in this one, but that is what mute buttons are made for and damn she is hot!

I enjoyed this film thanks to the dumb entertainment it provides for a little over 100 minutes, but I do hope they get a much better script for the sequel and I also hope Jessica Alba improves on her acting. She may be hot, but she stunk it up didn't she?

As for this disc's features there really isn't much to write home about. The commentary is rather dull, because guess what, the real star of the movie is absent. It is only Alba, Chiklis and Gruffudd in the booth doing the recording, Evans sat it out as did McMahon. There is an X-Men 3 "Look Inside", but it shows you virtually nothing as Avi Arad talks about how great the X-Men are.

You then have the traditional making-of featurette, a really bad behind the scenes home video of the press tour shot by Alba, some bring deleted scenes, one that involves Mr. Fantastic morphing his head into a supposed Wolverine look-a-like, some bad music videos and a few Fox behind-the-scenes features, one of which is the best feature on the disc. The feature I am referring to is when they show the making of the bridge action sequence in which they had to recreate over 200 feet of the Brooklyn Bridge up in Vancouver, it is actually quite impressive.

Overall, buying or renting this DVD is a crapshoot. I would normally say that if you were a comic book fan this is a no-brainer, go buy it, but it seems to me those are the people that hated it the most. While there are those out there that enjoyed it as good popcorn fun there is also a very loud opposition to that opinion. So for what it is worth, I will recommend you rent before you buy, anything else you do is up to you and not my fault.
