Domestic Box-Office Total
Eurotrip (Unrated) is a Universal Studios Home Entertainment release and is rated
R.
The running time is 1 hr. 31 mins.
One thing is for sure, once you are done watching all the special features you will certainly be tired of writer/directors Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer as they seem to take over the DVD at every possible moment, but let’s first talk about the movie.
I did not like this movie in the theater as it doesn't work in the theater but may work better when you are home drunk and have
NOTHING better to do. This is a film that translates better on the small screen as the only selling point the film has is nudity, which is very much taken advantage of here on the Unrated version of the DVD, as it gives you little to no option rather than to take a peek at thousands of happy hats bouncing around the screen.
Knowing the movie is only an hour and a half long I popped it into the DVD player expecting to get a few laughs, which the movie does have, but the overall attempt to give you as much skin as possible actually takes away from the comedy, which is barely there at all.
As you will learn from the first of the two commentaries with the three dunces that made the movie it was originally set to be titled
Ugly Americans but quickly got a face lift to a more recognizable name taking advantage of the earlier comedy success
Road Trip, which I happened to love! The only problem here is that
Road Trip knew how to take advantage of the nude scenes giving the horny teenager what they want while at the same time a load of humorous scenes, it also helped they had Sean William Scott and not Jacob Pitts as there sole source of comedy.
Nevertheless, lets take a look at the special features where you will quickly learn are almost all better than the film itself, if that is saying anything.
I already mentioned there is a commentary with the creators of
Eurotrip, but there is also a second commentary with the same three guys called the "Party Along Commentary", which is with the same three guys except this time they play a drinking game along with talking about the film in which they drink every time someone drinks or swears or when there is nudity on the screen. Sounds sort of funny right? Well after the first ten minutes you are so tired of hearing three grown men, whom are obviously all three dorks that made this film just so they could see a naked woman, saying "Drink" every ten seconds as they get turned on by their own work rendering this commentary just as unbearable as the first.
Next up we have your DVD regulars; deleted scenes and a gag reel, which are okay just as they are okay on all DVDs but nothing special here.
Now, I want to focus on three features in which, once again, feature our three favorite filmmakers. The first is a feature called "Nude Beach Exposed" where we get another look at the nude beach scene where our three male stars end up on a beach filled with nothing but naked men, like we wanted another look. The one thing that caught my attention in this seen was when David Mandel says, "When three heterosexual men sit down to write a teen movie you go, "What do I want to see? and the answer is 50 male penises." He says this as a joke knowing that is not what people want to see, so does that make the scene funny or unwatchable? The answer was the latter for me, making this feature along with the actual scene in the film worthless.
Next is the "How to Pick a Director" which is just a feature showing how the three men decided to randomly choose a director since the Director's Guild frowns on three people being listed as the director of a movie, but the one feature that I actually appreciated from these three was called "
Eurotrip Bootleg" where they feature a bootlegged copy of the movie that was picked up in China in March. The three of them were obviously frustrated that their crappy film was bootlegged, but to spite the pirates they included five minutes of the copy on the DVD showing just how bad it was. The best part was the quote, "So fuck you pirates!" and I couldn't agree more.
Another feature I actually liked was "The Music of Eurotrip" where you get to watch the full version of Matt Damon's cameo as he sings "Scotty Doesn't Know" from the film along with a sing-a-long version. The song is actually quite catchy and easily the funniest part of the film.
Finally, besides the worthless other features (cast/crew bios, script, production notes) are the two additional scene indexes called "Nude Scene Index" and "Unrated Scene Index" which instead of giving you a full list of the scenes to choose from give you a quick link to either the scenes in the movie where there is nudity or where you have additional footage added to the film, making it "Unrated".
I had to laugh the first time I stepped into the "Nude Scene Index" just because it was so unique, plus it does give you a quick link to what the filmmakers obviously feel are the brightest points of the film, and ultimately end up being the only reason to watch it.
My advice if you buy or rent
Eurotrip is to skip the film entirely and go straight to the "Music of
Eurotrip" section to watch the best part, and then to the "Nude Scene Index" since that is really the reason you even have it in your player. As far as teen film goes this may be the end of a dying breed which started with the smash hit
Scream and has not been able to match the comedic value of the
American Pie trilogy.
