"Disturbia" - HD DVD Review
Skip Down to Special FeaturesREVIEWED BY Brad Brevet
Disturbia is a movie made for home video, because it is one of those brainless thrillers that attracts you with an interesting idea (the serial killer next door) and lulls you to sleep until the final moments when something truly interesting happens. Oddly enough Disturbia did rather well with critics considering this set back receiving a 66% rating at RottenTomatoes and was actually a massive success as it brought in $80 million on a budget of $20 million. Now that is some green Paramount Pictures like to see.

Why do I say then it is good for home video, especially after I gave it a "D+" in my theatrical review? Because, for the most part, everything is better at home. Very few movies are actually enhanced by seeing them in theaters. There is nothing cinematic about Disturbia, it is just a straight-forward thriller that offers nothing in the thrills department until the very end. This is an adolescent journey through puberty for 90 minutes until the satisfying 15 minute finale.

As for this HD DVD I think it is a decent buy for those of you that simply like to bulk up your collection. There are plenty of "bad" movies that always work when you just want something dumb to throw in the player and Disturbia will fill that role. Hell, I don't even particularly like this movie and expect to watch it a few more times before it is replaced by some other mediocre flick.

The presentation and audio is up to high-definition standards and even the majority of the special features are offered in high-def. Included are a group of deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, a pop-up quiz that plays during the film, a group of outtakes and bloopers, a music video and a photo gallery. Finishing off the features is an audio commentary with director D.J. Caruso and stars Shia LaBeouf and Sarah Roemer.

Of all the features the commentary is definitely the best as the pop-up trivia that goes on during the film is more of a nuisance, especially when it will tell you the name of the band featured on the shirt the actor is wearing when it is clearly legible by using my own eyes and reading comprehension skills.

Like I said, Disturbia will beef up your collection, but it won't make it any more impressive. This is a second rate thriller that never really thrills as it gets caught up in the journey through adolescence more than it focuses on actually scaring you.
