"Desperate Housewives - The Complete Third Season" - DVD Review

Desperate Housewives - The Complete Third Season is a Buena Vista Home Entertainment release and is rated .
The second season of "Desperate Housewives" was nowhere near as good as the first, especially with the very disappointing character Betty Applewhite played by Alfre Woodard and everything that involved her family and the rest of Wisteria Lane. Luckily she moved on and the third season scandals get a little more like the first season, but this isn't to say there aren't some serious issues that need to be corrected.

The central storyline heading into the third season was Mike Delfino's coma suffered when he was hit by a car just before he was going to propose to Susan (Hatcher). Cut to season three we see Susan in the hospital every day taking care of Mike, just waiting for him to wake up so they can start just where they left off. Things get complicated as Dougray Scott enters the picture as Ian Hainsworth who is in the hospital waiting for his wife to come out of a coma.

Meanwhile Edie is waiting for her chance to scam on Mike, Lynette gets shot while her husband opens a pizzeria, Gabrielle continues divorce proceedings and Bree makes her way down the altar for just one of the show's three weddings this season. Come to think of it, why is this called "The Dirty Laundry Edition" when "Here Comes the Bride Edition" makes so much more sense. There is plenty more mayhem including almost affairs, teen pregnancy, gunfire and bodies in freezers, but this is the good, what about the bad?

I only have one real complaint about the third season and that is Bree's husband Orson Hodge played by Kyle MacLachlan, sorry this guy is just not fun to watch. MacLachlan has all the onscreen presence of a peanut. He is far from interesting and his acting makes you sick to your stomach. A good "Death to Orson" campaign should be started somewhere... anywhere... Please... SOMEONE!

While the show can't quite seem to match the cliffhanger moments of the first season, this third season ends on a very interesting note that could make for quite the interesting fourth season provided my "Death to Orson" campaign gets carried out.

Feature wise this set is the barest of them all as there are no commentaries and just a few featurettes on the sixth disc including deleted scenes, a blooper reel, a look at the Spanish language knock-off, creator Marc Cherry's favorite scenes, a look behind-the-scenes of all the weddings and a profile on Eva Longoria. Speaking of Eva, it is nice to see her not being flouted around on ESPN and back where she should be seen. As far as campaigns are concerned a "No More Eva Longoria on ESPN" campaign needs to also get started.

The third season of "Desperate Housewives" is a definite improvement on the second, but the fourth season is really going to have to try harder to duplicate the first if this show wants to have any kind of serious long-term legs.
