I feel like I have reviewed this film one billion times. I reviewed the 2-disc DVD, the 4-disc extended edition and now here I am with the all new Blu-ray release, which features a little bit from both the 2-disc and 4-disc editions, albeit not all of either release as well as a brand new Blu-ray exclusive "game" on the second disc. However, if you are looking to buy this release for anything more than an audio and visual high definition upgrade then turn away now. The special features you have already seen and the game (if you really want to call it that) is boring.
First, the film. The first time I saw The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe it sort of hit with a thud. It didn't really impress me. I didn't hate it. I just, felt nothing toward it. I was kind to it in my 2-Disc edition review and the 4-disc didn't really add much to make me jump head over heels. Finally, with this Blu-ray release I think I can officially say I don't really like this movie.
Outside of some truly spectacular sets and visuals this story is such a bumbler that it never gains any steam. You just roll along until the inevitable ending without any kind of worry or fear the Pevensie kids will ever not achieve their goal. Oh, they had to battle a raging river and float down on a piece of ice? Yowsers! Someone call the ratings board, this is getting intense.
Other than the visuals the only thing new on this Blu-ray release is the "Battle for Narnia" game that plays almost more like some kind of old school "Dungeons and Dragons" roll-of-the-dice game and it had me bored stiff within minutes. Perhaps younger audiences will find some joy in playing it, but I found it to be a complete misfire.
I can understand why Disney is releasing this Blu-ray as we approach the release of Prince Caspian, but I am not sure if there are enough Blu-ray owners out there to make it worthwhile. One thing I know is that the one extra Blu-ray feature certainly doesn't make it a must buy, and upgrading from one of your prior DVD releases is silly to say the least.
