Black Hawk Down (Extended Cut) is a Sony Pictures Home Entertainment release and has not yet been rated by the MPAA.

The running time is 2 hrs. 32 mins..

Let's see, Ridley Scott has given us sci-fi battles with Alien, medieval battles with Kingdom of Heaven, Roman battles with Gladiator and with Black Hawk Down he takes us into the heart of a war we all can feel some connection to with Black Hawk Down.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has really milked this film for all its worth as I count at least five different home video releases of this movie already and there is a Blu-ray Disc release just around the corner on August 15. So what is it about this movie? Is it really that good? Does it warrant this extended cut?

First off I don't think this extended cut is all that much to brag about, primarily because it is not specifically endorsed by Ridley, as he has with the previous director's cuts of Alien, Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator. All three of the extended versions of those films were accompanied by an introduction from Scott telling you why this cut was being released and what differences to look out for. With Alien I didn't think the cut was all that much different, and Gladiator had a few new goodies here and there, then Kingdom of Heaven was like a completely different movie. Black Hawk Down is unfortunately no big deal. There have been eight minutes of footage thrown back into the film and since it has been so long that I even saw the original I wasn't able to notice anything different.

On top of the feature you also get the Frontline documentary "Ambush in Mogadishu", not exactly worth a mention.

Overall I would say buy this if you don't already own a copy of Black Hawk Down and you want one. Otherwise fork over a little extra for the 3-Disc version or wait a little while longer for the Blu-ray version which is sure to kick much more ass than this one does despite it being digitally remastered.
