Upon reviewing
season one of "Battlestar Galactica" I finished up saying "the second season will need some serious adrenaline injections to keep me interested." That being said I hoped the wish could come true, but right off the bat the dream suffered a blow as I learned this is
only the first half of the second season.
What the hell? First half? Since when do seasons get released in portions?
I guess Sci-Fi and Universal can't figure out if this show has the legs for a third season and this DVD set is simply a test. A test on whether or not people would buy it and then tune in to the second half of the second season, which begins on January 13. Then they will see if a third season should go into production. This is my assumption, but it sounds quite logical to me.
So, we get 10 episodes (10 lousy episodes mind you) for $31.99. Then we get to wait for a while and get 10 more episodes for another $31.99. Then we just might find out that, like most sci-fi shows as of late, "Battlestar Galactica" is going to be cancelled and not return for a third season. Once again, it sounds logical to me, but who knows.
Honestly the worst part of this whole thing is that the marketing for this DVD says nothing about it only being the first half of a season. Consumers that found the show on DVD and don't pay close attention may buy this thinking they are getting an entire season's worth of episodes. Too bad, you aren't.
It doesn't even mention how many episodes are included in the set, 10 is the answer. Ten episodes for $31.99, $2.90 an episode. I guess the alternative at this point is to buy each episode on iTunes for $1.99 or just wait a while, I have no doubt there will be a full second season set released at the same time they release the second half of season two on DVD.
It just seems like it is a cheap attempt by the studio to get more money out of consumers for something they might ultimately abandon not too far down the road.
For what it is worth, this DVD set is not that good. The special features are limited to a few deleted scenes and some podcasts that can already be heard online.
The show itself has gotten weaker and is already beginning to feel drawn out and the lack of Cylon engagements is disturbing. Considering the Cylons can take on human form the scare factor is gone and the limited amount of time the actual robot Cylons are on screen makes me think the CGI budget for this movie has taken a serious hit.
Overall I would steer clear of this DVD set at all costs. You aren't getting a full season, limited special features and a full season release has almost certainly got to follow once the second half is done.
