I wish I could say I remember when I used to watch "Battlestar Galactica" as a kid, but, while I did watch it, I don't remember it. Keeping that in mind, I couldn't imagine how a new TV series based on the old premise could be any good, but sci-fi shows seem to be on the rise as of late and considering CGI animation is getting better by the minute these shows can be made for the same amount of money as before with much better space battles incorporated.

The premise of this one centers around the idea that humans created a robot species called the Cylons. Unfortunately, that little trick didn't work out, and after a long war the Cylons left Earth only to return 40 years later with nothing but annihilation in mind. The main difference this time is that they have taken on human form making them unrecognizable.

The cast of "Battlestar" is filled with unknowns aside from the talent of Edward James Olmos who you would not particularly expect to be in this kind of show, but he plays the part of Commander Adama exceptionally well and his presence certainly gives the show some much needed legitimacy.

What this DVD set contains is the original three hour miniseries along with all 13 episodes from season one. The special features aren't exactly limited, I just found no interest in them. What you get is an audio commentary on the mini-series and nine more on the first season episodes. The fifth disc in the set holds the rest of the features including a feature including the sketches and art from the show, deleted scenes and eight behind-the-scenes featurettes looking at the transition the show took from mini-series to series and various other looks at the making-of the show.

As I said in my opening, I think the true appeal drawing viewers to sci-fi shows is that the creators are able to do the CG work for cheaper and cheaper, and easier and easier, making each incarnation more and more desirable and "Battlestar Galactica" is no different, but this is not something I would recommend you run out and buy.

Besides Olmos, the acting in this show is rather weak and if it wasn't for a strong storyline this show would surely suffer. While I am eager to see the second season it will need some serious adrenaline injections to keep me interested. Until then I can be considered a skeptical fan. My recommendation to you is to put this in your NetFlix Queue for approval. After watching the mini-series you should have some kind of an idea if this one is for you or not.
