"Alias: The Complete Fifth Season" - DVD Review

Alias: The Complete Fifth Season is a Buena Vista Home Entertainment release and is rated .
Yet another once widely popular television series comes to a close as "Alias" season five hits the shelves and agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) heads into retirement. This fifth and final season does a pretty good job of wrapping up quite the convoluted series, which is satisfying considering how this show never seemed to have a handle on itself, yet it remained highly entertaining.

The early seasons of "Alias" had a primary goal of finding Rambaldi artifacts, but soon dug deeper into a variety of storylines as new characters were added and agency lines began to blur. Luckily, storylines always came back to the bread and butter and the fifth season is no different. If there was any complaints it would obviously have to do with a pregnant Jennifer Garner, sorry Jen that Affleck baby just didn't work, but we will forgive you as it all seemed to work out just fine.

Consisting of only 17 episodes this season comes up about seven episodes short of a full season, but that is no problem as nothing more was needed. Just about everyone from earlier season is back and the ending is wrapped nice and neat, or as neat as an "Alias" series could be wrapped as the Mission: Impossible-esque series could easily never have ended.

As for the special features you get four discs, the first three consisting of episodes 1-15 and the final disc containing episodes 16 and 17 and the rest of the bonus features. Speaking of those features, how about a quick peek:

Celebrating 100 - "Alias" celebrated its 100th episode this season and this is a small recap of the festivities involved. Short and to the point.

The Legend of Rambaldi - This one starts out with a mockumentary style approach on the fictional inventor/architect/engineer/artist and then goes into all the props created for the film based on Rambaldi. This is the one feature that could have been longer and really needs its own DVD. Oh wait, it has one.

Heightening the Drama: The Music of "Alias" - This is also a cool feature, because no one ever really discusses the music of these television series, and considering the necessity for music in this series, and the wide range of music at that. Involving a mix of techno and orchestra in the early stages and almost orchestra only later on it is a cool look at the behind-the-scenes efforts of Michael Giacchino.

The New Recruit: On Set With Rachel Nichols - A by-the-book at a look on set with series newcomer Rachel Nichols who plays Rachel Gibson on the fifth season.

The Bloopers of "Alias" - Uh, pretty self explanatory and if you have a few minutes to spare check it out, if not, skipping it won't kill you.

Overall this is a must own if you have the other four season. As a starting point for series newcomers I wouldn't recommend it. "Alias" is a series made for DVD, there are too many cliffhangers for your occasional viewer and I just can't be this committed to a show to make sure I tune in weekly. If you haven't caught on to "Alias" yet start with season one, and if you want to save some cash Netflix it, you might become hooked like I did and end up buying the whole series.
