The running time is 7 hrs. 37 mins..
"30 Rock" centers around a "SNL"-like live sketch show called "The Girlie Show" in which Fey plays lead writer Liz Lemon. When the show begins Jane Krakowski's character Jenna is the lead of the show, but when Alec Baldwin comes in as new studio head Jack Donaghy things change instantly. First order of business is a radical reinvention in an effort to tap the 18-40 male demographic, which means a new lead. You guessed it, Tracy Morgan shows up as Tracy Jordan, an unstable B-level movie star and the show rolls on from there. Renamed to "TGS with Tracy Jordan" this wild sitcom takes on a life of its own.
The charm of the show is Fey's straight-forward, no-nonsense style, Baldwin's ability to make you laugh at just about anything, McBrayer's absolute charm with that goofy ass smile he carries around and Morgan's ability to just be Tracy Morgan. If you have ever seen Tracy play the part of Brian Fellows on "Saturday Night Live" you know this guy can make you laugh, and with this show he takes up one more notch.
Whether he is describing his sexual escapades with his wife as they "play rape," hosting the "Star Jones Gastric Bypass Cooking Show" or referring to Liz Lemon as "Liz Lemon" (trust me it's funny) it is going to make you laugh, here is an example and here is another one which also includes Jack McBrayer as Kenneth.
This three-disc set also includes some so-so audio commentaries that never really entertain that much, some behind-the-scenes looks, deleted scenes and a few shorts, three of which are hosted by Kenneth as he does his own version of a late night talk show while interviewing the folks that work on "The Girlie Show". Most of the features are pretty much a waste, but the "Wrap Party/Bloopers" are definitely worth a look, I have to assume these guys have a blast making this show.
Features aside, you aren't buying this set for the features, you are buying it because along with "Scrubs" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "30 Rock" is the only other sitcom on television worth watching, and instead of watching it on TV, why not just pick it up on DVD and watch it without all the commercials. Trust me, this is a sitcom worth owning, the comedy is some of the best I have seen.
