"24 - The Complete Fifth Season" - DVD Review
Skip Down to Special FeaturesREVIEWED BY Brad Brevet
Well, I waited a long time but I finally get to dive into the fifth season of "24," a season I started way back in January as I watched the first four hours over two nights. I have done this for two years now and while it sucks to wait it is always well worth it. However, the fifth season has its bumps along the way as this show relies on lies, deception and back-stabbing a little too much. On top of that I have a profound hatred for President Charles Logan played by Gregory Itzin, which I guess is something to be said for Itzin's acting, but I have never felt like the presidential chair was very well represented on this show.

Luckily that is only a part of the story, or is it? The fifth season has more twists and turns than the past two that is for sure. You never know who is on what side of the playing field and you have to wait until the final episode to see if those who deserve it get their come-uppins.

This fifth season begins as Jack Bauer has gone into hiding after faking his death at the end of the fourth season. However, someone has found out he is still alive and takes advantage of this knowledge and begins a terrorist plot that will rival anything ever conceived involving individuals on every level of the governmental payroll and is up to Bauer and the Counter Terrorist Unit to get to the bottom of it all and stop the baddies.

Packed with an obvious 24 episodes this season set also brings a ton of features for the fans.

Deleted and Extended Scenes - These are offered along with the episodes using a small "24" icon to access them while watching or you can watch them on disc 7 where they are offered along with optional commentary with writer Stephen Kronish and editor Scott Powell. Some of these are interesting and I think it would have been cool if they had just put the ones they regretted losing back into the episodes for the DVD, but instead you get this option, which doesn't hurt either.

Commentaries - There are a whopping 12 commentaries for season five for 11 of the episodes with two on the first hour. While Kiefer Sutherland only steps in for the first hour director John Kassar and several of the supporting cast join for the other 11 commentaries which are all quite unique considering that fact. While some of them aren't necessarily great there are times when accompanied with the deleted and extended scenes feature they can actually become more interesting.

Season 6 Prequel - A look at the events leading up to what will debut in March. It really doesn't add a whole lot more than what you get from the final episode, but it gives you some idea on why things happened.

Season 6 Trailer - Doesn't show anything new at all. Not interesting.

Supporting Cast (20:26) - Who is going to be cast and when are they going to die? That really seems to be the question with "24" and several of the cast members from season five, alive or dead, spoke about the topic as well as just how they came to the show and their thoughts on their characters and the production. Gregory Itzin who plays President Charles Logan talks about his acting school in Hollywood and that might be one hell of a school since he seems like a likeable kind of guy, but I hated the hell out of his character. Bravo Greg! Even Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays Chloe, talks about her early start as a stand-up comedienne if you can believe that!

Unsung Heroes: 24 Camera Department (40:00) - Pretty straight forward, this is about the camera operators, seven of them to be exact along with director of photography Rodney Charters. The feature also shows you how they set up their shots and a little bit of what different camera operators are capturing during a single scene. However, at 40 minutes it runs a bit long.

Music by Sean Calley (9:48) - I just commented in my review of the fifth season of "Alias" how they normally don't talk about the scoring of a television series, but "24" shuts me up really quick with a 10 minute feature on Sean Calley and the work he puts in as the score composer for the show. The difference here seems to be that on "Alias" they had a full orchestra while here Calley seems to be doing everything. A great portion of this feature though is when he sits down and shows the effect music has on a scene by scoring a single scene three different ways and while the effectiveness is no surprise it is quite eye-opening and will probably give you a better appreciation for the music you hear in TV shows and in movies.

Logan's Retreat (5:51) - A quick look at the designing and work behind creating President Logan's retreat where he stays for the duration of season five. I didn't really connect with the location or think it was all that interesting, but this features are always pretty cool especially when they are quick.

100th Episode Reel (7:14) - I never saw the first two season of "24," but this little reel gave me a look at a lot of what I have missed all leading up to the 100th episode which occurs shortly into the fifth season. A look at the good, the bad and the ugly viewers have experienced over the past five years. It is a great show and should be a fun reminder for fans.

"24: Behind the Scenes": Book Sample - What you have here are just some still images from the already published behind the scenes book. A commercial you may say.

Overall, this show is always entertaining even if it becomes a bit convoluted and implausible. It's TV, what do you expect? On that note, this is a show I think is only watchable on DVD considering the overwhelming number of cliffhangers. Each episode does have a mini-recap of what has happened up to that point, but if I ever missed an episode while trying to catch it on television I would be very upset. The price may be a bit steep, but "24" plays like a one movie, so if you are buying this one you are certainly getting your money's worth.
