Disney Buys Marvel for $4 Billion and the Internet Erupts

The money's big, but don't expect the changes to be

So I wake up and see a bunch of emails in my Inbox with "breaking news" slathered all over them followed by an official press release telling me Disney has acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. I begin to think, "Wow, that's a lot of money, but not as much as the $7.4 billion it cost to buy Pixar three years ago…" Then, my thinking on the subject ends because, really, who cares? Companies buy companies all the time and while people will say Mickey Mouse now owns Spider-Man, all I can think about is the fact Spider-Man will most likely be distributed by Touchstone, a Disney label that distributes their more edgy products.

The only real news here is the fact a lot of big numbers changed hands and a new company will be shelling out movies featuring men in spandex.

The current deal in place with Paramount to distribute Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers remains intact. That deal, which was made back in September of 2008 saying Paramount would distribute Marvel's next five self-produced feature films on a worldwide basis. With the four films already listed, it leaves one more, which would most likely be Iron Man 3 in my estimation.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney's global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel's properties.

In more interesting news, Newsarama listened in on the investor conference and quoted a response when someone asked about the possibility of a Marvel/Pixar team-up. "We actually have had some conversations internally, and [Pixar's] John Lasseter met with some of the key Marvel creative executives fairly recently and the group got very excited pretty fast," Disney's President and CEO, Bob Iger said. "We had to say, 'slow down guys, we haven't done this deal yet.'" Still, Iger said, "You can put a lot of creative, enthusiastic people in a room that can appreciate the value of great characters and interesting worlds, a lot can happen… sparks can fly, is the expression that comes to mind."

So, while I assume the majority of the more mainstream Marvel features will most likely find their way to Touchstone and seemingly remain no different than they were in the past, this does afford Marvel far more creative outlets than they had when they were operating on a solo basis. Of course, that seemed to be the way Marvel was heading and they were sitting pretty after the success of Iron Man and its $585 million worldwide take, but this move seems just as good as any.

I guess what I am most curious about is where do deals with characters such as the X-Men franchise lie? How about that Wolverine sequel or Magneto, both at Fox? Are the Fantastic Four still held by Fox? What about The Incredible Hulk and Universal? Sony seems to want to make Spider-Man movies forever with Spider-Man 4, Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 already in the works. Disney said in the investor call they would like to self-distribute down-the-line, but I guess the full meaning of that is yet to be known. There are a few loose-ends and I am sure enough licensing agreements out there to keep everyone busy for quite some time, but I really don't expect this to be a deal movie fansites should get too worked up over.

Maybe movie websites shouldn't get too worked up over it, but comic fans certainly will… and with decent reason. While I doubt Disney's reach will go down into the comics themselves, I'm sure they'll be looking to exploit more of the characters in other means. Disney wanted Marvel because their properties appeal to the young male demographic that Disney Princesses and Hannah Montanna don't reach. It's quite possible that they'll look to create new television shows and the like to broaden the awareness of the Marvel characters worldwide… and it *is* possible that they'll look for more movie possibilities within the 5000 characters Marvel owns.

If nothing else, following the success of G-Force, I'm looking forward to Rocket Raccoon blasting off soon. Plus… Howard the Duck can now go back to looking like Donald without getting Marvel sued…

I guess this was bound to happen. Thinking about it even more, It’s folly to think that an independent studio can go at it on it’s own in today’s landscape without hitching it's wagon to one of the big boys.

I’m good with this. Disney has stayed “hands-off” in their relationship with Pixar specifically in the creative process, and I’m fairly confident the same freedom will be extended to Marvel. Marvel benefits from this because their reach will expand even more when they are heavily marketed and promoted across Disney’s media arms. I don't think they will go "G" rated on Marvel's top tier characters such as Wolverine, X-Men, Spiderman, and the like. Walt Disney Pictures has started releasing some edgy PG13 fare recently such as the PotC trilogy, or the films can be released under the Touchstone banner.

People got worried as well when Pixar officially came under the Disney Umbrella (myself included) and it was all for naught. Pixar remained free to do things their way creatively. Sure, they are throwing in a sequel to both Toy Story and Cars but they are doing it on their own timetable until they get a story and concept that they feel worthy, and not being rushed to have it ready for release in a year or two after it's predecessor.

CNBC reported that's a sure sign of the economic recovery is in full effect, for any company to shell out billions. So think positive!

What I want to know is how does this affect Islands of Adventure, the almost 100% Marvel-based Universal Studios theme park in Orlando.

Im sure Disney will not allow Universal Studios, their #1 theme park competitor, to be using their characters in competition. I'm sure at one point Islands of Adventure will have to change the names and look of their park once contracts go under review.

  5. I just want Disney to leave my comics alone. Forget the films.

I doubt this deal will change anything.
If Marvel is making money (I bet they are, with all the movies that are coming out), why would Disney risk anything? I doubt Disney will change how things are working right now…

Certainly in the future they will try to control all of Marvel properties that are now with other movie companies. Probably the same way Warner controls DC movies.

Not a big deal for me…

I think Leandro Dubost is right on the money. Litteraly.
You don't buy a proffitable company and then change it.

The currently running contracts with other companies will not be changed.
When they run out Disney will look at whats better, extending the contracts or doing things inhouse.

Taking part of the earnings and letting someone else do all the work might be more cost effective than taking all the money but having all the production costs as well.

@Roger: Its going to be replaced with a Harry Potter themed park, and Disney has been talking with Marvel for a while to make a Disney/Marvel Park called "Villans" It's set to begin construction in the next 5-10 years. This isn't surprising news considering negotiations have been in talks about this park for over a year.

Remember that Warner owns DC, this is another form of envy.

I hope the movies are the same

Hey maybe it'll mean sequels to "the incredibles"? At the very least an "incredibles" comic series…
