Director Pulls Out Before Pompeii Blows

No 'Pompeii' for Polanski

The sexual inuendo in that headline was indeed fun to come up with as ScreenDaily is reporting that Roman Polanski has left the forthcoming production of the epic drama Pompeii due to scheduling conflicts due to the uncertainty in Hollywood surrounding the upcoming strikes.

Polanski's schedule apparently does not allow him to accommodate an uncertain start date beyond 2008 as he was quoted saying, "I put a lot of work and energy into the development of Pompeii, so it is not without regret that I have to decline my further involvement."

I am not sure what Polanksi has going on considering nothing has been reported and since Summit International is now going to "back the film to a time that will accommodate the production needs" according to CEO Patrick Wachsberger I don't see why a suitable date couldn't be decided on. This smells as if it was one of those "difference of opinions" kind of drop outs that Hollywood likes to cover up in an effort to avoid bad blood, especially when Polanski had already put in nine months on the production.

The film is based on Robert Harris' novel, Pompeii centres on a young engineer caught up in political intrigue as Mount Vesuvius is about to erupt.

I can't just see them turning to Roland Emmerich now to turn this into another Day After Tomorrow as opposed to the more dramatic piece the fleeing, never entirely convicted of statutory rape Polanski would have given us. How's France Roman?
