DiCaprio Preps to Take a 'Long, Long Break' from Acting

I am a bit drained.

Leonardo DiCaprio in Django UnchainedLeonardo DiCaprio starred in Django Unchained this year and will be seen in The Great Gatsby and Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street next year (both of which, by the way, made my Top 50 Most Anticipated Movies of 2013 list), but after that we might not see him for a little while.

Speaking with the German daily Bild (via) DiCaprio said:

"I am a bit drained. I'm now going to take a long, long break. I've done three films in two years and I'm just worn out. I would like to improve the world a bit. I will fly around the world doing good for the environment."

A trip to IMDb shows 23 films in development for DiCaprio, which I'm assuming will slowly begin to diminish.

The only one I'm a little disappointed may find the backburner is Satori based on Don Winslow's novel, which itself was a sequel to Trevanian's "Shibumi", which I highly recommend if any of you need something to read. I have yet to read Winslow's "Satori" and am a little hesitant since he didn't write the original, but I do have it on my iPad so I'm sure one day I'll get to it.

I'll miss him while he's out of the game, so to speak, but as much as celebrities tend to take flak for trying to be philanthropists and do-gooders, I think it's very sweet of him to take on a different role outside of acting.

  2. Kessler says:

Wow. If he's actually serious then I'm a bit sad. I think he's one of the better actors working today and I've always been excited whenever he took on a new project.

    • Danny says:

I picked up on it too... And where there is a bit if irony in the statement... There is no other way to get around the world quicker than by jet... So until there is, it's stupid too look at the comment that way...

  3. Mandarin says:

How do you think people travel to the UN climate talks, Ben? They fly. It would be cute if they walked, but also kind of silly.

Anyway, a sad little part of me hopes that DiCaprio goes away for five years. Maybe that would make the effing award voters stop taking him for granted. But the main me certainly hopes, and thinks, that he´ll be back in a year or so. I don´t think he can keep away from acting.

    • Ben says:

Oh, UN involvement? I just presumed he'd be going around his neighbourhood picking up litter. He's being a bit more ambitious than i thought he would be.

Fair play Leo, never give up lad.

  4. Max says:

I can't believe so much is being made about Leo's remark

    Infact , I bet Leo can't either.

After finishing three films almost back to back, why would anyone be surprised to hear him state that he wasn't going to go straight into another film ?

Why would anyone be surprised to hear him claim he welcomes some down time ?

Before the year is out, I predict we'll be hearing news of Leo's next project, and all will be realizing that all the attention given by the media to these interview comments was much ado about nothing .

  5. Beautifulm says:

Takinf 2 or 3 years off may seem like a long time, but it's really not. I mean he has 2 films out this year and he'll be back in 2015 or 16 I predict.

  6. Jaylav3205 says:

Leo IMO is the best actor of our generation. He is very consistently in good to great movies. I hope he just means. He won't do anything this year and come back next year and continue to give us good movies. I think he has only been in one movie that I would consider bad and that is pretty damn impressive to me. He is fairly young so this is actually a pretty good time for him to take a break. I think out of all the actors nowadays he is probably the one person that I would miss the most if he actually does take a lot of time off. jmo

  7. Danny says:

He'll be around for the next year doing press all over for both Gatsby and Wolf of Wall Street.... So his hiatus will probably be most of 2014 and 2015... I bet the next DiCaprio flick will be in late 2016...

  8. Reindeer says:

A long long break... when we hard workers say that don't we just mean a couple of months? Or even weeks. You could do a lot of flying in weeks! It'll be fine. December 2014 wilk have a DiCaprio- film. As will December 2015, 2016, etc.

  9. Grandpa says:

all those oscar raiders. meeting christoph waltz may opened his eyes to the meaning of all of it. patience. tarantino knows. life is not endless. enjoy it as much as you can.

  10. carrie says:

he's above all an activist for the protection of Victoria Secret models(i stole this quote on another blog) in my opinion and he needs to be logic because to FLY (especially in private jet) all around the world doing good for the environment is not "green"

  11. Yaz says:

I generally think Leo is a bit overrated as an actor. I actually think it's great he's taking a break - good to see celebs concerned about more than just making money. Do something good for the world Leo! Hollywood will be waiting I'm sure.

  12. Chris says:

This is sad but the guy could use a break. He's had one or two movies out a year for the past 3 years or so. He deserves a break. I believe he's the best actor of his generation and can't wait till he returns.

  13. G-Man says:

    "I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it."

Damn - this news sucks. Leo is probably in my top five actors right now. He has continued to impress me.

  14. kash says:

I think his heart is breaking from all the losses and snubs from the globes and oscars, despite all the brilliant work he has been putting out since the beginning of time. i feel for you bro!

  15. Andrew says:

If I got screwed out of Oscars by an aging Academy as much as this guy I'd want to take a break from acting too lol guy was phenomenal in Django.
