'King's Speech' Leads the Full List of 2011 Golden Globe Nominees with Seven
'Social Network' and 'The Fighter' are right behind with six each
This morning the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) had me up and out of bed at 5 AM for the announcement of the nominees for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be held just over a month from now on Sunday, January 16, 2011. Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood joined Hollywood Foreign Press Association Philip Berk to announce the nominations in 25 categories in film and television.
Leading the list of film nominees is The King's Speech with seven in total followed by both The Fighter and The Social Network with six. After that, Inception, The Kids are All Right and Black Swan all have four.
As far as surprises go, I'd say the Comedy/Musical categories look like a disaster as The Tourist isn't only nominated for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), but both Jolie and Depp were nominated for Best Actor and Actress for their roles in the travesty of a film… an acting travesty for certain. Depp was also nominated for his role in Alice in Wonderland and the film itself also enjoyed a Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) nom and Best Score for Danny Elfman.
Perhaps 127 Hours missing out on a Best Picture (Drama) nom is a surprise as director Danny Boyle also didn't receive a Best Director nomination, overlooked for David O. Russell (The Fighter) instead. Though Boyle and co-writer Simon Beaufoy did find their screenplay nominated.
Beyond that, I'd say the Globes are rather safe from too much ridicule since they do break things up into two different categories so there's little room left for a snub. However, I was interested to see Alexandre Desplat nominated for his King's Speech score instead of The Ghost Writer. I was beginning to think Roman Polanski's feature may be able to start breaking through after some recent love, but perhaps that was me jumping the gun.
Always remember I am keeping track of everything award related under the sun in "The Contenders"! Enjoy the noms…

Love Johnny Depp but what the bloody hell are the globes thinking with all the nominations for The Tourist?
That was certainly the surprise for me of the morning for me. It is a big Hollywood movie with two really huge stars. The GG's love big stars.
I am surprised that Toy Story 3 didn't make it into the best Picture Comedy/Musical category. Especially with it being such a slow year for that genre. To me that makes it's chances of a Best Picture Win slim to none. HOORAY for Emma Stone though.
And what about Alice being nominated for Best Comedy and Actor? It was one of Depp's worst performances. The movie itself is quite meh.
The whole Best Comedy category (Red and Kids Are All Right aside) looks silly.
Cheer for Nicole Kidman..
But,where is Leslie Manville?
No True Grit?…the hell?
I don't belive it was screened for them, or it mereley didn't play well. Remember last year, Hurt Locker got shut out and that turned out okay.
Well, I guess the HFPA never has been friendly to the Coen Bros. now that I think of it. But judging by the reviews so far, it would be hard for the HFPA not to be impressed, or for it to not play well.
I guess the good news is that the Academy just adores the Coens, so we'll see.
What if…Alice in Wonderland is this years Blindside?
In the case of Golden Globes, more likely to be this year's Sherlock Holmes/The Hangover.
NO 127 HOURS FOR BEST PICTURE?!?!?!?!
The Golden Globes are a joke. That is all.
What the hell is the Musical/Comedy nominations?
I mean, is that a joke?
Didn't most critics said that performances by both Jolie and Depp were flat and boring?
And do I even have to talk about Alice in Wonderland?
Not only it isn't a comedy, it isn't a musical as well and IT MEDIOCRE!
This is Mamma Mia! all over again.
The Golden Globes should drop the Musical/Comedy categories. They usually are a joke.
The main difference is that Mamma Mia was a genre that Golden Globe voters alledgedly like.
It seems that Alice is the token mainstream film nominee.
In 2008 it was Mamma Mia which got nominated for Best Picture (C/M), In 2009 it was The Hangover which ended up winning Best Picture (C/M). Since none of 2010's comedies overtook The Hangover's box office, where else could voters rely on?
Let's not forget Sherlock Holmes won a Globe in a C/M category too.
wow, its hard to take these awards seriously. the tourist? did the voters even see that movie? there is no way it deserves 3 nominations. and there is no way depp deserves to be nominated for alice in wonderland either. helena bonham carter's performance was the only one anywhere near award worthy.
and for the comedy category: scott pilgrim v. the world, toy story 3, cyrus, city island, the other guys, get him to the greek, morning glory, youth in revolt, hot tub time machine, love and other drugs, and even jackass 3D deserve nominations before 3 of the films on that list.
As for my reaction… these are simply idiotic!
I still don't understand 127 hours not getting nominated, the fact that Russell took Boyle's spot and Fighter took the movies spot shows that voters liked it more because i think the other 4 in the group of 5 are always going to be there
First, nothing against Johnny Depp; he is a fantastic, very versatile actor, and there aren't a lot of them out there. But, really? two noms in the same category?
Second, Leo gave another outstanding performance(two years in a row in my opinion) and he gets ignored?
In my opinion if they want to nominate a comedy because of star power…two words…The Grown-ups.
Same here.
I love Johnny Depp.
Who doesn't?
He is a terrific actor.
But his two nominations here are pathetic! I suppose that even he is laughing at this idiotic situation.
Apologies, I had the nominees for Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and Actress (Drama) reversed. The error has been fixed.
lol let me get this straight, all 3 Tourist nominations are in Musical or Comedy, i havn't seen the movie but I thought it was supose to be a thriller, Brad?
It's intended to be a mixture of both, but in my review I simplified that a bit saying, "The Tourist is a nothing movie."
It's clearly an effort just to get Jolie to the show. Depp they made doubly sure.
Well WTF is The Tourist up there for for? I didn't know it was a Comedy or a Musical.
Anyways, cool for The King's Speech. I like seeing Nolan finally getting some recognition.
These are a joke. No 127 Hours, only 1 nomination for Toy Story 3, and Angelina Jolie for The Tourist? I'd rather have Taylor Swift's performance in Valentine's Day nominated over her.
The Comedy genre-RUBBISH, here's what it should have looked like:
Kick-Ass
The Kids are Alright
Morning Glory
The Other Guys
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Maybe these won't appeal to much people, but certainly looks better than the ones right now
If Pilgrim isn't a visual effects nom for the Oscars, something fishy is going on
Very nice, Grissom. I can totally agree with this list.
I agree with you almost 100 percent. When I read the list of noms I thought to myself, "wow there were some shitty comedies this year!" Really the Golden Globes just plain missed on this category. I would just replace Morning Glory with Cyrus on your list, but other than that I think you got it right.
Knock off Morning Glory for Easy A and that list is gold.
Almost forgot about Easy A. Yea, It should be like this:
Easy A (wild card:Cyrus, Morning Glory)
Kick-Ass
The Kids are Alright
The Other Guys
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
How the GG's got these confused with the likes of Alice in Wonderland, The Tourist and Red (although i liked), i don not know
@Grissom: Yeah, well that's the Golden Globes for you.
And even though Morning Glory received generally mixed reviews, it has to be better than some of the actual nominees.
"Alice" and "RED" are better than the Kids are Alright, Morning Glory and the Other Guys. Anyway, I think that the nominations shoud be
Kick-Ass
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Toy Story 3
Alice in Wonderland
RED
127 Hours was awful, I'm more sad that HP7 was ignored.
???? How can you think that?! Alice was horrid and Red was good, but not Globe worthy. Grissom's picks are SO much better than your's
I am not surprised by all the Burlesque noms. Last year they gave Nine a ton of noms, and that sucked too.
No love for Ben Stiller in Greenburg or DiCaprio in Shutter Island?
or Inception
I thought DiCaprio's performance in Shutter Island was brilliant. I guess the HFPA doesn't agree.
Either Social Network of The King's Speech will win for Best Pic.
Don't count The Fighter or Inception out
or 127 Hours.
Most of the Dramatic nominations look reasonable (except Renner for The Town. I'm sorry, but I really didn't feel he did anything memorable or special) and I wonder if this might move Halle Berry up the Oscar nominations list?
I haven't seen The Tourist yet (but boy I'm I kinda regretting it now). 3 Nominations for maybe the most savaged big budget film of the year? That only opened on Friday? Something seems up there.
Since Hathaway is hosting maybe her nomination isn't a surprise.
The one thing that does is that Leo did not get nominated for either Shutter Island or Inception. I thought he might sneak in with a 'thanks for all the dough' nomination.
The Musical/Comedy side seems a bit weird. But, also great for Emma Stone.
Hathaway is hosting the Oscars, not the Globes.
The comedy/musical category sucks ass, aside from The Kids. Kick-Ass, Get Him to the Greek, The A-Team, Cyrus, The Other Guys, Easy A….
Aside from that travesty, the only huge surprise for me is the absence of 127 Hours. That film's star has fallen dramatically over the last few weeks, and while I'd still probably consider it a lock for a Best Pic nomination from the Oscars, Danny Boyle may be on his way out of the Director category.
Will said everything I wanted to say, well done sir.
I don't think the Golden Globes are bought necessarily but they will ALWAYS give a studio movie (The Tourist, Love and Other Drugs this year, Nine last year) preferential treatment to a smaller film.
At least Burlesque didn't get a….oh wait, nevermind.
Well, it's pretty obvious "The Kids Are All Right" will pick up a BP for the comedy category, as well as a Best Actress. It's far and away the best movie in the category. Though even if it hadn't been such a great movie it still wouldn't have been a hard distinction to achieve.
If it loses, it would be the biggest Golden Globe travesty ever.
I don't think it would be "the biggest Golden Globe travesty ever" as you might put it, I can think of at least 10 other travesties bigger than this.
1. A Beautiful Mind beating out The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
2. The Hours beating out The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
3. Mulin Rouge beating out Shrek
4. Babe beating out Toy Story
5. Chicago beating out My Big Fat Greek Wedding
6. Lost in Translation beating out Finding Nemo
7. Sideways beating out The Incredibles
8. Dreamgirls beating out Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benifit Glorious Nation of Kazackstan
9. Vicky Christina Barcelona beating out Mamma Mia
10. Ratatoullie beating out The Simpsons Movie
We all know that both The Globes and the HFPA are huge jokes so this shouldn't shake anyone up too much
Burlesque & The Tourist. Are you serious. But my 2 favorite shows were nominated for best drama. Boardwalk Empire & Dexter.:)
No love for Tron? Not even Musical Score? The Tourist, Burlesque, and Red for Best Picture? I could already see its ratings drop…
P.S., I hope How To Train wins.
Not by PIXAR, so Toy Story 3 obviously will win
You figure if they wanted ratings maybe throw in Toy Story 3. Personally I thought Alice in Wonderland was one of the worst movies in recent memory, what a joke!
Wan't terrible, but certainly not a Golden Globe kind of film or the best AIW adaption out there
On the TV side, I hope Al Pacino wins best actor for You Don't Know Jack. It was a fantastic movie, and his portrayal of Dr. Kevorkian was outstanding.
Most of the Nominees I see here are great, some are good, and some are a surprise I will have to deliberate on this one for awhile. It will take some time to see who I think will be the winners.
WHY ON EARTH IS BURLESQUE, RED, AND THE TOURIST NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE?
I dont even see a True Grit nod which will be one of the best movies of the year. Is it just me or are they Globes getting more and more sold out as the years go by.
I think the HFPA get paid off frankly
Imagine if Golden Globes did a breakout star category. Would anyone take that seriously? Here may have been the nominees.
Will Forte: MacGruber
Mia Wasikowska: Alice in Wonderland
Stone Cold Steve Austin: The Expendables
Tom Hardy: Inception
Will Poulter: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
I anticipate the GG's announcement that Just Go With It, Arthur, Bad Teacher, Zookeeper and Jack and Jill being the comedy frontrunners for this year.
