'Deadpool' Spins Away from 'Wolverine'
Ryan Reynolds is attached to star
Today's announcement out of The Hollywood Reporter, confirming what most already knew or at least assumed, tells us Fox is putting into development a spin-off feature based on the Deadpool character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The character was primarily played by Ryan Reynolds early in the film as Wade Wilson and then later on by Scott Adkins when the character was referred to as Weapon XI.
For now the film is titled Deadpool with Reynolds attached to star as the wise-cracking mercenary, which Borys Kit at THR reports was something of a deviation in Wolverine when the character was seen with his mouth sewn shut and he was imbued with several superpowers and called Weapon XI.
Of course, those that saw the Deadpool end-of-credits Easter egg saw the decapitated character's eyes open with his mouth no longer sewn shut as he gives the audience a hushed "Shhhhhh." Kit confirms the character won't be mute and will regain the ability to mouth off, with the movie going back to the roots of the character known for his slapstick tone and propensity to break the fourth wall.
Personally I thought Reynolds as Wade Wilson was one of the best parts of Wolverine and was drastically underused, which makes this project one I am interested in seeing. I like Reynolds and hope Fox manages to get a good script and director to turn this into something worthwhile and not just a crap spin-off like Elektra turned out to be.

fox is going to butcher this baby, just like they did with wolverine. expecting anything spectacular would be a big mistake, even though the deadpool character and ryan reynolds have real potential but they are at the mercy of fox.
Deadpool deserved more screentime in wolverine, not in the least because he's a very important part of the story.
So I'm looking forward to this. No it will not win any oscars but it might turn out to be very entertaining. To expect anything more seems a bit silly.
A good old popcorn flick with humor, action and some big FX.
And Reynold is perfect for the role. He's good at being quircky and sarcastic.
I think this could be a lot of fun.
Fox seems to suck at fully exploiting the sarcastic, wise-cracking characteristic of many Marvel characters for the big screen, the biggest example being Spidey. I have a tiny, miniscule hope it isn't the same case here.
very true. deadpool is one of the best parts in the x-men story but fox, like they always do, will decapitate him.
This almost sounds like the first time people are excited about Ryan Reynolds headlining a movie. And my favorite parts (or part) of Wolverine was when he was on screen.
Yeah, good move I say.
I'v been wanting a Deadpool movie for years, so this is pretty good news to me (altho I have little to no faith in Fox) im just hoping they dont completely butcher the movie.
After seeing what they did to Deadpool in "Origins" I have exactly zero faith in Fox to do this correctly. I'm sure they'll find an out for all the completely unnecessary changes they made to the character (I threw up in my mouth a little bit during the whole ordeal) but frankly they don't deserve to have the character after what they did in the first place.
I love Ryan Reynolds, he's one of the most charismatic and charming leading men in the business and like everybody else I agree that he is the only guy for this project (and his all too brief work in "Origins" was the lone high point) but I would have much rather seen a stand alone film to begin with so they could have really explored how great that character can be instead of shoehorning him into Wolverine's picture and now doing the spin-off.
Marvel has proved with "Iron Man" and "Hulk" that they can independently produce great films for their characters. They should do whatever they can to wrestle the rights away from Fox and start from scratch with Reynolds. It's the only way to salvage the character.
He should hold out for the Flash.
agree. marvel should take him away from fox.
i really hope they will keep his "breaking the fourth wall" trademark in the film.
I totally can't wait for a Deadpool movie myself. I'm one of the hugest fans of the character and have been waiting a long time for it. But the fact of the matter is that he did not turn out right at all in Wolverine's film. Sure, he was AWESOME when he was just Wade Wilson, but then they did the whole "combine all powers" thing and he turned into junk.
HOPEFULLY, they'll find some way to fix it in the next film. What's interesting to think about is that rumored ending for Wolverine. The one where his head looks at the screen and whispers "Shhhh…" IS there, but I've heard a lot about a false one where Reynolds comes by in a trench coat, picks it up, says "Who are you supposed to be?", and then throws it away. I would so LOL if that were in the intro of the Deadpool film and THEN have everything happen to Wade.
So you never know. It could be a clone. It could be a prototype. I personally think that some kind of researches search the area, find Weapon XI's body and head, send him to The Workshop for failed experiments, and then have Dr. Killebrew experiment on his body. The experimentation could remove his blades and the machinery in his body giving him the optic beam and teleportation abilities. As soon as he places his head back on though, he comes back to life and the story sort of follows the comics likewise from there. An excellent solution.
But Fox will do as they please. And I'm almost 100% CERTAIN that they've heard something by now and KNOW that that isn't how the Deadpool in the comics was. I bet they'll still keep that teleportation power at least though. At least we got to see a scene in Wolverine where the machinery for the optic beam was being placed in his eyes so that may help.
Well thanks for reading. If only Fox took ideas from the fans.
