David Slade's Name Added to Director Contention for Twilight's 'Eclipse'
And a short bit on the possibility of bringing 'Breaking Dawn' to theaters
UPDATE: David Slade has been confirmed as the director, click here for the news.
Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood has thrown another director's name into the ring when it comes to the much speculated role of helming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse which is already set for a June 30, 2010 release date, a mere seven months after this year's Twilight follow-up New Moon.
Finke reports David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days Of Night) now joins previous contenders Juan Antonio Bayona and Paul Weitz, brother of New Moon director Chris Weitz. Drew Barrymore was once said to be a possibility, but she recently told MTV, "Oh, I wish that I was! I adore that project and I adore the team that's making it. And I am very honored to now be a director and going up for other movies and being offered other movies as a director. I'm now an actor/producer/director! How lucky am I! [But] no, we're not going to do it together."
Finke says Slade met with author Stephenie Meyer and Summit president of production Erik Feig, but no other details beyond that saying there is no deal yet so as to clarify her jumping of the gun when she proclaimed Bayona had been confirmed as the director.
In other Twilight news, rumors began to spread saying Summit was deep in the planning stages for bringing "Breaking Dawn," the fourth book in the Twilight series, to the big screen, but Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg told Entertainment Weekly, "The most I've heard from Summit is 're-read it and start thinking about it… As far as I know, Stephenie was still having meetings asking, 'Can we really make this into a movie?'"
I have only read the first book in the series, but according to EW, the fourth book's racy sex and explicit birth scenes make it less pre-teen friendly then the three earlier, more chaste romance novels.

Yea.
I don't think content will be as much of a problem as the length.
They could easily work around the sex and birth scene and keep it at PG-13 like Twilight was.
But the 4th book is so much longer and has so much more plot line than all of the others, I'm not sure they could make it all into one movie…
I think it would be perfect if they split it into two movies, and had the split at the end of Jacob's part. I think that would give two different conflicts and resolutions AND give enough time to get into the details. In that book, the details are REALLY necessary. I mean, they'll have enough money…look at how much Twilight made. They'll also have money from New Moon and Eclipse. It would be waaaay better if they split it, for the fans and for Summit.
I love David Slade so I hope he stays away from this. The whole concept behind twilight just boggles my mind so even if they bring in Slade (or another sentimental favorite such as Bayona) I won't be seeing it.
David Slade's "Hard Candy" is abso-effing-lutely amazing! Anyone who hasn't seen it must do so now–he directs Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson to perfection.
"30 Days of Night" I wasn't so impressed with–the direction was good, but the story was weak.
I'd be very much interested to see how "Eclipse" turns out with him directing. Personally, Eclipse is my least favorite of the Twilight series. Not that I'm a big fan. Twilight's my junk food in between semesters of Milton and Bacon and Dickens. I don't set much store by Twilight like the fangirls do… in fact, Edward and Bella's love is really, really creepy! But it's great fun to read about. And the movie lived up to the novels: that is to say, it was absolutely trashtastic! I'm very interested to see how the next three films play out. :D
I think it would be horrible for them NOT to make the 4th book into a movie! It's absolutely doable!
Bella and Edward are married for heaven's sake in the 4th book…of COURSE there's going to be more racy sex scenes…if that means a higher rating…so be it.
Just because the book is long doesn't mean the movie would have to be spit into 2…a scene that may take 4 pages to read may actually only take up about 2 minutes of movie…and a lot of the detail will be visualized…taking another significant portion of the book…
Uh, there are no racy sex scenes in Breaking Dawn. The reader knows they've had sex, but we don't see it. And the birthing scene can always be toned down or shot in a way that is more PG-13. I think the problem of book 4 isn't sex or babies, but how to get the idea of the wolf-pack mentality, the unfilmable emotions that are in Bella's head, and the "special powers" showdown at the end of the novel.
Noo! you should do the 4th movie, but as the others say, you should make it 2 movies instead. It's very long and the fans would get much more exited!!
