'Dark Knight Rises' Adds Modine, Conti and King
The casting continues
Casting news surrounding Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises continues despite the fact Warner Bros. has already issued a press release announcing the start of production and following the first reveal of Tom Hardy as the film's villain, Bane.
The three latest actors to join the cast are Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket), Tom Conti (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence) and Joey King (Ramona and Beezus). Of course, as is tradition until Bat-fanatics figure it out, the roles each will play are being kept quiet, other than Modine's character of which all that's known is he will be named Nixon, a character name Variety puts in quotes which may imply the character wears a Richard Nixon mask.
ScreenRant's Sandy Schaefer already turned to Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" comic in which I now understand a convenience store robber wore a Richard Nixon mask, which may in fact be where the script drew inspiration.
The same Screenrant post speculates 11-year-old Joey King's role as potentially a slightly older version of Jim Gordan's (Gary Oldman) daughter Barbara or even a 13-year old Carrie Kelley, a.k.a. the first full-time female Robin, who was also featured in Miller's "Dark Knight Returns." I must say, it is nice to have these kinds of sites around to keep these things straight for me.
Otherwise, filming on The Dark Knight Rises is underway for a July 20, 2012.

One of the things I like about Nolan is that he often casts these great actors whose best periods are arguably behind them, like Rutger Hauer, Eric Roberts, Tom Berenger and now Matthew Modine. It's a small touch but I appreciate it.
"Arguably"?
Well, Hauer had a couple of good roles this year. But what I meant with 'arguably' is that I still think that they're great actors although they're not in many big movies anymore.
Nixon was a character who influenced Joker by making him more awesome. I'm confident that because nolan has cast modine as him that it will be the most perfect movie ever.
Sorry, just thought I would copy and paste what every other mildly retarded batfan would say.
King's probably just playing a young Selina or Miranda Tate.
I’m glad that Matthew Modine has joined the cast. I’ve been saying that the cast still feels incomplete and like it’s missing key characters. It feels complete now. If they add any other recognisable actors in this film, it will be a bonus.
Matthew Modine should have joined the A-list years ago and should have only been doing movies that went to the cinema. Unfortunately, he has remained a straight to DVD king but he is an underrated actor. So, I hope that he does more movies which get released properly at cinemas, tries to reach his full potential as an actor and tries to win an Oscar.
