Wes Craven is returning to his roots as Rogue Pictures is set to remake Craven's debut horror, 1972's The Last House on the Left with Craven on as producer with longtime partner Marianne Maddalena and Sean S. Cunningham.

The film will follow the same storyline as the original as it follows a pair of adventurous teen girls who are kidnapped, raped and murdered by a gang of thugs. The killers unwittingly hole up in the home of one victim's parents, who, upon realizing what their guests did, devise gruesome revenge.

"I'm far enough removed from these films that the remakes are a little like having grandchildren," Craven told Variety. "The story, about the painful side effects of revenge, is an evergreen. The headlines are full of people and nations taking revenge and getting caught up in endless cycles of violence."

An early 2007 start date is being eyed with Rogue maintaining worldwide distribution rights.

The latest Craven adaptation was The Hills Have Eyes which was released by Fox Searchlight and managed $41 million at the box-office and already has a sequel in development.
