Written by Cormac McCarthy (The Road), directed by Ridley Scott, The Counselor sees its first trailer premiere this morning giving you a first look at the film's stars, which include Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt due in theaters on October 25.

The story centers on a present-day Southwest lawyer (Fassbender) who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down. A bad decision. He tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation, but can he?

I recently posted some updated Oscar predictions and someone that saw an early cut of the film left the following note in the comments:

Saw early cut of "The Counselor" (Ridley's still working on it) and can only say that Diaz is absolutely fantastic. The closest to this performance of hers is "Vanilla Sky". But she's much more dangerous here, very sociopathic. Underneath all this sexiness there's something very dark and she absolutely nails it. I won't comment on the movie itself cause it's still in post-production but another performance you need to watch out from the movie is Bardem. He's awesome! He's so over the top but in a good way. Oh, and the work of Pitt is very sublime but I have a feeling he's gonna be overshadowed by Bardem ([Bardem's character] is bigger than life) during awards season. Shame because both guys deserve recognition. Oh, if Adams also delivers it's gonna be neck by neck race between her and Diaz. And I still have a feeling Julia won't go for a category fraud. It's a leading role and she's the name.

Hopefully they release a domestic trailer soon so I can actually understand what their saying.

Not sure what the point of posting a Russian teaser (didn't seem to be much of a trailer) for this movie was, Brad? On paper I like the director and the cast, though. Let us know when there's an English trailer to watch. Dasvidaniya!

    • http://kaisaccofilm.tumblr.com/ Kai Sacco

Well, because it's the first look anybody has gotten of the movie.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/andyluvsfilms/ andyluvsfilms

excellent cast and the plot sounds good too, as for Diaz's best performance, i would say Any Given Sunday tops anything else she's done so far

    • http://www.twitter.com/GregDinskisk GregDinskisk

Being John Malkovich would give that performance a run for its money, I'd say...

      • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/andyluvsfilms/ andyluvsfilms

not seen that one since it first came out, i dont remember much about it

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/JohnDoeSnow/ John Doe Snow

Watching this trailer it seems clear to me that it won't be an Oscar contender.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Fox/ Fox

I figured giving this a watch wouldn't be too spoiler-y because it's in Russian. I think it looks really good. It has the look and feel of No Country, and hopefully Scott is able to draw the same sort of magic from McCarthy's writing

Wow, Brad. I'm sorry you didn't read my warning right underneath the original comment you quoted. Wow.

    Cheers.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Hudsucker/ Hudsucker

Went back to your original comment, then looked at the post. I see no spoilers.

      • http://cinesnatch.blogspot.com Vince Smetana

Yeah, you don't get it. For those who know how to read, yes, the description is spoilery. Sorry if I can't put it to you in plainer terms.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Fox/ Fox

Here's an idea, if you don't want to find out anything about a movie, don't click on articles about said movie. I have a feeling that you may find the trailer too spoiler-y if the revelation that 'Cameron Diaz is sexy' is already too much info

          • http://www.twitter.com/GregDinskisk GregDinskisk

GOD DAMMIT FOX!!! WHY DID YOU SAY CAMERON DIAZ IS SEXY!?! THE MOVIE IS RUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://www.twitter.com/GregDinskisk GregDinskisk

I see nothing in the description that ruins anything for me, aside from maybe how performances will do at the Oscars... Does saying that someone is "Larger than life" ruin something for you?

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Paige/ Paige

I have to be honest, in both posts, you come off looking very immature. Nothing the poster has said was spoilery in the least bit. Did they give away plot details? No. Just descriptions of some of the actors' performances. If you can't handle a tiny bit of description, the internet is not for you. People everywhere are seeing early screenings for *something*.

      • http://cinesnatch.blogspot.com Vince Smetana

Spoilery elements don't just pertain to plot details, people. For obvious reasons, I can't describe how it's spoilery. But there are words used that tip its hat to a major plot development. Disappointed that Brad republished it. Oh well. Consider yourselves warned. I'm done here.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Jake17/ Jake17

Obviously he can't describe it because EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD THINKS IT'S A HUUUUGE SPOILER! We'll really miss you, Vince.

        • http://www.twitter.com/GregDinskisk GregDinskisk

Oh shit, guys!!! We've been warned! It's double serious in the G!

          • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Jake17/ Jake17

Watch it Greg! Can't you see he's disappointed in all of us, especially you Brad. DO YOUR JOB!

Oh, and remember, if we don't agree with Vince, then technically we CLEARLY don't know how to read (?!) which means we shouldn't be having this conversation at all.

        • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Hudsucker/ Hudsucker

          Thanks for the insult...

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/utahprime/ Mark Depew

why wouldn't Julia Roberts follow the 20 plus year trend of going supporting
to enhance her chance of actually winning the gong...

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Ryguy815/ Ryguy815

For some reason I have a feeling this will end up like Savages..a movie that everyone thinks will be good the ends up pretty much sucking.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Fox/ Fox

I was actually kind of scared of that when watching the trailer. But if you really think about it: better director, WAY better actors, and an amazing writer. I'm maintaining hope.

    • SohoDriver

It does that have potential, yes. But Ridley Scott is a better director than Oliver Stone (Prometheus was a blockbuster that I don't count as displaying his recent talents, films like American Gangster and Kingdom of Heaven prove he's still got it.) And Cormac McCarthy is one hell of a writer. Plus the fact Fassbender and Pitt both pick projects carefully, add in Bardem and Cruz, and even Diaz who can be good. I can't wait for this one.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/RonOnealFresh/ Ron Oneal Fresh

    I'm curious.

Hopefully the full length trailer gets my attention.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Paige/ Paige

Definitely just a teaser and nothing more. All I see are people looking at each other.

  • http://couchpotatodigest.blogspot.com Matt

Excellent teaser. I haven't liked a Ridley Scott film in a while, but when he's made some excellent films. At the very least, the film will have gorgeous cinematography. Love the shot of Diaz on the car.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Silrian/ Silrian

The last film Scott made that I kinda liked was Body of Lies.

Also, putting 'Academy Award NOMINEE' in front of Scott's name is more of a stain than a promotion when it comes to a directors this big imo.

I'm interested in this, mostly for (and screw the haters) Diaz. She can actually be a great actress in my opinion. I just hope this is gonna be less boring then Robin Hood.

    • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Silrian/ Silrian

Ugh, I used 'in my opinion' twice and not even consistently. *slaps himself*

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/Winchester/ Winchester

I do tend to either rather like or not like a Scott film - it's not usually an inbetween thing. The trailer doesn't give a lot away but intrigues me mostly because it is Ridley Scott in non 'epic' mode.

I'd like to see Diaz surprise people. She has talent in her, but the last time she expended energy on a group of films that could have broken her as a serious actress was around ten years ago or more with 'Any Given Sunday', Being John Malkovich', 'Vanilla Sky' and 'Gangs of New York'. She takes the cheap comedy route too often even though she's had legit box office hits doing so along the way. I think she has an Oscar winner level performance within her somewhere. Maybe this could be it.

  • http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/profile/MichaelM./ Michael M.

McCarthy is a phenom. writer so you know it'll astound in terms of screenwriting. Fassbender being his assured and cool-headed self, Bardem looks impressively maniacal, and Diaz seems posed for a nomination atleast. The cinematography is top-notch, while the ensemble cast shines. Could be a hit or miss though, under Scott's direction.

Diaz looks the real deal !! So does Bardem and Cruz.

Um, did anyone else notice the trailer spells the title, "Counsellor?" 2 LL's?

    • http://themoviegurusblog.blogspot.com The Movie Guru

      Yeah, I saw that too

    • http://www.cinemaconfessions.com/ Gautam Anand

LL is British English. The single L , American.
