BEST ACTRESS
I'm getting more nervous about my Julie Christie pick. That crowd reaction early on was a scary indicator. And Cotillard wins! Holy schnikeys, the Frenchie did it! God I can't help but be happy for her. How can you hate this? "Thank you life, thank you love! It is true that there are angels in this city." Cotillard is absolutely adorable in her speech and truly touched. This is genuine, classic Oscar moment stuff. You'll be seeing this speech on Oscar night highlights for the next ten years at least. I'm 7 for 13 and couldn't be happier about it.
Colin Farrell almost breaks his neck introducing "Falling Slowly" from Once. Of the nominees, this should win. I was worried the Academy would go soft and choose Enchanted but tonight's picks have been about quality, the right choices. No popularity contests tonight. Are we seeing a movement on the horizon?
FILM EDITING
I can't believe Bourne Ultimatum won this. Again, no knock on this movie. I love it and its deserving. But this stings a bit for me. Again, The Bourne Supremacy received ZERO nominations and it's essentially a better version of the same movie. I'm happy for the creative team behind these movies though so more power to them. 7 for 14. It's useless at this point, I'm a coulda-been.
Honorary Oscar Recipient Robert Boyle gets a nice montage … at age 98. He's helped on stage by two hotties. He's surprisingly spry in spirit though, despite nearing the century mark. He doesn't talk like a 98-year-old either. More like an 88-year-old, I'd say. He goes on way too long though. Thank goodness for TiVo!
Patrick Dempsey introduces "So Close" from Enchanted. Yawn.
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
The Counterfeiters wins. Nobody has seen any of these movies this year. Nobody is talking them. And I'm not about to start either. 8 for 15. I remember how it feels to win again!
