You have to wonder what these academy awards people are like peronsally.

And in terms of Heath Ledger, sadly the only reason he was nominated this year was because he played a cowboy in a movie that those academy award people loved a couple years ago.

I didn't think TDK was the best movie I saw last year but it was one of the top ones. Really, are these Academy award people those same people you see at Starbucks on their macbooks writing HiKu's?

Nominating the Reader (60% on rotten tomatoes, dudes. That's prettys shitty) was an excuse not to nominate Wall-e and TDK. Okay, I'm going to have to cool it now, otherwise my Academy hatred will rise up again.

Kate Winslet receives a nomination for a "leading" role? WTF!? How then is it fair that Heath Ledger only receives a nod for "supporting?" Also, how dare the Academy not even recognize Gran Torion, no acting, no directing, not even a token "Original Song" nom. - shame on you voters.

Further still, Revolutionary Road was robbed of nods for Best Picture & Best Director.

Now to the task at hand: NO DARK KNIGHT NOMS FOR DIRECTING OR PICTURE!!!!! Man, I thought for sure if it didn't get nominated for one it would get nominated for the other. Damn!

Good to see some love for Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins, Michael Shannon. Dissapointed not to see Dark Knight in the top category's. Overall this was a miss year by the academy imo.

Are these movies real?

I don't even think I've seen half of them in a theatre for more than a week let alone in a theatre at all.

Oh that's right, the oscars are for movies that a group of yuppy critics think need awards.

WALL-E, The Dark Knight. I know those movies. I guess I'd rather watch a movie that entertains me.

That's why I'd rather watch People's choice awards for movies PEOPLE(THE PUBLIC) vote for.

This is just a bad list all-around with some major pooch-screwing going on. The snubbings of Dark Knight, Eastwood, Springsteen, the Coen brothers and Woody Allen for screenplay, and the Acting brnach essentially snubbing Winslet for herself ... it's a strange list and I fear Oscar is inching toward irrelevance by doing things like this. The fact awards shows like the Globes and the Critics Choice Awards seem to be closing in on the amount of buzz they get compared to the Oscars the Academy really needs to do something. They need to overhaul the voting system because the acting branch has way too much power to dictate picture nominees with about 15% of the entire membership (and are we really supposed to believe there are only 8,000 people alive worthy of being voting members of the Academy?) The voting membership is becoming more and more of a nitch group than a group acknowledging overall excellence in movies.

Brad Pitt getting a nomination? That's a good call. Taraji P. Henson? Also a good call. Best Picture and Best Director? That's too much of a stretch. Especially when you are placing them above Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight. And this isn't even a fanboy talking. It's just boggling that a great movie, with several, not just one, but several great plot twists not get nominated for best picture. Not to mention a director, who found a way to do such a complicated movie with such precise actions scenes, with IMAX cameras, and as little CGI as possible.

@andrew: I haven't seen any of Mike Leigh's other movies, but I couldn't disagree with you more about Happy Go Lucky. It can be a slow movie, but you have to understand it's completely carried by sally hawkins performance as poppy. It was one of the most enthusiastic roles I've seen this year. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Poppy and Scott the driving instructor.

"Down to Earth" from Wall-E was a spectacular song that neatly tied up a fantastic movie during a unique epilogue/credit sequence. By no means is it stupid. The Springsteen snub was shocking, but the Peter Gabriel nomination was well deserved.

Commenting solely on Best Original Song because it's the one category that really shocked me... freakin' yes, O... Saya got nominated! It's the one song that managed to catch my attention, probably due to M.I.A.'s involvement. I'm surprised at Springsteen's snub, especially since I'd give the nomination to The Wrestler over Jai Ho, but eh...

i am sad that TDK has failed to make the cut.the British films have done well this year..well i still remember couple of years back when Elen De Genres said in the Oscar ceremony that "you dont know who is going to win unless you are British and then you know you have a pretty good shot!!"lolzz..atleast TDK should have been nominated for Best Picture and Nolan for Best Director...thank god Clint Eastwood was not nominated for Best Actor...Gran Torino was a great movie but it was more like a Bollywood flick of Amitabh Bachchan wrapped in Hollywood Plastic!!!But i am happy to see Slumdog Millionaire making it big in terms of nominations....people here in India are very happy to see it getting nominated for Oscar....it was almost 3 decades ago when Gandhi was nominated for Oscar....that was the last time a movie on Indian subject won all the top awards...
though i always felt Dustin Hoffman was more deserving winner for Tootsie than Ben Kingsley as Gandhi.....thanks to the editor of the portal-Brad Brevet for keeping all the nominations and letting us know abt the contenders....thankxx Brad....it's seems that A.R.Rahman will win the award for Original Score and best song...but how in the earth can Bruce Springsteen miss out a nomination for The Wrestler...i mean thats absurd....is it a tactics to give Slumdog another extra award???
In the supporting actor category Heath Ledger is surely going to win but can we have a tie this year coz Rob Downey jnr. was brilliant in Tropic Thunder....we must have a tie this year...it has happened in the past...why not this time...this is RDJ's comeback year with a solid performance in Iron Man and TT...hope it's a tie there....hey Brad what do you think...is there any chance of a tie???
In the Animated film category WALL-E will win for sure and i also expect it to win the Original Screenplay award....lastly i think Waltz with Bashir will win the award in Foreign Language category........

I'm a bit disappointed neither Colin Farrell nor Brendan Gleeson made it into the actor/supporting actor categories, i thought they both were brilliant in 'In Bruges'. Glad to see the screenplay nominated though... Other than that nothing really surprised me.

I agree, even though I'd rather see Slumdog win best original song, overlooking springsteen might be the biggest shock of the oscar nominees. that song was loved by everybody, or so i thought. instead we get some stupid song from wall-e.

"I guess Bolt just gets nominated because they need 3??? Why else would it be there?"

Apparently the Academy voters with their short-term memories forgot all about a flick called 'Horton Hears a Who' released early in the year.

I agree with most of these, but how in the holy hell is Springsteen not nominated? Why are there only 3 nominations for original song? Last year ENCHANTED had 3 nominations on it's own. This makes no sense to me. Glad to see Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins and Josh Brolin nominated. Can't see any of them winning though, they all seem to be overshadowed and Jenkins has the unfortunate luck of his movie being release a lot earlier in the year.

You cannot believe how happy i am that Kate Winslet got the nomination for The Reader and NOT revolutionary road.. i was campaigning for it and no one would agree with me.. the oscar voters knew it was the better performance and the better film hence also being pleased with its best film nom.. The Reader is a beautiful, moving and thought provoking film that deserves those nominations.
VERY pleased that Doubt got its 4 acting nominations, Meryl, Philip, Amy and Viola deserve them. And MERYL OSCAR no3 PLEASE!
expected the academy to like Angelina.. they do like the insane house films.. Melissa Leo tho.. no.
Did love Ben Button even tho so many don't but so too love slumdog... so they should fight it out :D but SM should NOT be aloud a clean sweep

Although Kate Winslet's performance was great, her nomination for the Reader over Rev. Road just further convencies me that she won't win this year. I would love to see her win, but the Academy will see past her desperate campagin and probably award it to Hathaway(also deserving). So now its a three way battle-Hathaway, Streep and Winslet. In my opinion, Hathaway should win, her acting was superb in RGM, but I understand that the Academy might give it to Winslet as a lifetime achievement thing, but if she does win, I won't be mad becuase it is well deserved.

Where the hell is TDK??????

It was just as good as Slumdog Millioaire. And how come In Bruges didnt get any more respect and i hope it wins original screenplay. The Reader looks good, but not best picture worthy. AR Rahman is a true inspiration to all Indians. I hope he wins and Slumdog Millionaire wins best picture.

If you are pissing and moaning about TDK not getting a nomination, I agree. The Dark Knight was a better movie than Benjamin Button, so was Revolutionary Road. Nolan deserves more credit than Fincher this year. Guess I should've seen it coming. But why the hell did they not Nominate "The Wrestler" by Bruce Springsteen for best song? That was honestly the most astonishing snub this year, the fact that only THREE songs were chosen and that the shitty peter gabriel song was nominated over The Wrestler. Who the fuck are these people. AND BRAD PITT OVER LEO!?!?!?!?!?!!?!? Don't people recognize talent when they see it?

Not seen Slumdog, but love M.I.A., so I heard "O Saya" and my god what a good song. I might have to find more music from A.R. Rahman.

Add me to the number of people bewildered about Button's popularity. I like David Fincher's work but this is not even close to his best. I hope Slumdog bites Ben Button's wrinkled ass off otherwise it would be Crash/Brokeback all over again. And Frost/Nixon AND The Reader over TDK for BP? Snobbish Academy! Why couldn't stupid Brangelina get snubbed instead? And I'm REALLY shocked that Gran Torino got nothing.

Oh well, atleast there are lots of bright spots about these noms. Downey Jr.'s nom, Dustin Lance Black's nom, Amy Adams, Viola Davis AND Taraji Henson all getting noms(I was a 100% sure that atleast one of them wouldn't), the song 'Jaya Ho' getting a nom(even though I feel bad for The Boss, 3 should have always been the total no. of noms for this category), TDK's 8 nominations, Iron Man's 2, Wall-E's SIX(!), Kate getting only one nom, that too for The Reader, THAT TOO as Best Leading Actress. All in all, pretty surprising. This still has the potential to be awesome i.e. if TDK sweeps almost all of the technical categories(and Heath's award of course) and SM sweeps almost all of the top categories. Or Button might make a 13-award cleansweep beating out Ben-Hur, Titanic and LOTR's joint record and causing all my friends to horrifically die of simultaneous heart-attacks.
