    Go revolutionary road!!!!!

  2. Chris

I can hear the impending wrath of the fanboys…

  3. Dan Tralder

Is it just me, or were those AWFUL. Although I was glad to be right about Stephen Daldry.

  4. Ncick

Luckily dark knight was not nominated but the revolutionary road snub is awful.

  5. Chris

Can't believe they nominated Benjamin Button. What a mediocre film.

And if TDK didn't make it in picture, I thought Nolan would at least be in for director.

  6. cheesleby

Wow – the British films have done well – Slumdog Millionaire is great, as is The Reader.

  7. jan

…i am dissapointed… TDK should have been in for the movie, and directing.. i really really don't know what everybody sees on the benjamin button movie… i really don't think it's something so fantastic… and the other movies…well frost nixon… i think the guys choosing nominated ones should go to hell

  8. Will

What the hell?! No TDK love? This is why nobody watches the Oscars because they refuse to nominate great movies that the general public love. And once again it shows that Weinstein knows how to buy votes to get his movies Oscars this is BS!!!

  9. sanna

Kate Winslet got the nomination (of course) but The Reader in the leading category? well…. Both of her perfonmances were amazing! I mean in Revolutionary Road and in The Reader.

  10. Jose

Will . Yeah the general public like, but imagine if it was like that instead of nominating art like movies . Thats right it would be the MTV awards

    Best picture

    The dark knight
    Iron Man
    The increadible hulk
    Saw 5

Im just shaking thinking about it .

  11. cheesleby

    British films have done well!

  12. John Debono

Well the oscars had a chance to gain the ratings and respect of the public again by nominating TDK and what do they do? Just ignore this golden chance and go into safe crappy movie about Nazis territory. Lets just be happy Ledger got his nomination.
P.S Also pissed that Sally Hawkins got screwed over for Angelina Jolie

  13. Chris

Maybe if Batman goes back in time to the Holocaust, the next movie will get a good shot at being nominated.

  14. Jonathon

I called The Dark Knight snubbing – Thank GOD! – but no Clint? Gran Torino for nothing?! And I'm sorry The Reader was trash: Weinstein, Oscar-baiting, It's-a-Holocaust-movie-so-we-have-to-nominate-it TRASH! If Winslet wins, it will have been for the wrong film. But since they nominated her for The Reader, I think the award is Hathaway's.

  15. Nc\ick

Batman was not so good. But the academy still sucks.Milk was nothing exceptional.Just because most of the voters are gay doesn't mean they have to nominate it.

  16. Patricia

Hurray! Richard Jenkins was nominated. I would dearly love it if he won but admit that he's a long shot.

  17. Scott

I love Kate Winslet's leading actress nod for The Reader. She was definitely Oscar worthy, and better than Revolutionary Road.

No TDK in major categories definitely has me peeved, but I'm happy The Reader squeezed in there, it was amazing.

In Bruges gets a screenplay nod, sweet justice. Still would've loved to dream and see Farrell in best actor.

I wasn't surprised that Jenkins/Eastwood didn't both make it. Eastwood has gotten his love, and I didn't think they'd nominate two old guys (just an observation).

Anyways, I'm mildly disappointed with the nominees because of no Dark Knight, but this year was a mild year….I will be happy on Oscar night if Slumdog takes it home.

  18. Yavor

well, I'm Glad Kate Winslett did not get nominated for 101 awards again ! There's nothing supporting about her role in THE READER, and I watched REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, and trust me, it's not as good as Kate fans would like it to be … I also watched Doubt and know that Meryl will win, finally after 26 years !

  19. William

Ugh, as if the Slumdog sucking up wasn't bad enough, it kicks out "The Boss" for two Original Song Nominee's. The Reader is Mediocre and doesn't belong anywhere in the major categories, except Best Actress. All it's presence does is strengthen the Oscar's criticism towards Holocaust Movies, and bowing to Weinstein.

  20. Dan Tralder

Yeah, I suppose I should be mildyl happy, since outside of Wall-E and Frozen River for best original screenplay, nothing was outside of my top 8 for each category.

  21. alyanna

so happy and relieved. yay for ben button! finally getting the much deserved merits. 13 nominations said it all.

  22. Moeed

I don't understand what was so special in Frost/Nixon to get a nod ahead of TDK..:(

  23. carly

hurray and kudos to oscars for giving 13 noms for ben button! truly the best film of 2008.

  24. jrc ven

quite sad great cate wasnt nominated but 13 nominations for ben button is awesome!

  25. Duedsml

Stick Clint in and TDK and the ratings would improve greatly, too bad they blew it. And most shocking of all, the 5 Pic noms also had their directors and screenplays nominated [very rare], at least no one can complain about that this year.

  26. andrew

i thought 'happy go lucky' was one of the worst films ive ever seen. and this is from someone who loves mike leigh. 'naked' had a huge effect on me growing up. but this film was terrible. i was speechless. i cant believe there was a direct quote about the '666 barcode' in it – lifted directly from one of his own films!
the opening on the bike, and then the last terrible scene on the boat – all ADR – were two of the worst scenes ever. i never usually bother commenting on these things as im busy with my own work. but this film was so bad i almost thought it was going to be a mockumantary half way through and Leigh had been playing us…

    what you guys think?

  27. carl

i knew it ben button leads with 13 noms! this is amazing and well deserve indeed. kudos to david fincher and paramount/warner for this great film.

  28. adu

This is awful. Dark kKnight should have made best picture instead of the overrated Milk and way too overrated Frost/Nixon. Also it is really sad to see that Bruce Springsteen missed out on the original song category. That is ridiculous!!

The only thing that will please me now is if Button kicks ass of the Slumdog!

  29. JUG

Shocked and appalled at the TDK snub. This is pretentiousness of the worst kind. The Academy decide not to even nominate the best film of the year just because it's based on a comic book.

The public and the film critics who all recognized how great TDK was must think the Academy is really out of touch.

  30. Garrett

I'm extremely happy In Bruges and Michael Shannon got nominations. I'm a little shocked Vicky Cristina Barcelona failed to get nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

  31. Risa

Wow, both Sally Hawkins and DiCaprio got screwed over for BRANGELINA. PATHETIC really! But then again they did nominate Richard Jenkins and THE READER(Best Picture) as I had predicted which were well deserved.

Also It's really hard to comprehend how couldn't they find any more songs to be of "oscar" standard for the Original Song category. A.R. Rahman has all my support to win the Original Score award but two songs from Slumdog Millionaire might have been the result of some extraordinarycampaign from the studio. Come on!

  32. chewbaca69

I really disliked Revolutionary so I am glad that got the snub in most of the biggies. I liked the Reader a lot, but believe the Dark Knight was a landmark film and should of gotten a best picture nom.

  33. chewbaca69

NOTE: I am also very displeased that The Wrestler pretty much got snubbed.

  34. J.R.

Oh my God! They've snubbed "The Dark Knight"! The ONE film that rekindled my love for the movies (not to mention it broke box-office records and was critically acclaimed), and the Academy snubbed it. It was the BEST picture of 2008 because it was so damn exciting and it had such an excellent story. It wasn't doused in intellectual melodramatics either. Oh, they've also snubbed "Gran Torino". Grr… The Academy should go f*** itself (but then again they f*** themselves every years).

On the plus side, I'm excited to see Taraji P. Henson (who was the ONLY redeeming factor to the over-rated "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Mickey Rourke, Robert Downey Jr., Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and (most of all) Heath Ledger nominated. Heath Ledger, of course, trumps EVERY performance nominated, and it'll be years until I see a performance as good as his. I do hope that Danny Boyle wins Best Director and "Slumdog Millionaire" wins Best Picture, but I wish that would've been Christopher Nolan's and "The Dark Knight" win. Also I'm excited to see "Australia" (which I loved) with a nomination for Best Costume Design (but it won't win).

In all honesty, I would have loved to have seen Will Smith and Rosario Dawson nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress. Dawson's performance in "Seven Pounds" is so unappreciated and overlooked. It was a sincere and sublime performance, and I'm quite impressed with her. In my opinion, her performance overshadows the nominees for Best Actress. Go Rosario Dawson!

  35. patrizia

the curious case of Benjamin Button is NOT Fight Club! I'm sorry but Fincher was REALLY good in that movie! (also Norton)

  36. LJ

    They snubbed springsteen !! WTF?!

  37. Vik

Add me to the number of people bewildered about Button's popularity. I like David Fincher's work but this is not even close to his best. I hope Slumdog bites Ben Button's wrinkled ass off otherwise it would be Crash/Brokeback all over again. And Frost/Nixon AND The Reader over TDK for BP? Snobbish Academy! Why couldn't stupid Brangelina get snubbed instead? And I'm REALLY shocked that Gran Torino got nothing.

Oh well, atleast there are lots of bright spots about these noms. Downey Jr.'s nom, Dustin Lance Black's nom, Amy Adams, Viola Davis AND Taraji Henson all getting noms(I was a 100% sure that atleast one of them wouldn't), the song 'Jaya Ho' getting a nom(even though I feel bad for The Boss, 3 should have always been the total no. of noms for this category), TDK's 8 nominations, Iron Man's 2, Wall-E's SIX(!), Kate getting only one nom, that too for The Reader, THAT TOO as Best Leading Actress. All in all, pretty surprising. This still has the potential to be awesome i.e. if TDK sweeps almost all of the technical categories(and Heath's award of course) and SM sweeps almost all of the top categories. Or Button might make a 13-award cleansweep beating out Ben-Hur, Titanic and LOTR's joint record and causing all my friends to horrifically die of simultaneous heart-attacks.

  38. Steve

Not seen Slumdog, but love M.I.A., so I heard "O Saya" and my god what a good song. I might have to find more music from A.R. Rahman.

  39. Tim

If you are pissing and moaning about TDK not getting a nomination, I agree. The Dark Knight was a better movie than Benjamin Button, so was Revolutionary Road. Nolan deserves more credit than Fincher this year. Guess I should've seen it coming. But why the hell did they not Nominate "The Wrestler" by Bruce Springsteen for best song? That was honestly the most astonishing snub this year, the fact that only THREE songs were chosen and that the shitty peter gabriel song was nominated over The Wrestler. Who the fuck are these people. AND BRAD PITT OVER LEO!?!?!?!?!?!!?!? Don't people recognize talent when they see it?

  40. Raj

    Where the hell is TDK??????

It was just as good as Slumdog Millioaire. And how come In Bruges didnt get any more respect and i hope it wins original screenplay. The Reader looks good, but not best picture worthy. AR Rahman is a true inspiration to all Indians. I hope he wins and Slumdog Millionaire wins best picture.

  41. Johnny

Although Kate Winslet's performance was great, her nomination for the Reader over Rev. Road just further convencies me that she won't win this year. I would love to see her win, but the Academy will see past her desperate campagin and probably award it to Hathaway(also deserving). So now its a three way battle-Hathaway, Streep and Winslet. In my opinion, Hathaway should win, her acting was superb in RGM, but I understand that the Academy might give it to Winslet as a lifetime achievement thing, but if she does win, I won't be mad becuase it is well deserved.

  42. Emily

You cannot believe how happy i am that Kate Winslet got the nomination for The Reader and NOT revolutionary road.. i was campaigning for it and no one would agree with me.. the oscar voters knew it was the better performance and the better film hence also being pleased with its best film nom.. The Reader is a beautiful, moving and thought provoking film that deserves those nominations.
VERY pleased that Doubt got its 4 acting nominations, Meryl, Philip, Amy and Viola deserve them. And MERYL OSCAR no3 PLEASE!
expected the academy to like Angelina.. they do like the insane house films.. Melissa Leo tho.. no.
Did love Ben Button even tho so many don't but so too love slumdog… so they should fight it out :D but SM should NOT be aloud a clean sweep

  43. Alex

I agree with most of these, but how in the holy hell is Springsteen not nominated? Why are there only 3 nominations for original song? Last year ENCHANTED had 3 nominations on it's own. This makes no sense to me. Glad to see Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins and Josh Brolin nominated. Can't see any of them winning though, they all seem to be overshadowed and Jenkins has the unfortunate luck of his movie being release a lot earlier in the year.

I guess Bolt just gets nominated because they need 3??? Why else would it be there?

  44. Vik

"I guess Bolt just gets nominated because they need 3??? Why else would it be there?"

Apparently the Academy voters with their short-term memories forgot all about a flick called 'Horton Hears a Who' released early in the year.

  45. Scott

I agree, even though I'd rather see Slumdog win best original song, overlooking springsteen might be the biggest shock of the oscar nominees. that song was loved by everybody, or so i thought. instead we get some stupid song from wall-e.

  46. mellix

I'm a bit disappointed neither Colin Farrell nor Brendan Gleeson made it into the actor/supporting actor categories, i thought they both were brilliant in 'In Bruges'. Glad to see the screenplay nominated though… Other than that nothing really surprised me.

  47. jan

    @Ncick:

    :D great reaction :D

  48. Abhishek-The Oscar Maniac

i am sad that TDK has failed to make the cut.the British films have done well this year..well i still remember couple of years back when Elen De Genres said in the Oscar ceremony that "you dont know who is going to win unless you are British and then you know you have a pretty good shot!!"lolzz..atleast TDK should have been nominated for Best Picture and Nolan for Best Director…thank god Clint Eastwood was not nominated for Best Actor…Gran Torino was a great movie but it was more like a Bollywood flick of Amitabh Bachchan wrapped in Hollywood Plastic!!!But i am happy to see Slumdog Millionaire making it big in terms of nominations….people here in India are very happy to see it getting nominated for Oscar….it was almost 3 decades ago when Gandhi was nominated for Oscar….that was the last time a movie on Indian subject won all the top awards…
though i always felt Dustin Hoffman was more deserving winner for Tootsie than Ben Kingsley as Gandhi…..thanks to the editor of the portal-Brad Brevet for keeping all the nominations and letting us know abt the contenders….thankxx Brad….it's seems that A.R.Rahman will win the award for Original Score and best song…but how in the earth can Bruce Springsteen miss out a nomination for The Wrestler…i mean thats absurd….is it a tactics to give Slumdog another extra award???
In the supporting actor category Heath Ledger is surely going to win but can we have a tie this year coz Rob Downey jnr. was brilliant in Tropic Thunder….we must have a tie this year…it has happened in the past…why not this time…this is RDJ's comeback year with a solid performance in Iron Man and TT…hope it's a tie there….hey Brad what do you think…is there any chance of a tie???
In the Animated film category WALL-E will win for sure and i also expect it to win the Original Screenplay award….lastly i think Waltz with Bashir will win the award in Foreign Language category……..

  49. Abhishek-The Oscar Maniac

i forgot to add how can TDK even miss the original score nomination….Sid Glanis & co. neds a mental check up…..

  50. soulsteelgray

Commenting solely on Best Original Song because it's the one category that really shocked me… freakin' yes, O… Saya got nominated! It's the one song that managed to catch my attention, probably due to M.I.A.'s involvement. I'm surprised at Springsteen's snub, especially since I'd give the nomination to The Wrestler over Jai Ho, but eh…

  51. Heath

"Down to Earth" from Wall-E was a spectacular song that neatly tied up a fantastic movie during a unique epilogue/credit sequence. By no means is it stupid. The Springsteen snub was shocking, but the Peter Gabriel nomination was well deserved.

  52. John Debono

You know what, hollywood asked for it I'm egging Tom Hanks' house. If we get the academy where it hurts that will show them to screw over fans royally.

  53. Tim

@andrew: I haven't seen any of Mike Leigh's other movies, but I couldn't disagree with you more about Happy Go Lucky. It can be a slow movie, but you have to understand it's completely carried by sally hawkins performance as poppy. It was one of the most enthusiastic roles I've seen this year. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Poppy and Scott the driving instructor.

  54. Brad Pitt getting a nomination? That's a good call. Taraji P. Henson? Also a good call. Best Picture and Best Director? That's too much of a stretch. Especially when you are placing them above Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight. And this isn't even a fanboy talking. It's just boggling that a great movie, with several, not just one, but several great plot twists not get nominated for best picture. Not to mention a director, who found a way to do such a complicated movie with such precise actions scenes, with IMAX cameras, and as little CGI as possible.

  55. Aleš

I am so pissed right know, they didnt include TDK for Best Picture, better to say nothing more!!

  56. stylewriter

This is just a bad list all-around with some major pooch-screwing going on. The snubbings of Dark Knight, Eastwood, Springsteen, the Coen brothers and Woody Allen for screenplay, and the Acting brnach essentially snubbing Winslet for herself … it's a strange list and I fear Oscar is inching toward irrelevance by doing things like this. The fact awards shows like the Globes and the Critics Choice Awards seem to be closing in on the amount of buzz they get compared to the Oscars the Academy really needs to do something. They need to overhaul the voting system because the acting branch has way too much power to dictate picture nominees with about 15% of the entire membership (and are we really supposed to believe there are only 8,000 people alive worthy of being voting members of the Academy?) The voting membership is becoming more and more of a nitch group than a group acknowledging overall excellence in movies.

  57. Dave

    Are these movies real?

I don't even think I've seen half of them in a theatre for more than a week let alone in a theatre at all.

Oh that's right, the oscars are for movies that a group of yuppy critics think need awards.

WALL-E, The Dark Knight. I know those movies. I guess I'd rather watch a movie that entertains me.

That's why I'd rather watch People's choice awards for movies PEOPLE(THE PUBLIC) vote for.

  58. Elle

Good to see some love for Melissa Leo, Richard Jenkins, Michael Shannon. Dissapointed not to see Dark Knight in the top category's. Overall this was a miss year by the academy imo.

  59. Quake82

Kate Winslet receives a nomination for a "leading" role? WTF!? How then is it fair that Heath Ledger only receives a nod for "supporting?" Also, how dare the Academy not even recognize Gran Torion, no acting, no directing, not even a token "Original Song" nom. – shame on you voters.

Further still, Revolutionary Road was robbed of nods for Best Picture & Best Director.

Now to the task at hand: NO DARK KNIGHT NOMS FOR DIRECTING OR PICTURE!!!!! Man, I thought for sure if it didn't get nominated for one it would get nominated for the other. Damn!

  60. Ethan

Nominating the Reader (60% on rotten tomatoes, dudes. That's prettys shitty) was an excuse not to nominate Wall-e and TDK. Okay, I'm going to have to cool it now, otherwise my Academy hatred will rise up again.

  61. Abhishek-The Oscar Maniac

GUS VAN SANT will win the best Director award……..did you hear the noise there….

  62. Dave

You have to wonder what these academy awards people are like peronsally.

And in terms of Heath Ledger, sadly the only reason he was nominated this year was because he played a cowboy in a movie that those academy award people loved a couple years ago.

I didn't think TDK was the best movie I saw last year but it was one of the top ones. Really, are these Academy award people those same people you see at Starbucks on their macbooks writing HiKu's?

  63. natan

@Steve: A.R.Rahman is a very good musician. i hav been a fan from his album which made revolution in indian music. he sounds so nice/ i got all his tracks. lov it

  64. James

Best song for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE : "JAI HO", and Original Score, of course!!!
