COMIC CON: 'Resident Evil: Extinction' Footage

We can't show it to you... but we can talk about it!

Paul Anderson, Milla Jovovich, and Ali Larter were all on hand to show off some raw Resident Evil: Extinction footage at Comic Con (this was different footage from the new trailer available here).

The clip contained many striking images such as Las Vegas under sand and destroyed in the desert, overrun by zombies. There was also a great shot of a bullet tearing through a zombie's head, with the hole big enough to show the shooter from the other side (musta been a shotgun shell, eh?). The plot of the movie is the search for the original Alice (Jovovich), I believe in an attempt to either kill her or find the cure. The film also has zombie crows, who've been feeding off the flesh of the infected humans. Milla is shown standing underneath a sky of fire, but it was hard to tell if this was just an artistic shot or a real scene from the movie. Zombies get run over (by Ali Larter in a Hummer) and shot with an arrow through the head. Actually, the zombies take the brunt of bullets in one massive desert scene where a variety of machine guns, pistols, throwing knives, and shotguns are used to perfection.

After the footage Anderson, Larter, and Jovovich stuck around to take questions. One member of the audience mentioned to Anderson that he hadn't liked Alien vs. Predator, but he was quickly escorted away from the microphone. Based on our 22% user rating for AVP I'd say the kid was on to something. Anderson fired back with "Well, a lot of people did like it" but Jovovich probably figured the guy had a point when she said "It's probably because I wasn't in it."

Neither Ali Larter or Milla have ever played the video game, but Milla mentioned her little brother loved it. Milla herself said her favorite genre was probably sci-fi, and one of the comments from the crowd gave props to The Fifth Element (which I loved too). Oh, one thing I forgot to mention, the panel was introduced by a line of about 20 girls dressed in red Alice style dresses.

The film, in true trilogy fashion, was pumped up as the "bloodiest yet" and it seems to be the end of the series, at least so far as the current production team is concerned. They recreated half of the Las Vegas strip for the movie, and shot it in MexiCali. Milla mentioned it got up to 140 degrees during filming, yikes. Many people asked if Jill Valentine was alive but the question was pretty much ducked. Paul Anderson also explained why he went a radically different direction for the initial film versus the game, "because in a horror movie you have to kill people and I don't think Capcom would have wanted me killing off their main characters."

He's probably spot on there. Look for Resident Evil: Extinction this September.
