‘Push’ May Actuallty be Pretty Good
Camilla Belle, Chris Evans, Djimon Hounsou and director Paul McGuigan were on hand to introduce the Summit Entertainment film Push. McGuigan recently directed Lucky Number Slevin and a film I think was a little underrated called Wicker Park.
The first bit of footage we saw appears to be a rough version of the opening credits, which features a bunch of stock footage as the backstory is revealed, which basically boils down to a battle between Watchers who can see the future, Movers which are telekinetic and can move things and Pushers who are people that can put memories in your head and influence your decisions. One example is shown in a clip in which Djimon Hounsou’s character influences one man to put a gun in his mouth and kill himself by putting the memory into his head that it isn’t loaded.
Other powers included Sniffers, Shifters (change the shape of things), Wipers (erase your memory), Stitchers and Shadows. The descriptions were a bit loose, but the names themselves giveaway a lot of it. I can only guess there are also Screamers based on the second clip we saw featuring Nick (Chris Evans), a Mover, and Cassie (Dakota Fanning), a Watcher, eating a little Chinese. Fanning, 13, who appears much older and more mature than we have seen her in some time. We even get to hear her drop a “shit” bomb after she has a vision. Villains appear, Fanning throws a gun, Evans does a force push and one dude starts SCREAMING and I can only hope the audio in theates is better than it was hear because it was deafening. Not only did it blow out the fish tanks in the preview, it blew out my freaking ears!
The idea for Push seems pretty good. The Djimon clip is pretty good, but the second one with the screaming seemed a little … off. Hard to really say much since it was so short and considering the noise was terrible.
Push hits theaters on February 6, 2009 and the official synopsis is below:
“Push” is a sci-fi thriller that takes us into the secret world of psychic espionage. Our hero is Nick Gant (Chris Evans), a young man whose father was genetically altered to be the perfect government assassin. After the brutal murder of his father, Nick swears revenge on the agency that created him.
Hidden in the underworld of Hong Kong, Nick assembles a group of rogue psychics to defeat Division, the covert agency responsible for creating and experimenting with psychic drugs for decades.
Nick teams up with Cassie Holmes, a thirteen-year-old girl who can see the future, to track down a missing girl and a stolen suitcase that could potentially bring the downfall of Division — the key to their mutual revenge. Combining their skills, they outwit assassins and learn about Division’s latest secret weapon — a powerful and new experimental drug called R16, which could shift the tides of psychic warfare.
