Clive Owen has been tapped to star as the private eye Philip Marlowe from the classic mystery series novels from Raymond Chandler including "The Big Sleep" and "Farewell My Lovely."

The project is in the early stages as Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment are still looking for writers and directors as and are still unsure as to which title they will adapt. Interest in Owen was apparently sparked thanks to his narrative style in Sin City.

The film adaptations of Chandler's works will keep to the noir spirit of the prose, as well as retaining the background seeting of the 1940s in Los Angeles, with Marlowe continuing to be the hard-drinking, wisecracking gumshoe.
