Will Geiger was born in New York, and lived in various parts of the U.S. as the son of an undercover F.B.I. agent. While moving from town to town, he developed a strong passion for writing, photography and theater. He attended the University of California, Irvine as a theater major where he studied with renowned professor and author Robert Cohen. After directing and acting in various university productions, Will was accepted to the theater program at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, where he studied acting and directing with some of England’s finest. Upon completion of R.A.D.A., he moved from London to Rome, Italy where he became fluent in Italian and worked in various production positions including director of the Italian television series Family Business.
Will returned to the U.S., where he wrote and directed many short films including In Love and War, which won awards at festivals in the U.S. and abroad including the Silver Plaque Award at the Chicago Film Festival.
Ocean Tribe, his first feature film, was shot in 24 days with a budget of $380,000. The film tells the story of four friends who journey from Bodega, California to Baja, Mexico with a dying friend on one last surfing expedition. Poetically mirroring the compassionate solidarity of a pod of dolphins which cares for a dying member, the tribe of surfers spends one last summer returning to sacred waters, keeping their friend’s spirits afloat, and finally making peace with the inevitable tides of change.
Ocean Tribe premiered at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival where Will won the award for Best Director. The film received critical acclaim in Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, TheLos Angeles Times, American Cinematographer, Detour and the L.A. Weekly. The film also won the Grand Prize award at the Charleston International Film Festival and Best Drama at the Houston International Film Festival. Mike Medavoy’s Phoenix Pictures picked up the U.S. rights and J&M Entertainment acquired foreign territories. The film played in many countries in Europe and Asia, and was on the top ten lists of several reviewers in Japan.
During the period Ocean Tribe screened at the Seattle International Film Festival, Will was invited by the festival to take part in the Fly Filmmaking program. The festival gives a filmmaker two rolls of 16mm film and two days to make a short film with a small local crew and local actors. Will’s resulting short film Red Man was about a dying Native American and his search for a burial ground amidst the concrete jungle of Seattle. Red Man is currently playing on the Independent Film Channel.
Will has citizenship in the U.S., Italy and Canada.
