Salma Hayek has proven herself as a prolific producer and actress in both film and television. This year, she was nominated for an Academy Award® as Best Actress for her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in Julie Taymor’s acclaimed Frida, on which she also served as producer. She also garnered a SAG nomination and a BAFTA nomination. In total, Frida earned six Oscar® nominations and received two statuettes, for makeup and musical score.

Hayek recently produced Showtime’s “The Maldonado Miracle,” which also marked her directorial debut. The film starred Peter Fonda, Mare Winningham and Ruben Blades. In addition, Hayek co-produced and starred in In the Time of the Butterflies, for which she was nominated for a Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Award. Hayek also produced the Mexican film No One Writes to the Colonel, directed by Arturo Ripstein and based on the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The film was selected for official competition at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

Born and raised in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, Hayek studied International Relations and Drama in college in Mexico. She starred in the title role of “Teresa,” one of the most successful primetime television shows in Mexico. The program has been syndicated to more than 20 countries around the world. Other Mexican credits include Midaq Alley, based on a novel by Nobel-prize winner Naguib Mafouz.
