Why Didn't Malick Use a Tree to Score 'The Tree of Life'?

No, seriously...

Okay, so this is a real stretch if we're talking about movie news, but I found this following video created by German artist Bartholomaus Traubeck as he has taken the cross-section of a tree and turned it into a record to be entirely fascinating.

Traubeck has dubbed the composition "Years" as he has designed a record player that plays slices of wood using a PlayStation Eye Camera and the computer program Ableton Live. Somehow, using this process, the year ring data of the tree is translated into music and surprisingly enough, it doesn't sound entirely like noise.

I'm not sure I would want to have it playing in my living room, but I could definitely see it supplying the score to a horror film. I could even see it accompanying something like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford or even Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will be Blood.

Give it a listen below. [Flavorwire]

Share a Pint of Guinness with Michael Fassbender

Fassbender cheeses it up over a pint with a friend

Before he was Stelios in 300 or Bobby Sands in Hunger. Before he was Connor in Fish Tank, Burke in Jonah Hex, Rochester in Jane Eyre, Magneto in X-Men: First Class, Carl Jung in A Dangerous Method or the sex addicted Brandon Sullivan in Shame.

Even before he was a resurrected Nazi professor in Blood Creek, Michael Fassbender was featured in the following 2004 Guinness commercial directed by James Brown.

The description from post production agency Windmill Lane goes like this:

Director James Brown set about telling a tall story that has it's beginnings on the rugged east coast of Ireland and finishes in a typical 'Irish Bar' in New York. Somewhere in the middle the Atlantic Ocean gets a look in. A big part of the mood and atmosphere was largely attributable to the Grade on Windmill's Spirit combined with enhancement and compositing on Flame. The end result? Dark and Mysterious just like a pint!

Give it a watch below and thanks to E! for the heads up. Look for Fassbender in Haywire this Friday and in Ridley Scott's Prometheus this summer.

The Dark Knight Rises Entertainment Weekly coverEntertainment Weekly has debuted five new images from Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises on top of the cover image you see to the right.

We also get a quote from Nolan regarding the voice of Bane (Tom Hardy), something fans were complaining about understanding what he was saying after catching the prologue in front of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol as well as the film's first trailer.

Nolan tells EW, "I think when people see the film, things will come into focus. Bane is very complex and very interesting and when people see the finished film people will be very entertained by him."

Personally, this is just funny to me. This is exactly why I didn't want to see that six-minute prologue and why I do my best to not watch trailers. You want to see a film as a finished product, not as spoiler-filled snippets. Then again, what do I know?

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters in its completed form on July 20. You can check out the four other images from EW's preview below and get more where that Nolan quote came from right here.

Along with that first look at Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy (see that here), USA Today also brings a couple of other new looks.

First there's the image above of Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, undoubtedly one of 2012's most anticipated titles in which Scott explores the same space occupied by his classic 1979 sci-fi feature Alien as a team of inter-space explorers to discover the origins of mankind only to end up unleashing forces that could destroy all humanity.

Prometheus hits theaters on June 8 and you can watch the trailer and check out other images from the film right here.

Watch a Japanese Trailer for 'Battleship'

So, essentially, this is Transformers

Battleship Japanese trailer

A Japanese trailer for Peter Berg's Battleship has popped up online and just skimming through it looking for a couple of screen captures it looks like it is exactly the same kind of film as Transformers only this is an extraordinarily loose adaptation of a board game (which makes me feel stupid just writing) and doesn't have any matter of built-in audience.

Starring Taylor Kitsch, Tom Arnold, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Hamish Linklater, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson and Josh Pence, Battleship is set to hit theaters on May 18, 2012 and of the twenty films I included in a recent poll asking readers "If You Could See One of These 20 Upcoming 2012 Releases Today, which One Would It Be?" Battleship is second to last with only five votes, just ahead of the three earned by Wrath of the Titans. Give this new trailer a watch and tell me if it makes you more or less interested than you previously were.

Thanks to CinemaTeaser we have eight new character posters from The Avengers and once again they feature eight familiar faces in ever so familiar poses as the marketing campaign for this film appears content with using the same images for pretty much everything and simply adjusting the background and logo a bit each time.

Yet again you see we have looks at Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk).

I have included thumbnails for each poster below, just give one of them a click to browse through the gallery and I have also included a new German trailer for the film that features some new footage, but isn't subtitled so take what you can get.

Three more images from Empire's latest The Dark Knight Rises photo spread have been scanned and uploaded online courtesy of Coming Soon giving you some not-so-revealing looks at the film if you've been paying close enough attention to the set images and videos that have made their way online.

The reports also includes some quotes from Christian Bale talking about his co-stars.

On Anne Hathaway who plays Catwoman: "In many ways, she has the hardest job. There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne's role as being the toughest job of any of us."

On Tom Hardy who plays Bane: He is "a phenomenal actor. I like working with him a great deal. He goes the whole hog. I know that Bane has been seen in movies before. But, in my eyes, Tom is essentially creating Bane for the first time so there's great freedom for him to be able to do so."

On Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays Gotham beat cop, John Blake: "Joseph is a very intriguing guy… He's somebody who truly seems to love acting. He's a good, smart guy. He did a very good job in the movie."

I've included the two other images directly below.
