Care to Guess What Film Will Open the 2011 Cannes Film Festival? Announcement Tomorrow...

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Only a few hours ago I turned in my application for the 64th Cannes Film Festival and now Cédric Succivalli of ICS Film lets us know tomorrow will see the announcement of the opening night film.

Last year Ridley Scott's Robin Hood opened the fest with a bit of a thud and here's a list of the films that opened the fest in recent years:

  • 2010 - Robin Hood (dir. Ridley Scott)
  • 2009 - Up (dir. Pete Docter and Bob Peterson)
  • 2008 - Blindness (dir. Fernando Meirelles)
  • 2007 - My Blueberry Nights (dir. Wong Kar-wai)
  • 2006 - The Da Vinci Code (dir. Ron Howard)
  • 2005 - Lemming (dir. Dominik Moll)
  • 2004 - Bad Education (dir. Pedro Almodovar)
  • 2003 - Fanfan la Tulipe (dir. Gérard Krawczyk)
  • 2002 - Hollywood Ending (dir. Woody Allen)
  • 2001 - Moulin Rouge (dir. Baz Luhrmann)

So what will this year's opening film be?

I'm sure your instant reaction would be to say Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, but Cedric shoots that out of the water immediately when he first alluded to the news in a Twitter post saying, "Expect a BIG Cannes announcement tomorrow... And this one will have nothing to do with Malick."

Aurelien from Cinema Teaser and I batted a couple names back and forth recently, mine being Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Not only does it open nine days later, but it would also give reason for the red carpet to feature both Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz. Aurelien mentioned rumors of Jean-Jacques Annaud's Black Gold and Luc Besson's The Lady, but as he said to me, those are just rumors.

Any of you out there care to take a guess? If not, we'll know soon enough.

Kung Fu Panda 2. The first one was there.

P.S. That guy that made the Twitter post said no to a Pirates possibility.

  • Mickche

I think they'll go for The Lady or a more artistic film. I think they will try an pick a film which is sure to have some success after the bad reaction to Robin hood.

Pootie Tang 2? Please dear god let it be Pootie Tang 2!!!

  • Tony

    It is TAKE SHELTER !

  • Martian Army

Darn, I'm glad you mentioned that about it not being Tree of Life, cause that would have been my guess.

I'd have to bet they'd go smaller this year. I'm gonna make a fun guess and say Paul Rudd's My Idiot Brother. It's probably be a long shot, but it would be certainly be something different.

  • Jezza

I predict The Hangover part 2 will open Cannes in 2011.

  • Nick

    I'd say Kung Fu Panda.

  • Telmo

maybe "Midnight in Paris"! a new woody allen movie located in france with stars like marion cottilard, rachel mcadams, owen wilson, adrien brody, michael sheen, kathy bates etc! sounds like a winner to me!

      Sounds like you're right.
