Deadline Hollywood is reporting Chris Hemsworth is set to take on the title role in Kenneth Branagh's Thor, the filmed adaptation of the Marvel comic first launched back in 1962.

Hemsworth can currently be seen on the big screen in Star Trek playing the ill-fated father of James T. Kirk. Finke at Deadline is also reporting he will be playing the lead in United Artists' upcoming remake of Red Dawn. This, on top of currently filming Cabin in the Woods for Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) who penned that script with Joss Whedon.

Finke adds a small bit of back-story to the casting note saying how Hemsworth tested for the role of Thor early on but was passed on, only to have his agent, William Ward at ROAR Management, recommend his name once again late in the game. They agreed, and after doing so were quite impressed. Branagh reportedly came to town last week and saw the Chris test and made the final casting decision today.

Finke lists the following names as actors who also tested for the role: Daniel Craig (turned it down), Kevin McKidd ("Rome"), Triple-H (Blade: Trinity, Charlie Hunnam ("Sons Of Anarchy"), Tom Hiddleston (HBO's The Gathering Storm), Alexandar Skarsgard ("True Blood"), Liam Hemsworth and Joel Kinnaman.

Chris' brother Liam was just cast opposite Miley Cyrus in The Last Song, a filmed adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel. Liam also tested for the role of Thor.

Thor centers on a blonde-tressed, hammer-wielding hero who's sent to Earth to protect mankind. The film is set to open on May 20, 2011.

Hmm…Seems like a good choice. Obviously I haven't seen enough of his work to really form an opinion, although I thought he did his job well in "Star Trek", he looks the part.

I have trust that Kenneth Branagh can deliver a good film out of what will easily be the most difficult character to fit into the current Marvel "Avengers" format.

    I'm looking forward to it.

he did good in star trek, and sure does look the part, branagh better not mess this up, after creating all the hoopla over the casting. now we just need captain america, and were good to go

He was on the Aussie soap Home & Away a few years back. He's quite a good actor – I always thought he would have been well-suited to play Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels.

Haven't seen Star Trek so I can't comment on his performance there.

Kinda off topic, but since ddurden33 mentioned "Captain America" casting, the two guys that I have in mind as the only guys for it are Mike Vogel (Who just barely lost out on Captain Kirk) and Ben Mckenzie. Both look the part, are in the right age bracket (or at least play young) and have the chops for it.

I don't like the directoral choice for Cap nearly as much as I like Branagh for "Thor" but they seem to know what they're doing with their movies.

You know of the things you just cant see working on the big screen? Thor is one for me. I'd love to be wrong cuz I love super hero flicks. Let's see.
