Bright and early this morning Warner Bros. released the second The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trailer giving you the latest look at the upcoming second film in director Peter Jackson's trilogy of films adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien's more than 75-year-old novel, which will release in theaters on December 13.

Continuing the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug follows his journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Of course, all that aside, the big hope here is finally seeing the dragon Smaug, which will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Watch the trailer directly below and let me know if you think it will be any better than the dull first installment.

The voice of Schmaug; it is upon us. And how very Schmaugy it is. . .

Front page of website: "if it will be any better than the dull first installment"
Under the title of the article: "This thing going to improve on that dull first installment?"
End of the article: "You think it will be any better than the dull first installment" thought the first installment was dull?

      (To the tune of Rawhide)

Walking walking walking, hobbit and dwarves are walking, walking walking walking, where's Smaug?

  • andyluvsfilms

As a devout Lostie, I'm pleased that Evangeline Lilly is in this one, she's a good actress and certainly looks quite Elf-y. As for the trailer, t'was ok, Smauuuug's voice was probably the best bit.

    • GobleGableOneOfUs

I thought she was arguably the best talent on the show. She was certainly the most pleasant to look at!

      • andyluvsfilms

She certainly had the best female role and yes, she is stunning.
ps I love Freaks, I have it on vhs and wont part with it.

I seriously think she consistently put on the most convincing performance of the entire cast. Emerson's character was well written, but imo did require the same range that Lilly's did.

What is this "vhs" object that you refer to? ;)

I enjoyd the first installment, it was very entertaining yet very different from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The second installment of The Hobbit seems to be way better then the first one and more intense. I'm really looking foward seeing this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first Hobbit, so I see no reason why this one won't be just as good, if not better with the world opening up more.

  • Adu

Looks like an epic adventure, very excited to see this. Peter Jackson knows how to make good fantasy films.

  • Aidan Khan

    Looks good. Smaug sounded great.

I enjoyed the first episode immensely. I took my 11 year old nephew who was worried he could not sit through such a long movie because he has ADD but he didn't move through the whole movie.

  • Nathan

I hate the CGI Orcs. Especially the one at 0:41. Why couldn't they spend a little more money on real actors?

    • Nathan

      *CG Orcs.

  • Driver

Uh, I can't stand this... Every time I read the name Smaug, I say to myself Smaaaaaauuuuug. I wonder why.

  • Michael

I enjoyed the first one, this one looks even better.

  • Art

My expectations are not too high for this one but might give it a try because of my boy Cumberbatch.

  • Ian

Just looks like more of the same. I know this story and I know it doesn't need to be three movies long, which means I know it will be bloated with unnecessary stuff. Hopefully it'll at least be shorter than the last one. I don't mind three hour movies but it has to be earned.

  • Winchester

I definitely had issues with the first film that I don't expect will be solved in two more films but I'm willing to concede that seeing the whole trilogy at some point might change my perception of film 1.

  • Django

I love the LOTR trilogy. But The Hobbit was absolute torture. Didn't enjoy a second of it. Unless Smaug gets amazing reviews, this is a definite one to skip.

  • Ryguy815

I really liked the first one and this looks even better. Can't wait.

  • The Jackal

The first film was okay; however, it did feature a great musical score and some pretty impressive cinematography, plus the "Riddles in the Dark" scene was simply brilliant. Still, I left the theater feeling a bit underwhelmed, but overall was glad to return to Middle-Earth. This second trailer for the sequel looks really good, and I'm hoping it'll have a darker tone as opposed to the first film. I'm looking forward to this film.
