Once again it's a big damn shocker at the box office.

It’s been miserable being The Oracle lately. I thought it would be a three movie race for first place – instead it turned into a three movie race for second. Tyler Perry got back to Madea’s style money, even though his previous work, Daddy’s Little Girls didn’t make jack opening weekend. You figure it out.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Zero Weeks In A Row
Was the difference Janet Jackson? Or Miss Jackson if you’re feeling nasty. Not sure. I only know that Tyler Perry owned me.
Result: $21.5 million (My rank: #3, $8.4m off)
But it didn’t finish first, did it? I think we may all be saying “You know what, screw it, just give us something that won’t make us think.”
Result: $11.5 million (My rank: #4, $.7m off)
It underperformed a little but really the story was Tyler Perry. I don’t think the trailers were particularly effective; the movie isn’t exactly a thriller in my mind. Not thrilling enough. It should do well in week two based on word of mouth though.
Result: $11.0 million (My rank: #1, $2.9m off)
It was pretty much a dead heat with Michael Clayton – I don’t know why someone didn’t move the release date. This was the exact same audience, and not many people will see two movies in a weekend. And now that I get to see them for free there’s even one less guy out there.
Result: $11.0 million (My rank: #2, $2.7m off)
It stands at $26m overall and you can be certain an unrated DVD is on the way. So it’s probably not a complete loss.
Result: $7.4 million (My rank: #6, $.7m off)
There really is no explanation for this tanking. The trailer was great. No, the movie wasn’t, but that wouldn’t have affected it to this level because not enough people read movie reviews. So it was either the competition (probably) or people are fatigued with movies about queens (less probable).
Result: $6.1 million (My rank: #5, $3.7m off)
The math here is ugly. It cost $70m to make, and it’s made $40m total. If $24m of that $40m goes to the studio they are $46m in the hole. You can’t make that up on DVD. The only chance they have is if they bet that $24m they’ve already made on black.
Result: $4.5 million (My rank: #7, $1.3m off)
It gained 600 theaters which launched it back into the top ten. The release schedule here is just odd, but it made the third most dollars per screen in the top ten. So perhaps it should have gotten a wider release initially. I don't know, would Kansas have seen this?
Result: $4.0 million (My rank: #8, $.6m off)
It’s got almost $80m in revenue worldwide, about $50m short of the second one. Good luck making that up!
Result: $2.6 million (My rank: #9, $.3m off)
It should crack ten million total before all is said and done. That makes it around the 2500th most successful movie ever. Not bad, eh? We’ll try it again next week folks, pray for me.
Result: $2.1 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
