Box-Office Wrap-Up: July 13 – June 15
Another glorious weekend for The Oracle that just keeps on giving.
The longest Oracle streak ever is due entirely to the Hollywood scheduling beast. It's been one blockbuster after another and they always win. I can't imagine how much money the studio has cost themselves with this over programming, but I'd guess it's more than twenty bucks.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Eleven Weeks In A Row
I feel like the Phoenix order wasn't used enough. I'm a fan of that order. This little ten million dollar variance only represents a fourteen percent miss, well within the acceptable limit. Harry stands at $169m though strangely it's only got a B user rating here at the Rope. Where are the nutso fans?
Result: $77.4 million (My rank: #1, $10.4m off)
2. Transformers
Now that's a beautiful prediction. I'm a little screwed right now because my wife is playing Saved by the Bell on the DVR. This is about the same as punching me in the face over and over.
Result: $36.0 million (My rank: #2, $1.3m off)
3. Ratatouille
$143m in the U.S. and chuggin' along. A 37.9% drop from last week means the kids and the parents are responding to a rat culinary journey. And why not? It's a tale as old as time.
Result: $18.0 million (My rank: #3, $1.9m off)
Strangely not one movie in the top ten dropped 50%, which is the benchmark of word of mouth bleedage. What's happening here is that more people are coming to the theater, because of the choices, but the sheer amount of new movies out is hurting them all as a group. Got all that?
Result: $10.8 million (My rank: #, $1.6m off)
I had Captivity in this slot, that movie was murdered (but more on that later). License held up well, which I'd say means the critical hate towards it wasn't shared by the public as a whole.
Result: $7.4 million (My rank: #6, $2.1m off)
6. 1408
Seriously, where is Captivity? But more on that later. 1408 has been money, and you know everyone and their mom is trying to figure out how to duplicate this formula. But I don't see how they could.
Result: $5.0 million (My rank: #8, $1.1m off)
It looks as though it will come up short of the $100m mark, much like Norbit. Maybe that's a small win for those of us who abhorred it.
Result: $4.9 million (My rank: #7, $.6m off)
8. Knocked Up
Oh crikey, I just checked and Captivity didn't even crack the top ten, so there won't be more on that later! So here is the only verdict: people are finally done with torture porn.
Result: $3.6 million (My rank: #10, $.9m off)
9. Sicko
Three weeks in a row in the top ten, well played America. Sicko stands at $15m overall, which, given the lack of CGI must means this one is set to deliver a modest profit once the DVD hits.
Result: $2.6 million (My rank: #9, $.2m off)
I truly have no idea why this is here, clearly I'm not in tune with about 1 out of every 100 Americans.
Result: $1.9 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
