Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jan. 18 – Jan. 20, 2008

Of course Cloverfield dominated, but Mad Money tanking and 27 Dresses banking was the real story.

Cloverfield had a monster Friday but it couldn't sustain the big mo. The issue is that all these internet types (myself included) rush out and see it the first night. The other shock was the dominance of 27 Dresses. You ladies were starved, eh?
#1 movie predicted correctly: 10 Weeks In A Row
Weekend one was interesting, but the real test will be weekend two. Can Rambo hurt it? As I don't have the theater counts in front of me I'm going to say "maybe."
Result: 41.0 million (My rank: #1, $8.6m off)
I wonder what the public opinion here will be. I've got a friend who was dying to see it, even though I told her not to bother. Don't mind me, I'm just the expert.
Result: 22.4 million (My rank: #2, $8.9m off)
Man, was this a strong little box office weekend. Up 27% from last year. Here's one topic I haven't seen covered; will the lack of new scripted dramas on television help the box office? Someone needs to investigate that. Maybe get "60 Minutes" involved.
Result: 15.1 million (My rank: #3, $4.5m off)
4. Juno
It's made $85m in the states but less than 4k worldwide. There's the real story! No, only kidding, clearly they've got to be very pleased as the only budget here would have been whatever Jason Bateman's assistant cost.
Result: 10.2 million (My rank: #6, $3.0m off)
This film has made $325m worldwide due to soft competition. If you're a writer I'd suggest you penning the next five or so sequels now.
Result: 8.1 million (My rank: #8, $3.1m off)
This was the only film in the top ten to bleed over 50% and it was actually a nasty 56%. Looks like the same old story for the genre – decent weekend one and then crushed.
Result: 7.8 million (My rank: #5, $.9m off)
Wait, so sending a robotic Katie Holmes out to promote this wasn't the route to go? Her lifeless eyes didn't sell comedy? I am shocked!
Result: 7.7 million (My rank: #4, $1.9m off)
They will crack $200m domestically sometime this week. The budget was $60m. Fox must be stunned by this result. I know I am.
Result: 7.0 million (My rank: #7, $1.9m off)
Good to get back on track again here. The only real race left is this versus the other actioner National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Right now Legend is $50m ahead which should be enough.
Result: 5.1 million (My rank: #9, $1.7m off)
I had There Will Be Blood in this spot but Atonement beat it by a ton, $1.6m. Looks like that Golden Globe had some affect after all.
Result: 4.7 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
