Box-Office Wrap-Up: Aug. 3 – Aug. 5
Bourne dominates...
Laremy is stuck in JFK airport so I have to fill in for him. You might think of this as a bad thing, but at least now there will be far less self congratulatory comments scattered throughout this mess.
#1 movie predicted correctly: TWO Weeks In A Row
Well he got the spot right, but the number was a bit off. However, don't look at this as a bad thing… This is what we need, good movies taking the #1 slot with hefty numbers. As a matter of fact this is the best August opening on record and Ultimatum outperformed the debut of any James Bond film… Take that James!
Result: $70.1 million (Laremy's rank: #1, $17m off)
After last weekend's big bang with The Simpsons Movie Laremy over estimated how well it would do this weekend. Basically the $13.6 he was off just combined with the $1.6 he was off with Underdog to make up the deficit. An innocent mistake.
Result: $25.6 million (Laremy's rank: #2, $13.6m off)
3. Underdog
Surprisingly Disney hid Underdog from critics, but that didn't stop it from earning a 17% at RottenTomatoes, a sign that next week's numbers won't be looking too pretty.
Result: $12.0 million (Laremy's rank: #3, $1.6m off)
I saw this movie and Laremy didn't. However, he still managed to hit the rank and dollars dead on. Impressive.
Result: $10.5 million (Laremy's rank: #4, Dead On)
5. Hairspray
Laremy is still underestimating this film, let me tell you now… It is fantastic… One of the best of the year and I hope people continue to go see it.
Result: $9.3 million (Laremy's rank: #7, $0.2m off)
I am impressed once again as $0.2 million off and having the ranking dead on is a win no matter how you look at it. By the way, wanna know what happens in "Deathly Hallows"? Too bad, I'm not a dick.
Result: $9.2 million (Laremy's rank: #6, $0.2m off)
This movie is just plain bad, and the 43% rating at RT proves it. However, people still went to see it. Why people? Don't you talk to friends?
Result: $6.5 million (Laremy's rank: #8, $0.1m off)
8. Transformers
Laremy stated in his Oracle article that this would be the last week for Transformers in the top ten. I don't think so young man.
Result: $5.9 million (Laremy's rank: #10, $0.3m off)
9. Hot Rod
Talk about underperforming. I guess all the folks that would have gone to see this one stayed home to watch the X Games. Did you see Jake Brown fall about 45 feet? If not, check this shit out.
Result: $5.0 million (Laremy's rank: #5, $5.1m off)
10. Bratz: The Movie
I have nothing to say about this. I think Avi Arad called it the X-Men for girls. Nuff said.
Result: $4.3 million (Laremy's rank: #9, $1.8m off)
