Box-Office Wrap-Up: Apr. 25 – Apr. 27, 2008
Baby Mama drama wins the box office with ease!
Back in the high life again! Sure, I was way off on the dollars as far more folks wanted to see a movie this weekend than I thought. The top of the board overperformed while the bottom of the board was as putrid as projected. Let's get one more Oracle in before Summer Blockbuster season starts, eh?
#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Week In A Row
1. Baby Mama
Wow. Clearly 30 Rock has gained traction with the American public. Five years ago no one knew who Tina Fey was. Now she's headlining #1 movies. Gives us all hope, right?
Result: 18.2 million (My rank: #1, $6.8m off)
This did great so far as I'm concerned. It had bad buzz and seems very nichey to me (I mean, would anyone over 40 see this?). I don't forsee a third one in our future though. That's a bonus Oracle prediction for you.
Result: 14.5 million (My rank: #2, $3.2m off)
Curses. I really thought Sarah Marshall would make the leap. Perhaps when the official numbers are announced I'll be vindicated.
Result: 11.2 million (My rank: #4, $.9m off)
I was reading a critic online the other day who said the focus on the box office hurts movies, as in the general public shouldn't care who wins the top slot. I don't know… I've kind of always been a "more information is better" sort of fellow. Then again this critic used very big words so you know he had an ego the size of Kansas.
Result: 11.0 million (My rank: #3, $.1m off)
5. Nim's Island
At this level of revenue no one could predict these correctly. Not even my father, Fred Oracle.
Result: 4.5 million (My rank: #7, $1.1m off)
6. Prom Night
Ha! Exactamundo! Why don't I get more credit for these exactas? We should do them in gold font or something. I need gimmicks to keep me motivated.
Result: 4.4 million (My rank: #6, $0m off)
7. 21
So I'm set to get the new Grand Theft Auto on Tuesday, the same day I screen Iron Man. I'm calling this day "heaven."
Result: 4.0 million (My rank: #8, $.9m off)
8. 88 Minutes
I've got this idea for a movie where Al Pacino wanders around like a senile old man. What's that? It's been done? Oh, never mind then.
Result: 3.6 million (My rank: #9, $.6m off)
I showed someone the "Lazy Sunday" digital short for the first time last week. I don't know how you could have missed that when it came out – it was everywhere, right? I think the new Narnia should use it in their commercials too. I'm a big fan. That's all for now.
Result: 2.4 million (My rank: #10, $.8m off)
10. Deception
Wow. That's a mauling, I have to salute them. Bad reviews, no marketing, terrible trailers – these guys really did it up right. But potential audiences weren't deceived. Heeeeyoooo!
Result: 2.2 million (My rank: #5, $2.8m off)
