Box-Office Oracle: Jan. 11 – Jan. 13, 2008
It is going to be a razor thin margin at the top. You heard it here first!
#1 movie predicted correctly: 8 Weeks in a Row
This week represents a major threat to the streak as multiple movies could take the crown. I'm taking Morgan and Jack because I think they'll get more family dollars. Pray for me.
Estimate: $14.6 million
2. First Sunday
It will make some dollars as it's a legitimately funny flick. But at only 2000 theaters I couldn't give it the weekend as it probably doesn't have enough awareness to overtake two known stars.
Estimate: $13.6 million
3. Juno
Give them credit – they've have marketed this perfectly. It gains theaters this weekend and I only see a 42% drop in the cards. It shouldn't have enough in the tank to nail first but you never know. As I said, it's a pretty harrowing weekend.
Estimate: $11.6 million
Both this and Legend benefit from no real competition being released on the action front. No, I'm not counting the dungeon movie. You shouldn't either.
Estimate: $10.5 million
5. I Am Legend
I do sort of wonder what a sequel would look like. Of course I also wonder what the actual story in the book would have looked like. Probably pretty cool.
Estimate: $8.4 million
It has been a little over five years since the last one came out – that one debuted at $6500 per theater. I penciled this veggie one in for the same number because, and this is key, I have no earthly idea who would see this. Ever.
Estimate: $7.8 million
It will take a slight beating now that some like minded kid's films are on board, but it has been a hell of a run, hasn't it? You've got to like the chances for a sequel, hopefully one where they team up with Garfield.
Estimate: $6.4 million
8. Atonement
It's getting another 400 theaters (leaving it just short of 1000) this weekend which will of course help. I wonder though, why not advertise it as "From the director of Pride and Prejudice" and throw it in 2000 theaters to start with? Were they that freaked out by mainstream acceptance? Or did they not have the budget? Curious.
Estimate: $6.2 million
They didn't screen it and no one has ever heard of it. Besides that things are going according to plan.
Estimate: $5.9 million
10. One Missed Call
This could narrowly edge out Charlie Wilson's War. Or it might not. Either way, I'm not going to be the one millionth pundit to overrate that particular film.
Estimate: $5.7 million
