Box-Office Oracle: Aug 3 – Aug 5
Guess what will take the top slot? Correct, you nailed it!
#1 movie predicted correctly: One week in a row
I've got it making more than either of the first two. However, the second edition just about doubled Bourne Identity's opening weekend, so if I'm off here it will be because I'm under the number. Anything above $60m would make Universal woozy with glee.
Estimate: $53.1 million
I see this having a strong follow-up weekend. They've got a nice marketing campaign going where they list all the critics who loved it – but the trick is they've embedded the theme into the movie clips. So, for instance, they show Homer reading the New York Times' glowing review of The Simpsons. Simple, yet clever, like most of the movie's marketing up to this point. Kwik-E-Mart anyone?
Estimate: $39.2 million
3. Underdog
Here is where it gets nasty. There are four new titles that will crack the top ten and none of them are stalwarts except for Bourne. So then, following that logic, this pick could end up loking kooky. Do people want to see a flying dog? He looks pretty cute doesn't he? All I'm asking for is third place here guys, we're in this together.
Estimate: $13.6 million
Since it didn't fall as much as I'd predicted last weekend I've got to be kinder and gentler towards it. I can't hold on to this ""Sandler got to fondle Biel" grudge forever I guess.
Estimate: $10.5 million
5. Hot Rod
Here's a bold pick pretty much based on meeting the guys who made the movie. How's that for honesty? But really, why wouldn't America want to see a goofball comedy this weekend?
Estimate: $10.1 million
She stands at $703m worldwide right now. The franchise as a whole is over $4b at this point. Man, I've got to quit this job and create a ten part fantasy series that will capture the kid's imaginations (mine will be ten parts because that's more than lame old seven).
Estimate: $9.4 million
7. Hairspray
The wife saw it. Said she loved it, gave it an "A" grade. This has been what everyone has said, consistently, across the board. I think Hairspray should have just used the fan's quotes in the marketing, they're way better than anything dopey critics could write.
Estimate: $9.1 million
That 43 percent on RottenTomatoes means this one will struggle to even make this number. I'm only putting it here because I like Zeta-Jones.
Estimate: $6.4 million
9. Bratz
I've heard this one has a loyal following of kiddies, but I've sure never met any of them. Where are they hiding? In the woods? This one should sink like a stone this weekend and forever more.
Estimate: $6.1 million
10. Transformers
It's the last weekend for the little adaptation that could and I'll be pleased to see it go.
Estimate: $5.6 million
