Box-Office Wrap-Up: 'Wimpy Kid' Tops 'Sucker Punch' for Box-Office Win

It might be a weak box-office, but there are some things to discuss

The top ten was down 6.8% from last year and about 23% from 2009 in yet another light box-office weekend. Does that owe to the NCAA tournament or is it once again because of a lack of interest in the films in theaters? I lean toward the latter, but that's just me…
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row
Reviews for this one were not that good, which is a bit shocking since all we're talking about is a kids film here, but some I read were actually quite vitriolic. However, there was enough audience interest for it to take the top spot by over a $5 million margin.

Looking over the user predictions from Thursday there was hardly a consensus, but many had Wimpy Kid at the top and Athar almost hit the prediction right on the button with a $24.5 million call.

Result: $24.4 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 and his prediction of $17.67 million was $6.73m off for a percentage error of 27.58%.
Sucker Punch, the film that had some commenting on my review saying it was supposed to be "fun" and that I just didn't catch on to that. In fact, I knew it was "supposed" to be fun, but I just don't see blinding visual effects, ear shattering noise and the fact young girls are being raped and abused while the film takes a video game break to be all that fun. That's just me though, everyone is entitled to an opinion and I actually enjoyed reading the conversations this one spurred on. That's why we're here right?

As for the box-office, I was far too generous yesterday, thinking those $8 million Friday receipts would result in about $22.5 million for the weekend. Seems word of mouth wasn't helping this flick. This result doesn't surprise Kid though, who came up with an on-the-nose $19 million prediction. Kudos to Bustray as well who was also quite close with an $18.7 million pick as many were all over the board on this one.

Question now is just how well will it hold up?

Result: $19 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 with $22.5 million, which is $3.5m off for a 18.42% error.
Forget the two films at the top, the biggest news of the weekend comes at #3 and #4 as Limitless dropped only 19.5% from last weekend and has now taken in $41 million in its first ten days. I'm curious, do you guys see Bradley Cooper as a potential box-office star going forward?
Result: $15.2 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $10.78 million, which is $4.42m off for a 29.08% error.
The Lincoln Lawyer held over even better than Limitless, dropping only 16.7% from last weekend, but the cume here is still only $28.9 million in its first ten days. Even though this film didn't knock my socks off, I wish it had done better because I would like to see more big screen courtroom dramas as opposed to the rash of them on primetime television.
Result: $11 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $7.52 million, which is $3.48m off for a 31.64% error.
We now have two $100+ million earners at the domestic box-office and Rango is currently at the top of the heap with $106.3 million. Just Go With It is the other one, giving Adam Sandler his twelfth $100+ million earner. The guy just prints money when it comes to silly comedies.
Result: $9.8 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $8.89 million, which is $0.91m off for a 9.29% error.
Battle: Los Angeles is now up to $72.5 million. I'm anxious to hear word of the sequel, Clean Up: Los Angeles. All those dead aliens have to be a massive bio-hazard.
Result: $7.6 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $6.68 million, which is $0.92m off for a 12.11% error.
7. Paul
I have still not seen this and it's growing more and more likely I will have to wait until DVD and Blu-ray to do so. It's only managed $24 million in its first ten days so I doubt it will be sitting in theaters for too long.
Result: $7.5 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $6.78 million, which is $0.72m off for a 9.6% error.
Only $32 million so far on a reported $42 million budget. Looks like it takes more than just copying Twilight to actually earn Twilight dollars.
Result: $4.3 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $4.02 million, which is $0.28m off for a 6.51% error.
You wouldn't know it by looking at the box-office numbers, but at the moment the best movies 2011 has had to offer are all in theaters. You have The Adjustment Bureau, Rango, Win Win, Cedar Rapids, Jane Eyre and Certified Copy. How many of these have you seen?
Result: $4.2 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $2.97 million, which is $1.23m off for a 29.29% error.
This spot could go to Beastly whose estimate was $2.185, which is why I went three digits deep after the decimal. Not like it really matters.
Result: $2.186 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.22 million, which is $1.034m off for a 47.3% error.

Looking below number ten, Jane Eyre took in another $983,000 from 90 theaters and a $10,922 per theater average. The new release Miral (which I saw in Toronto and isn't all that great) was in only four theaters and took in $65,000. But the weekend's big per theater winner was Win Win in its second weekend where it took home $471,000 from 23 theaters and a $20,478 per theater average.

Next week sees and interesting group vying for the top spot including Hop, Insidious and Source Code. Another film hitting theaters is the Oscar Best Picture winner In a Better World, which I also saw in Toronto and loved. You can read my review of that one here.

Any of the new releases next week could be number one. Hop will probably take it, though Source Code could surprise.

Thank God that monstrosity of a film did not win the weekend.

I haven't seen Sucker Punch yet, but the premise actually sounds interesting. Brad, do you think it could have been a could film with a different director and/or script?

    • Anything could be anything with any director and/or script.

Yeah, I actually think Synder is an underrated talent of a director who has a lot of ambition than he's commonly given credit for… but Sucker Punch was a disaster. Its a case of Synder the writer letting down the director. Its so rushed, simplistic and just flat out stupid at times that its difficult to enjoy the eye candy involved. As far as word of mouth, I'm predicting that the legs on this movie makes Watchmen's theatre run look like Avatar's.

Sad to see Sucker Punch ending up second. I thought it was highly entertaining.

I think Sucker Punch could of had better success if it changed 3 things:
    1. Leave in the 18 min of cut footage and keep the R rating
    2. Wait two weeks to release the film after the tournament
    3. Change the marketing strategy (its not a "girl power" film, its disturbing and violent).

Sucker Punch is a flop because it was god awful. It fell 17% on saturday. Happy for Wimpy Kid 2. Good movie. Secound time that movie has casued on upset for # 1.

  9. Damn Sucker Punch is my fave film of the year so far and just $19 million on it's first week, things aren't looking too good for that movie at the BO. Battle: LA is also my fave flick of the year so far as well, both SP and this being my fave film of the year so far. I was hoping it would crack the $100 million mark in a few weeks but it looks unlikely. :(

Brad, you saw Miral and said it wasn't that great. That means you didn't really like it?? Critics didn't like it as well. I still want to see it, it just looked very interesting from the trailers and of course Freida Pinto. What was it not that great about the movie?? How was Freida Pinto in it?

    • Brad Brevet (Post Author)

Miral is just sort of a nothing film. Nah, I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it either. After seeing it at Toronto I couldn't even find the need or interest in reviewing it. Pinto was fine, but it's not a noteworthy performance by any means.

Can't see Sucker Punch holding very well against next week's new releases at all. Based on it's Fri-Sun drops on it's first weekend alone.

Based upon the distinct 'love it/hate it' vibe the film seems to be generating I doubt I'll see it for a while since it never truly appealed to me anyway, so I won't be in a position to tell how I found it for some time.

I'd probably pick Hop for the top spot next weekend with a $30/$40 million haul and maybe around $20 million for Source Code. Although I have no idea what the budget for Source Code is at this point. I don't know what to call on Insidious just now but maybe somewhere in the teens.

  11. im sad that sucker punch didnt win.im not happy that wimpy kid 2 won. i hate wimpy kid 2 and it sucks

Wow, very impressive holds for The Lincoln Lawyer and Limitless. I think I've come back around on The Lincoln Lawyer; I'll probably see it next weekend, since none of the new releases appeal to me. Hop should take it with a number somewhere in the $30 million range. Probably about $20 million for Source Code and I don't know what to think about Insidious just yet.

I thought Sucker Punch played down the "abuse and rape" and was not as sexual as the pictures posted. The action parts made up for the very week story, I thought. They could have knocked out another 10-20 minutes.

And Abby Cornish makes a good action hero, she had the body for it.

  14. Vince (Not Vance)

Good for Fox, now they can pop out at least 2 more of these Wimpy Kid films (considering there are 5) and as long as they keep the budgets low, they'll have a nice little moneymaking franchise.

Sucker Punch…well, I stayed away, and so did everyone else. I'll be surprised if this hits Kick-Ass numbers (and that film didn't have great WOM either, though it had much better reviews).

Good on Limitless & Lincoln Lawyer for holding so well.

I saw Insidious at an advanced screening. While it had it's few flaws and delved into unrealistic categories at points, the film makes you jump like it's your job. And it really sits on your mind. At points it's downright terrifying. Let's just say that there were grown men in the back screaming more than the women they were with. It really shakes you and the music is perfectly horrifying in itself. It almost plays like a campy horror flick in parts such as the title and ending screens which I loved. If your brave enough, then go.

I'm not surprised Sucker Punch did so poorly, I suspected word of mouth would hurt it after I saw it opening night. My friends and I are basically the target audience (teenage males) and we were all talking about how it was boring. The rest of the audience seemed just as bored- no one reacted to anything during the film.

As for next week, I think Hop will be number one and Source Code will do well too. I don't know about Insidious though, even though that's what I plan on seeing next weekend.

"You have The Adjustment Bureau, Rango, Win Win, Cedar Rapids, Jane Eyre and Certified Copy. How many of these have you seen?"
Two, actually. I just saw Win Win and Certified Copy (not in theaters, but at home On Demand instead) this weekend, and I'll probably see Jane Eyre next weekend. Next weekend has so many good ones, though! Source Code, Insidious, and Jane Eyre all coming to theaters near me in the same weekend…

    There's a Wimpy Kid 2?

  19. The Jackal

@Laremy Legel: I could care less if you enjoyed Sucker Punch or not (I for one thought it was a pretty good film – nothing really memorable – just a bunch of cool visuals strung together by a thin plot); however, give Zach Snyder a break – this film wasn't about "young girls being raped."

Here are the ages of the principle actresses:

    Vanessa Hudgens: 21
    Emily Browning: 22
    Ms. Malone: 26
    Ms. Chung: 27
    Ms. Cornish: 28

As a 27-year old lawstudent, these "WOMEN" are all in my acceptable dating range – so, let's not call the women I go on dates with "young girls" shall we. Thanks

    Thems the facts

Hop at the top with $30M!

    Source Code for $20M!

    Limitless will probably get hurt…,

  21. ryan

Ofcourse Cooper is big, and im not talking jason patrick (speed 2?) or ed burns. I see sucker punch falling fast. Wimpy was an easy prediction for the top spot. Relativity or whatever the company is called is gonna do great off this movie. Adjustment should shoot past its mark with us, and overseas will do the rest since they love Damon (Hereafter, green zone). Unlike the Wolfman , REd hood should push out a profit with overseas easily. MAstermind, Rango….whats going on with this companies cartoons? Lincoln lawyer is doing great, and Paul is at about 50 million world wide now so its doing great for one of these movies as well. Sadly I do see Hop winning next weekend, and after 100 commercials I finally saw a part that looks funny in this movie (chicken eating worms, rabbit making wretching sounds). Yeah that was it…sort of.
