Box-Office Wrap-Up: Sep. 10 – Sep. 12, 2010
COMMENTS
Resident Evil dominates the slowest weekend in over two years.
2009 saw exactly zero weekends this bad, as I mentioned on Thursday the last sub $70m weekend was the opening weekend of September 2008. Still, we owe it to posterity to break this one down, if only for the archives.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 1 Weeks In A Row
| I had it diminishing ten percent but it actually was up almost twenty percent. Which means it was actually flat in terms of actual tickets sold, but the 3-D premium allowed them to make some extra cash. Did anyone see this? Could there be a sequel in the works? My one concern here is the listed $60m production budget. These Resident Evil films tend to be massively frontloaded. The bright side is they also tend to bank internationally. So I suppose the news is mostly positive for Milla and the gang. Result: $27.7 million My rank: I picked it to finish #1 and my prediction of $21.46 million was $6.24m off for a percentage error of 22.53%. | |
2. Takers
0.15 percent is not much to be off. I'm a bit of a Takers expert.
Result: $6.1 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #3 with $6.091 million, which is $0.0089999999999995m off for a 0.15% error.
My rank: I picked it to finish #3 with $6.091 million, which is $0.0089999999999995m off for a 0.15% error.
3. The American
Oh, I almost forgot, John-PT gets the victory for his $28.2m call on Resident Evil: Afterlife. As for The American, it fell 55 percent, which proves you can only get away with action-packed trailers for a drama on opening weekend.
Result: $5.8 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #2 with $6.747 million, which is $0.947m off for a 16.33% error.

4. Machete
A 63 percent drop, which was more than I thought but not insane. Fans of this sort of film tend to go opening weekend.
Result: $4.2 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #4 with $5.153 million, which is $0.953m off for a 22.69% error.

About what we thought it was. A shame, given it made me laugh.
Result: $3.8 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #6 with $3.855 million, which is $0.055m off for a 1.45% error.
My rank: I picked it to finish #6 with $3.855 million, which is $0.055m off for a 1.45% error.
That $100m budget still looms. They should have paid everyone involved less.
Result: $3.6 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #8 with $3.435 million, which is $0.165m off for a 4.58% error.
My rank: I picked it to finish #8 with $3.435 million, which is $0.165m off for a 4.58% error.
The budget was nothing, and it's made almost $40m. A win.
Result: $3.4 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #9 with $3.139 million, which is $0.261m off for a 7.68% error.

Did well internationally so they are probably set.
Result: $3.2 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #5 with $4.467 million, which is $1.267m off for a 39.59% error.

9. Inception
$700m for Inception! Drinks all around!
Result: $3 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #7 with $3.822 million, which is $0.822m off for a 27.4% error.
My rank: I picked it to finish #7 with $3.822 million, which is $0.822m off for a 27.4% error.
10. Eat Pray Love
I was thinking about Franco on Thursday's riddle, but y'all are dead on about Bardem. He could make some noise this Oscar season too.
Result: $2.9 million
My rank: I picked it to finish #10 with $3.093 million, which is $0.193m off for a 6.66% error.

And so a very slow box office weekend closes. Did you venture outside your house? I know I didn't. But I'm really looking forward to next weekend, four wide releases to get our fall season started right.

I'm kind of surprised that Flipped flopped. It was a slow weekend with one new release and fading summer films. How did it not do well?
Cause it was in 442 theaters and had no promotion?
Seriously. If I hadn't seen a trailer for it at my local art house theater I would have had no knowledge of its existence.
@Nick: It still should have hit the top 20. WB screwed it big time.
Yes, I saw Resident Evil and it was god-awful. That isn't taking God's name in vein, he hated it too.
And yes, it ends with a hint at the sequel. Actually, it all but explicitly states "Get ready for Resident Evil 5."
It was lame. Hated it.
Dangit, you just gave away the ending, I'm not going to see it now. :)
Ummm, god is a she….
totally agree, another unecessary sequel, in the annoyance that has become 3-D. why did people become obsessed with it? it's not that cool
I was disappointed with how Resident Evil ended. They could not have more explicitly stated that a fifth movie was planned. It ended in a cliff hanger, which you really only saw if you stayed for the thirty seconds of the credits. I find it funny the Paul W. S. Anderson stated that there were no plans for a fifth because he "only takes it one movie at a time", yet he ends this one in such a way that he may as well had the movie end with a "To Be Continued".
It seems it doesn't matter how crappy the movie, just put Resident Evil above the title and people show up! When the international numbers roll in I'm guessing this will be yet another check in Screen Gems column for the year so far.
$46m from foreign markets, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That makes, what, $73m-ish in 3 days? Not too shabby, regardless of the film's actual quality.
I love football too much to have left on "Monster Saturday" and opening Sunday for my Texans! But I will be out this week to catch up on some movies.
People who thought Resident Evil Afterlife sucked have problems. That is how you make a action movie and or a zombie movie, not that boring crap like 28 days.
But I suppose "art" is what is good, so RE can never win. Obviously though most people are irrelevant as it will make money.
People complaining about the "sequel announcement" are ridicoulous. Like the franchise was ready to end yet…not!
It also made most action movies and the other RE's look like total garbage.
Whoa dude, did you just say "boring crap" and "28 Days" (as in "Later" not as in the Sandra Bullock movie) in the same sentence? That can't be, because I'll say (and I'm sure that just about everyone else will agree with me here) that 28 Days Later is one of, if not the best, most chilling, haunting and tense zombie/infected people movies ever made. It's smart , action packed and legitimately scary. Don't get me wrong, the Resident Evil flicks are guilty pleasures of mine, but in no way are they "good" movies, and they certainly can't compare to 28 Days Later (or even 28 Weeks Later).
Just my two cents, however.
I really have nothing to say about this weekend, and I'm going on vacation this week so I won't be around to predict next weekend, which could be a doozy at the top. Easy A is probably the best bet to win, but Devil could do well in spite of Shyamalan's name being on it, because he isn't directing it. Or his name could very well cause it to tank. The Town is probably a long shot to win but I don't think it can be ruled out completely.
Don't forget Alpha & Omega. Yes, it looks like a terrible, cliched talking animal CGI animated movie with unnecessary 3D, but remember that there hasn't been a big family movie in weeks, with Nanny Mcphee Returns the last entry (and that film flopped hard). Every film in the top 10 is either PG-13 or R rated and I've been talking to parents who have been complaining that there's nothing to take their kids too. Alpha & Omega will fit that bill nicely, even though it won't break out.
The resident evil series should end with the next installment regardless of how many versions of the game come out, the story is getting repetitive and even when milla's character is powered down you would'nt notice it with her moves, finish it with the next one or it's going the alien/predator/terminator route.
next friday the town will win at box office and easy a will bomb
next weekend devil will win at box office
Easy A – 27.4M
Devil – 19.4M
The Town – 16.4M
Alpha and Omega – 7.7M
1. The Town – Looks mainstream and solid
2. Devil – Could win if it beats The Town for the date night crowd which is possible, or if enough teens go to see it
3. RE43D
4. Easy A – Should do well for a 1/2 quadrant movie
5. Alpha & Omega – The story is more geared to teens rather than it's supposed target audience, plus the title will make parents tell their kids to do their homework instead.
next weekend
1.devil
2.resident evil 3d
3.the town
4.alpha and omega
5.easy a
6.machete
