Hangover repeats, a rare occurrence in 2009.
The Hangover got me again, becoming only the third film this year to take multiple box-office weekends. For the record, the other two were Paul Blart and Madea Goes to Jail.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
1. The Hangover
Alert commenter Gophers Attack! had it dialed in, he called it in first place at $32.8m. It only fell 25.7% from last weekend… which is astonishing. It's almost as if people will heartily support good movies. Weird. Oh, and did you know Ed Helms actually had a crown removed for the role as Stu? Seriously, read all about it right here.
Result: 33.0 million (My rank: #2, $6.0m off)
2. Up
I had the dollars fine, I just expected Hangover to fall another 15%. Up will pass Monsters vs. Aliens domestically this weekend, call it revenge for Kung Fu Panda outearning Wall-E worldwide last summer.
Result: 30.5 million (My rank: #1, $.3m off)
My guess is mixed word of mouth is going to hurt it next weekend, but one of our most regular box-office comment predictors Chuck Bartowski nailed the top three along with JAB, Gophers Attack! and Bustray. Congrats guys.
Result: 25.0 million (My rank: #2, $2.7m off)
This one is still going to need to do some real work on DVD to make a buck. It will clear $300m, easily, but the budget was a heavy $150m.
Result: 9.6 million (My rank: #4, $.9m off)
Doomed. I hope Universal is using Land of the Lost as a tax write off, otherwise heads are going to roll.

6. Imagine That
Back on track. I'm pleased that I'm now an Eddie Murhpy box-office expert. Hopefully they'll send me a trophy or something.
Result: 5.7 million (My rank: #6, $1.3m off)
7. Star Trek
Can Up make another $45m to pass it? It's pretty much guaranteed a slot in the top ten of the year with $232m domestically. That number would have been good for fifth place in 2008.
Result: 5.6 million (My rank: #7, $0.6m off)
Only $388m more to go, and y'all are profitable! Keep plugging away!

$35m total, but without much hope for foreign dollars.

Next week brings us the typical Proposal and the possibly funny Year One. No way The Hangover will take a third straight weekend, right?

I'm am so glad The Hangover is doing well. I said right after I saw it that if The Hangover makes over $145 million I will forgive America for making Paul Blart a hit. Well, it is finally time to heal. Also glad to see Up continue to do so well. It seems that quality is starting to win out over gimmicks and big stars. Let's see how long that will last.
Next week is a head scratcher for sure. I think The Hangover and Up are going to have some amazing holdovers. And I'm thinking that The Proposal, the first romantic comedy (My Life in Ruins didn't go too wide) since Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, it has a shot at outdoing Year One, a movie with a big star in prehistoric times with an okay but not laugh out loud funny trailer. Hmmm, if it had a dinosaur I would be thinking back to Land of the Lost. So, I'm thinking next week will go like this:
1. The Proposal – $25 million
2. The Hangover – $23 million
3. Up – $21 million
4. Year One – $18 million
5. The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 – $13 million
I want Year One to succeed so badly, because it looks frickin hilarious, but I can't see it making past $30 million when it's supposedly opening at less than 3,00 locations. Early weekend predics:
1. Year One- $27.5 million
2. The Proposal- $26.0
3. Up- $24.6 million
4. The Hangover- $21.1 million
5. The Taking of Pelham 123- $13.2 million
next week is really tough, I think Year One is going to split the Hangover's audience, and the girls are gonna come out in droves for the Proposal, the first real date movie in a couple of weeks and it's trailer has been shown before a ton of this years bigger movies. I think the word of mouth for Away We Go will be good enough for it to break into the top ten if it's expanding enough. There's gonna be a bunch of movies just making decent money this weekend. Hey Laremy — WALL*E actually outearned Kung Fu Panda domestically last year; 223.8 million to 215.4 million. Kung Fu Panda, however, had the higher foreign gross.

Wow, "good buzz" remains the story so far this summer. Great holds for both Hangover and UP, and I can't be any more happier for both. Hangover is on pace to go 200-215mil, and UP is on pace to hit 280-300mil which is shocking since more than a few industry analysts predicted it to be a tough sell and even went as far saying it will be Pixar's lowest performer B.O.-wise.
Next week is a tough one. UP and Hangover will both have strong holds again, and you have 2 new films in Year One and The Proposal. I expect all 4 of them to finish north of 20million.
I really can't say anything about next weekend. Gotta expect till Thursday when reviews start coming out because if Year One find some good word of mouth it could win but if not i'm expecting Hangover to take the top slot again.

Proposal should get next weekend- the rom-com audience has had nothing for a while, and the fact that it's supposed to actually be funny could help too. Hangover and Up will continue to have sensational holds. Year One is a complete wild card at this point- the advertising looks terrible, but I have a feeling it could actually be a decent movie.

I also have the feeling that Up was really underestimated on Sunday. A 34% drop just doesn't feel right, even with Proposal sneaks the night before.
@Gophers Attack!: Couldn't agree more… I'm bamboozled by that too. It's only dropped 20-25% in the past.
The Proposal is the first major rom-com in a while, Year One will be going up against the Hangover and Land of the Lost and really looks like one of those bad spoof movies so I wouldn't put it down for too much. Call my cynical but Jack Black isn't much of a draw anymore.

2+3 will be another darn photo finish at about 20 mill between Hangover and up again, the pair have became a major face off. I want to say Up this time but if the Oracle has taught me anything its not to dis The Hangover.
4. Year One, 15 mill
5. Pelham will take about 10-15 mill and fade into the realms of who cares.
yeah, jack black isn't much of a draw anymore, but jack black and michael cera? I'm not saying, I'm just saying…
Totally agree with JAB Will Ferrel is a falling star while Michael Cera is a rising one. And Jack Black can only add a couple million to its take. And let's not forget that the guy directing this movie also worked on Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, National Lampoon's Animal House, and many other comedic masterpieces. So fans of those movies will definitely be checking this one out.
