The top ten barely cracks $70 million total
Thanks to Gitesh Pandya of Box-Office Guru's Twitter post I didn't even have to look this up, but the top twenty at the box-office this weekend is down big from previous years. Down 23% from 2010, 29% from 2009 and 30% versus 2008. The top ten made just over $70 million. So, please understand if I don't spend much time analyzing the results.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row
| Here it is, now you can expect a week's worth of the #1 movie in the nation TV spots for a film that everyone, including SNL is making fun of. It was made on a budget of $16 million and almost matched that number this weekend. As far as predictions go Laremy was damn near spot as was Ian with a $15. 2 million. Nice work. Result: $15.6 million Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $15.12 million was $0.48m off for a percentage error of 3.08%. | |
2. Sanctum
In second is the awful Sanctum. I wonder how many people came out of this just as upset as I did. On the prediction side of things only therapycase1279 took a number below double digits so according to "Price is Right" rules he would win with his $7 million prediction, but DamienB was the closest with an $11.4 million guess.
Result: $9.2 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $11.88 million, which is $2.68m off for a 29.13% error.

This weekend I was having dinner with some friends and all four girls at the table asked me why they don't make movies like they used to as they reminisced on old rom-coms they loved. I thought it was an interesting conversation since two of them had seen No Strings Attached and liked it, but none of them would consider it great, just a good time waster.
Result: $8.4 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $8.58 million, which is $0.18m off for a 2.14% error.

Seems people are doing their best to catch the presumed Best Picture winner before the Oscars. Laremy almost hit this one on the head, but in his effort to be extremely precise he should have rounded up a notch.
Result: $8.3 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $8.29 million, which is $0.01m off for a 0.12% error.

It is now over $87 million and yet it has a loooooong way to go to make up for that $120 million budget. I don't even think DVD and Blu-ray sales will put this one in the black.
Result: $6.1 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $6.84 million, which is $0.74m off for a 12.13% error.

6. The Rite
A 62% drop from opening weekend to the next is not a good sign.
Result: $5.5 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $7.1 million, which is $1.6m off for a 29.09% error.

7. The Mechanic
And a 53% dip isn't too impressive either. However, Laremy nearly nailed this one.
Result: $5.3 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.12 million, which is $0.18m off for a 3.4% error.

8. True Grit
I got a press release for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Clint Eastwood's The Outlaw Josey Wales and on it there was a graphic with a horse drawn wagon with a fiery background saying, "Westerns are hot!" I guess one successful western means the whole genre is on fire, but I am certainly celebrating True Grit topping $155 million this weekend. Who would've ever guessed?
Result: $4.7 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $5.17 million, which is $0.47m off for a 10% error.

9. The Dilemma
Leave it to the box-office top ten to remind me this movie exists.
Result: $3.44 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $3.78 million, which is $0.34m off for a 9.88% error.

10. Black Swan
Black Swan will crack the $100 million mark by the end of next weekend. Can you believe a film about a psycho ballerina and a western were both able to top $100 million?
Result: $3.4 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.95 million, which is $0.55m off for a 16.18% error.

Next weekend is packed with Cedar Rapids in a limited release, The Eagle, Gnomeo and Juliet, Just Go With It and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Care to make a wager on which one will top the box-office? 3D Biebs? The Sandler flick? The animated 3D feature? The Roman epic with C-Tates?
Make your guesses and be prepared for today's Super Bowl. Who yah got?

Just Go With It will top next weekend. And then I Am Number Four will take the weekend after that
1. Just Go With It- 36 mil
2. Justin Bieber- 28 mil
3. The Eagle- 20 mil
4. Gnomeo and Juliet- 17 mil
Delighted that in a short time Black Swan will be able to crack $100 million. I'm hoping that The King's Speech has enough momentum left to do the same since (I'm not 100% sure but I think it will) it appears that The Fighter won't, even though it's gross is pretty solid as well given it's budget.
Excellent result for True Grit though. It opens here in a few weeks and hope to catch it then. I'm wondering if it will be able to overtake Tron: Legacy in the domestic gross stakes? I know it won't globally though.
Next weekend it's probably a fight between Beiber-Fever and Sandler's effort. Boy, I'm glad I don't have to choose between them but can simply ignore them both completely. I'm tempted to give Beiber the edge in terms of opening weekend but Sandler to gross more in the long run.
I think The Eagle will open low and disappear fast. It's likely no Gladiator and it's already been delayed by about a year. Not a good omen that last part.
Just Go With It does not seem as bad as Grown Ups anyway. And give Bieber credit, the dude has been everywhere promoting this movie. At least we are getting new movies at the muti-plex.
I saw The King's Speech this weekend, and I must say, the Academy should give Firth the Oscar right now.
My early predictions for next week:
1. Just Go With It. $38.2 million
2. Justin Beiber. $24.3 million
3. Gnomeo and Juliet. $18.5 million
4. The Eagle. $9.2 million
5. No Strings Attached. $6.2 million
6. The King's Speech. $5.9 million
7. The Roommate. $5.2 million
8. Sanctum. $4.5 million
9. The Green Hornet. $4.3 million
10. The Mechanic. $3.5 million
Yeah, outstanding numbers for True Grit, Black Swan, and The King's Speech as well, which will easily coast past $100 million by the time the Oscars come around. Black Swan is honestly the most impressive of the bunch to me in terms of how much it's made relative to the type of film it is. True Grit won't have enough steam to pass Dances With Wolves, but it's solidly the #2 domestic western ever. I wonder if we'll see a surge of westerns over the next few years now?
Interesting showdown next weekend between Sandler and Biebs. Just Go With It should win, but I wouldn't expect it to reach the level of Grown Ups. Never Say Never won't come close to the record PTAs of the Miley concert film, but might put up bigger numbers overall, simply on the strength of playing in 2,000 more theatres. Gnomeo and The Eagle should both do pretty poorly.
Leighton Meester is incredibly gorgeous. She has now begun her ascension to the A-list with The Roommate being No. 1. It would be good if she gets a role in the new Superman, Avengers or Star Trek movies.
im a girl. dont lik 2 use my real name online tho i am aware all the fake name stuff bugs you. sorry.
last i checked hornet is at 140 million worldwide… not bad the dvd sales should crack it even.
