Grab yourself some Peeps and a chocolate bunny

No major surprises in what amounts to a rather uninteresting box-office weekend, at least in my opinion. But let's break it down and see if anything happened of any consequence.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 1 Weeks In A Row
I guess if you really wanted to get excited about anything it would be Universal's Hop greatly over-performing. The film pulled in $10 million more than Laremy predicted and I'd say he was on the high side of most box-office prognosticators.

Hop is now the fifth largest April opening ever, $2 million behind 2006's Scary Movie 4 and $2 million ahead of The Scorpion King.

Of course, when it comes to predictions we can't forget about our users where a few of you went $30+ million and Colin was the closest with a $35 million prediction. Go buy yourself some Peeps good sir.

Result: $38.1 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $28.61 million was $9.49m off for a percentage error of 24.91%.
Source Code's opening was less than the $20 million Laremy predicted, but I don't think any of us are all that surprised. I know John PT isn't, with his $15.4 million prediction just edging out Bustray's $15.5 million.
Result: $15 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $20.73 million, which is $5.73m off for a 38.2% error.
FilmDistrict has to be happy with its first release as Insidious performed well and based on the film's ending and the fact it comes from the folks that spawned seven Saw films and now three Paranormal Activity films. Yeah, considering the film has a reported budget of $1.5 million and was an acquisition you can pretty much put Insidious 2 on your 2012 calendar.
Result: $13.4 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $13.24 million, which is $0.16m off for a 1.19% error.
A 57% drop for the holdover and Laremy damn near nailed it. Wimpy Kid 2 is now up to $38 million. Is there a third Wimpy Kid book for them to mine?
Result: $10.2 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $10.46 million, which is $0.26m off for a 2.55% error.
I was told this weekend by a friend that while they were watching this film all they could think of was that it was a film meant for Matthew McConaughey, but since he was making The Lincoln Lawyer they went with the next best thing. I have no idea if the two films shot at the same time, but do you see Bradley Cooper as the next Matt McC? If so, is that a good thing for Cooper?
Result: $9.4 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $10.66 million, which is $1.26m off for a 13.4% error.
Speaking of The Lincoln Lawyer, both it and Limitless continue to hold on strong, dropping 34% and 37% respectively. Perhaps there's something to the McConaughey/Cooper comparison.
Result: $7 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $6.32 million, which is $0.68m off for a 9.71% error.
Laremy and I have considered creating badges for the films in the Box-Office Wrap-Up, which would mean Sucker Punch would get the "Drop of the Week" badge as it fell 68% from last weekend's second place perch for a $29 million cume. I've pretty much beat this film to death so I will just let the numbers do the talking now.
Result: $6 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $7.05 million, which is $1.05m off for a 17.5% error.
Rango continues to stick around and is now up to $113.7 million, which is a number that sounds great only because 2011 has been filled with under-performers. But given the film's $135 million reported budget it's not as great as it seems.
Result: $4.5 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $5.3 million, which is $0.8m off for a 17.78% error.
9. Paul
I can't bring myself to muster up the interest to go see this one. Anyone out there see it and see any reason why I shouldn't just wait for it on Blu-ray?
Result: $4.3 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.91 million, which is $0.39m off for a 9.07% error.
Up to $78 million and I'm sure we'll be hearing about the DVD/Blu-ray release any day.
Result: $3.5 million
Laremy's rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $3.3 million, which is $0.2m off for a 5.71% error.

Hop was the per theater champ with $10,650 per, but and Oscar's Best Foreign Language winner, In a Better World was second in that category, opening in 4 theaters and taking in $35,400 for a $8,850 average.

In its third weekend, Win Win took hom $1.1 million and the PG-13 version of The King's Speech mustered up $1.1 million from 1,007 theaters.

David Schwimmer's Trust took home $60,000 from 28 theaters and IFC's Super took home $52,800 from 11 theaters.

Anyone care to offer up early thoughts on next week's releases? Will it be Arthur or Your Highness at number one? Or will Hop repeat? Either way, chances look good for Russell Brand to star in the #1 film in the U.S. two weeks straight… and everyone says he's just for Brits.

Dear god, 38 million!? I wouldn't see that movie if you paid me!
I've yet to see insidious or Source Code though I heard good word of mouth on both and thought about getting off my couch this weekend but that Law & Order SVU marathon proved to be too tempting.

Went with the kids, wanted to hate it, and I even left the theater to get more popcorn and an extra long bathroom break. Sadly though, it was better than the chipmunks, and if you have kids it was pretty good. Don't see it if you have no reason to though. OR maybe it was just that the last movies I saw with the kids were, yogi bear (alright), alpha and omega(dreadful), …well actually that was it. Megamind was good for a kids movie, Narnia, Despicable, Harry potter, etc were all good as well.

    Hop will repeat.

    Arthur and YH around 15M

Hanna and Soul Surfer around 5M

    • $5m for Hanna? No. Just no.

I agree. It's not going to bomb that much. Nor will Soul Surfer.

Why not? They are not mainstream. I barely know what SS is. Hanna was not made for a big audience. I really can't see any of them passing the 7M line.

I agree with John, actually. Hanna has gotten the occasional TV ad, but I barely know what that film's about except for "little girl has a bow & arrow, shoots stuff". If Sucker Punch bombed, what makes you think Hanna will do well?

Soul Surfer looks more like a surfing movie (which always bomb) than an inspirational sports drama (which have a much better track record on film). I won't be surprised if Soul Surfer becomes "The Express" (remember that film?) of 2011.

@Vince: Hanna and Sucker Punch are two completely different films. I did not get an SP-vibe from watching the Hanna trailer and I wouldn't expect others to.

Soul Surfer IS an inspirational sports film (judging from the storyline), from the poster to the trailer and the advertising. The word of mouth will make that clear. I think it will do well, but its expected theater count (along with Hanna's) needs to go up.

Neither will do gangbusters, but they both have very high chances of hitting double digits next weekend.

        Big weekend next week.

        Hop will repeat for $28M
        Arthur for $15M
        Your Highness gets $13M
Hanna gets $10M due to low buzz (even if it's at 100% on RT so far)
        Soul Surfer $6.8M

      • John-PT

Soul Surfer is tracking at middle to high singles digits. Hanna is at barely double digits. They were not made for a big audience.

"Paul" is worth the ticket! Was amused through out the movie and had some great laughs. The parodies in the moive are the best!

  4. Hop is like…. Desci****ble me!
so, I think Hopcan be break out movie of the year!
    What do you think..Brad?

  5. Steve J

Insidious had 1.5M budget with that cast? But let's give some credit, both Insidious and Hop have had solid reviews, for kid's and horror movies, that's pretty good.

  6. You won't lose anything if you watch Paul on blu-ray, just make sure you watch it. Personally I had a lot of fun with it.

  7. walleraround

Definitely wait to see Paul. This movie underperformed greatly. I love Pegg/Frost combo and I walked out very disappointed after watching this one. Plus Seth Rogen's laugh is still the most obnoxious thing God ever made.

  8. VMarsFTW

That's great for Insidious. I thought it was a lot of fun and very scary.
Next weekend I see Hop repeating with all four of the new releases underperforming. I'm excited to see Hanna, but I don't think it's going to do well at the box office.

    • ryan

I think mccanughay whatever) would have done well in limitless as well, as for your prediction I think hop will only fall a little bit and win as well, Easter isn't here yet, its a decent animated film compared to Mars needs moms (whole family oriented is probably closer to what I am trying to say) and I think the word of mouth will be big because it was fun. Who under 25-30 really knows about Arthur the originals ore even who dudley moore is for that matter, the over wieght guy in highness has alot of bombs, Soul surfer looks like it should be a direct to dvd movie, and Hanna which could have some potential will not be given the chance.

  9. Winchester

I'd hope for Cooper's sake he's not the next M Mc…..but that's only because I find M Mc to be an utterly charmless and bordering on sleazy screen persona and I've never been able to shake that off since he started out.

  10. m1

    1.Hop-$20
    2.Arthur-$18
    3.Source Code-$12
    4.Soul Surfer-$13
    5.Your Highness-$13
    6.Hanna-$11
    7.Insidious-$7
    8.Limitless-$6
    9.The Lincoln Lawyer-$5
    10.Rango-$3

Feel free to laugh at my predictions. I did the best I could in 10 minutes.

    • ryan

I want to say 24 million for Hop, Arthur I like M1s pred. Source code I want to say 9 million, Soul surfer 6 or less, your highness looks about right at M1s 13 mill. Hanna maybe 8-10 mill. and worldwide Narnia on a 155 mill budget should pass 410 million compared to caspians over 220 million budget and a 419 million worldwide total.

  11. Liathach

Why is Arthur going up against Your Highness? Aren't they going after much the same market?

    • Steve J

Four movies with 2,000+ screens next weekend. Everyone knows about "Arthur" and "Your Hignness", but "Soul Surfer" and especially "Hanna" might be tough sells.

Posted On April 3rd, 2011 at 12:54 pm in reply to Liathach.
    • Vince (Not Vance)

One's PG-13 and looks terrible (And is a kinda-sorta romantic comedy) and one's R-rated and looks terrible (and is a kinda-sorta fantasy flick). I hope both bomb and I'm 99.99999999% sure that Hop will repeat next weekend, easily.

Which means that I can finally get out to the movies next weekend and catch Source Code and the other films I've been missing out on lately.

    EW.com added…

"In limited release, the action comedy Cat Run deserves a special mention for opening to $30,000 from 103 locations, for an abysmal per-theater average of $291. Assuming an $8 ticket price and five showtimes per day, an average of 2.4 moviegoers attended each screening of the film."

  13. Ian

Regarding, Bradley Cooper and Matt McC…I think they could be similar, but it depends on what career path Cooper goes down. One disadvantage McC has is that I've never seen him completely disappear into a character. That's due to the accent more than anything; he just has a completely distinct accent and I've never seen a him even try to mask it in a film. That's not to say he's a bad actor because of that; not everyone has to be a chameleon like Daniel Day-Lewis and I thought McC gave an absolutely terrific performance in The Lincoln Lawyer. But I think Cooper might have a better shot at being more of a character actor. Of course again it's really too early to say for sure because it seems that Cooper has really only become more in demand since The Hangover.

Back to box office, next weekend Hop probably repeats with something in the low to mid $20 million range. Your Highness won't tap into the Pineapple Express audience and thus will probably make $15 million or less (maybe even under $10 million). Arthur has the best chance at unseating Hop but I don't know if it can hit that $25 million it'd need to do it. I hope it does, because I'd hate for Hop of all films to be the first of 2011 to repeat.

  14. Shera

my kids and I saw Hop this weekend. What a horrible film. Completely charmless and utter trash. I would not recommend this to anyone. Family films have been completely horrible this year.

  15. Ben

' Either way, chances look good for Russell Brand to star in the #1 film in the U.S. two weeks straight… and everyone says he's just for Brits.'

Who says he's just for brits?

    • Brad Brevet (Post Author)

I see that a lot of places. Esquire even recently had a "Will you be enjoying Russell Brand this month?" quiz in their April issue where the first question was "You are:" a) American (-10) b) British (+10) c) Other (-10)

Posted On April 3rd, 2011 at 1:13 pm in reply to Ben.
  16. maja

I completely agree with the Bradley Cooper and Matthew McC comparisons. But to be honest I have my doubts whether Bradley Cooper will even be as successful as McC. I can see him and Zach Galifianakis disappearing in the next 2-3 years since neither of them appear to be able to play anything except themselves.

  17. Casper

What abou Scream 4 & Rio? Which movie do you think will come on top? I wish it will be Scream 4

  18. Ryan4

I see a solid Hop hold over. 35% bleed? That sounds good. It won't fall quickly until Easter passes. It is a GOOD family film. Adults expect WAY too much out of kids movies some times. Its not suppose to blow your mind and win oscars. Its suppose to be fun.
