Box-Office Oracle: Mar. 18 – Mar. 20, 2011

We're taking Limitless at the top, but it is a wide open race!
It will be a minor miracle if I get the top slot correct this weekend. The reason for my consternation? Just odd release choices from the studios. We've got a slew of masculine leaning films being released … right against March Madness. As such, any ability to hit the female demographic is going to pay off. Which leads me to …
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row
| Bradley Cooper has just enough crossover appeal to make Limitless my favorite to take the crown. It's also shorter than Lincoln Lawyer and features a Kanye West song in the trailer. Plus it's got Robert De Niro, there must be a couple hundred thousand people that buy a ticket based on Bobby D. alone, right? The film itself is flawed, but they are all flawed this weekend. There is no hero, no champion of quality to root for. I'd take a victory from Lincoln Lawyer or Limitless if I had my druthers, but I'm predicting just under one percent of America to buy a ticket to this one. Prediction: $18.24 million | |
Based on the weekday results word of mouth hasn't been great. Let's predict a 54 percent dip and move on.
Prediction: $16.36 million
3. Rango
In the enviable position of being the only real family choice on the board. But $120m worldwide on a production budget of $135m means there's still a lot of work to do.
Prediction: $15.37 million
Fandango was offering $6 tickets for The Lincoln Lawyer through Groupon. That's a smart move, because courtroom films tend to be a tough draw, though I'm personally a big fan.
Prediction: $14.4 million
5. Paul
Positive: They've already cleared $25m internationally. Negative: It's not on the level of Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead.
Prediction: $12.15 million
It only cost $42m to make … but Twilight cost $5m less and will outearn Red Riding Hood by a factor of ten.
Prediction: $7.42 million
Five of the top seven films slant toward the male demo, but at least this one has a love angle.
Prediction: $5.76 million
Someone out there said "Sure, we'll spend $150m to produce this." Astonishing.
Prediction: $3.8 million
10. Beastly
Hey, the other Alex Pettyfer film (I Am Number Four) is at $108m on a production budget of $60m. If I buy the DVD, can I get a sequel?
Prediction: $2.8 million
By my estimation there are five films that could win the weekend, so predict away dear commenters. I'll be checking in and Brad will be back on Sunday to wrap the weekend up.

We have Horrible Bosses to look forward too. He's supposedly the lead too.
If I Am Number Four gets a sequel, I will scream bloody murder. That was one of the most disappointing moviegoing experiences of my life.
I agree, was very slow, except at the end, a good action scene, but you had to watch the whole movie to get there….not a good movie at all
I am more interested how Sucker Punch does next weekend.
And I will go with Battle LA for the win with $18M

Limitless has it in my opinion. Battle: LA will stay up there since its the only real action movie out right now. I feel Paul is actually going to attract viewers, especially college students. Rango, will keep up good work. Lincoln Lawyer will benefit from the good reviews and Fandango. And whatevs to the rest.
Really? Not having followed much of anything more than commercials for all of these, I would have picked "Limitless" to come in last among the new releases. But again, I haven't heard any tracking nor any talk about any of these, except for "Paul", which gets a few chuckles from people I know.
Couldn't really guess the totals for any of 'em.
1. Limitless – 17.3
2. Rango – 15.5

The lincoln Lawyer-10 million
Tough weekend, and March Madness taking away dollars just makes it trickier.
1. Limitless, $19.3 million. I'm going with Laremy's theory of Bradley Cooper and DeNiro having a bit more crossover appeal. $7,000 PTA.
2. Paul, $16.8 million. This is only a $6,000 PTA. I can't go lower and I'm tempted to go higher. This just seems to have that dumb guy comedy appeal and while Pegg and Frost have somewhat of a cult following, this looks much more mainstream in its humor than Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. I'm knocking it down a bit due to March Madness, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this ends up winning with around $20 million…and I'll be kicking myself for not predicting that if it does.
3. Battle: Los Angeles, $16 million. I'm dinging this 55%; I figure it's pretty frontloaded and the Fri-Sat-Sun pattern last weekend bears that out.
4. Rango, $14.7 million.
5. The Lincoln Lawyer, $12 million. $5,000 PTA. I'll be seeing it this weekend.
6. Red Riding Hood, $7 million. 50% drop, moving on.
7. The Adjustment Bureau, $6.9 million.
8. Mars Needs Moms, $3.1 million.
9. Beastly, $3 million.
9. Hall Pass, $3 million.
I'm checking out The Lincoln Lawyer this weekend as I mentioned, and I'll also be seeing Cedar Rapids.
why are everybody predicting Paul will flop? It has a fanboy advantage
1.Paul
2.Limitless
3.Battle: Los Angeles
4.The Lincoln Lawyer
5.Rango
Hey everyone..,
1. Battle LA – 17 million
2. Limitless – 14.6 million

5. Paul – 11 million.
1. Paul – $20.79 million
2. Limitless – $16.38 million
3. Battle: Los Angeles – $16.18 million
4. Rango – $15.7 million
5. The Lincoln Lawyer – $14.0 million
6. The Adjustment Bureau – $7.06 million
7. Red Riding Hood – $6.39 million
8. Mars Needs Moms – $4.9 million
9. Beastly – $3.3 million
10. Hall Pass – $2.9 million
Well we did our part for hall pass, so now its up to the others to give it at least 20 million. As for Number 4, I am pretty confident that that movie will easily pass the 120 million mark world wide, and probably be between 55-56 million in the states in the end. Of course disney was mad with Old Dogs results and that made over 90 million worldwide, so who knows!
Adjustment did well , just not 60 million well. Like I said before i hope Disney did not take the whole budget on. Wasn't this another touchstone picture?
