Box-Office Oracle: Feb. 4 – Feb. 6, 2011
We're taking The Roommate over Sanctum and Steelers over the Packers, but We'd only bet on one of them!
| This one has more crossover appeal than Sanctum. It's rated PG-13, so they'll pull some teen dollars there. We can also expect the folks who skip the Super Bowl to choose The Roommate over Sanctum. These are the factors that will allow it to triumph over the 3-D dollars. Plus, let's all pour out some lager as we remember this was the weekend Dear John knocked Avatar of its perch after seven straight wins. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't note that poster, and the silliness contained within. "2,000 Colleges. 8 Million Roommates. Which One Will You Get?" Well, let's see here, I'll probably get a person who is the same sex as myself, the same age, and who is going to the same school. I imagine they speak pretty fair English too. And if I don't like them I'll just request to move. So we're talking about a couple thousand options, tops, but it's far more likely we'll become pals than anything else. C'mon Roommate poster designers. Do better. Prediction: $15.12 million | |
How say you? Do you like the producer pull of James Cameron with Sanctum? Will the top twelve even top $80m? Any Super Bowl calls? I like Pittsburgh, but I sure wouldn't bet either way on it. Total coin flip. Brad will be back on Sunday to wrap this weekend up nice and neat for you!

Big Steelers fan, so pick the Steelers in a close game. GB has been a bad red zone team all year, lots of yards, but trouble scoring.
The Roommate – 13.6M
Sanctum – 13.3M
The Kings Speech – 9.8M
No Strings Attached – 8.7M
The Green Hornet – 6.9M
i think everyone is waiting for anything associated with james cameron… enough to carry sanctum to the top. obviously he didn't direct, but your average american will hear his name and want to see it. i say 16.7 mil
1. THE ROOMMATE – $18.8 million
2. SANCTUM – $12.7 million
3. NO STRINGS ATTACHED – $8.3 million
4. KING'S SPEECH – $7.8 million
5. GREEN HORNET – $6.9 million
I say THE RITE drops like SEASON OF THE WITCH.
I won't be seeing anything this weekend. Nothing too good this month… :/
Have a fun Superbowl weekend everyone! :)
I will see Sanctum. I can't imagine it's as bad as people are saying. It seems like a typical trapped in location B movie.
Maybe not as bad as people are saying, perhaps even worse. It's downright terrible. Of course, I'll have my review up around midnight tonight with a full explanation.
You have not passed out an F since Cop Out (plenty of D's and D-). Will this join the list?
Yeah my thoughts don't really differentiate that much from Laremy's. I could see True getting a million or so less than what you're predicitng, but that's not much of a margin.
Pittsburgh, based on the fact that they are a big game team. Big Ben is just a playoff dominator.
I think the prediction for The Roommate is about there. I'd possibly go higher, since there is a ton of promotion for the film (and again, films like Swimfan & Obsessed have opened to surprisingly strong numbers using the "stalker becomes obsessed" angle). Either way, this week sucks.
Hell, this month sucks. I Am Number Four might be ok, hopefully Unknown and Hall Pass are too. I'll probably see Just Go With It because I'm a terrible person who hasn't missed a Sandler movie yet, but I'm sure it'll be bad. Literally the only thing that looks like it's worth watching is Drive Angry (3D). I've been waiting for a crazy ass, manic as hell Nic Cage performance since Bad Lieutenant. I hope this is it.
Two minor things. Go Packers!
Also, the name of the director of The Roommate is… Christian E. Christiansen. AMAZING
Having seen The Adjustment Bureau tonight I can tell you it's something to look forward to.
1: The Roommate – $20.7 million
2. Sanctum – $11.4 million
3. No Strings Attached – $8.4 million
4. King's Speech – $8.3 million
5. Green Hornet – $7.0 million
roomate-11 million
sanctum-7 million
not being to bullish this week they both look suckish
The only hope for Sanctum is the six months of trailers we have all seen for it. Maybe some have been brainwashed.
1.Sanctum 16 mil
2. The Rite 9.8 mil
3. The Roomate 9.1 mil
4. The King's Speech 8.8 mil
5. No Strings Attached 7.4 mil
1. The Roommate, $15.2 million. This should lose less of its audience to the Super Bowl than Sanctum.
2. Sanctum, $13.6 million. Tough call. The best comparisons in terms of content are probably The Descent and The Cave, but this has James Cameron and 3D plastered all over the adds. This is a $5,000 PTA, but I wouldn't be surprised in a pretty big swing either way. I do think the R (it seems like it could easily be PG-13) and going up against the Super Bowl will hurt this.
3. The King's Speech, $8.8 million. I've got this penciled in to win nine Oscars right now. It should lose the two supporting categories which means it maxes out at ten…can it sweep all those?
4. No Strings Attached, $8.7 million.
5. The Rite, $5.9 million.
6. The Green Hornet, $5.6 million. Steeper drop this weekend due to the Super Bowl.
7. True Grit, $5 million. This is still the fourth widest release in the country.
8. The Mechanic, $4.6 million. I've gotta think the Super Bowl will brutalize this.
9. Black Swan, $3.8 million.
10. The Dilemma, $3.1 million.
Super Bowl: I hate the Steelers, but they'll probably win in dramatic fashion at the end, just like they did two years ago.
Making The Roomate poster look like a horror poster when people know the movie is a thriller, really amps up the tension I expect from the film. I find the poster excellent for marketing.
I always knew Aaron Rodgers would be a top tier quarterback, and thought at the time that Green Bay actually made the right decision to move Farve along. But I'm going to have to get some Iron City beer and root for the Steelers. Maybe I'll root for Green Bay next year.
1. The Roommate – $19.45 million
2. Sanctum – $18 million
3. No Strings Attached – $9.26 million
4. The King's Speech – $8.44 million
5. The Rite – $6.67 million
6. The Green Hornet – $6.36 million
7. True Grit – $5.1 million
8. The Mechanic – $4.45 million
9. The Dilemma – $3.47 million
10. Black Swan – $3.08 million
Ugh what a crappy weekend… Time to check out Enter The Void instead.
The Roommate looks aboustly terrible and a laughsble film but sadly it will be numbee as Screen Gems has a history of their terrible horror moviews making number one (Prom Night, One Missed Call, When a Stranger Calls, The Stepfather and Obsessed) Want more? Hot girls but that's it. And PG-13? Come on.
Neal, Ori, sorry bout the Green Hornet thingy of whatever. What were ya thinkin?!! You HAD my script. Oh well…call me.
Alan
La Mesa
Sorry for being late but here are are my predictions:
1. Sanctum. $16.2 million
2. The Roomate. $14.9 million
3. No Strings Attached. $9.0 million
4. The King's Speech. $8.3 million
5. The Rite. $7.0 million
6. The Green Hornet. $6.9 million
7. True Grit. $5.5 million
8. The Mechanic. $5.1 million
9. Black Swan. $3.6 million
10. The Dilemma. $3.4 million
That Roommates poster complaint seems ridiculous to me. You don't think college roommate horror stories are fairly common, and that speaking to them will resonate? I think about half of all people I know have a freshman year roommate horror story.
