Box-Office Oracle: Feb. 27 – Mar. 1, 2009
COMMENTS
A whole mess of Jonas at the top this weekend.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 4 Weeks in a Row
I've got it making 75% of Hannah Montana's money back in February of 2008. I don't have much reasoning behind that though – I don't truly understand any of it.
Estimate: $38.1 million
I've got it falling the exact same amount as Meet the Browns. 62%. Okay, Browns actually fell 62.7%. But you get the idea.
Estimate: $15.6 million
I'm actively cheering against this one for a technical reason. You see, the Rope Oracle database only goes back so many weeks. Thus, for a film like Slumdog that been out for four months it requires more labor on my part to put it into the article. It's only like five more seconds of effort but I'm extremely lazy. So get out of the top ten already you bastard movie!
Oh, and congrats on that Best Picture win. I was pulling for you.
Estimate: $9.9 million
4. Coraline
$60.3m and rising! Oh yeah, I think we're gonna see a whole lot of stop motion 3-D in our future.
Estimate: $8.2 million
5. Taken
The tagline is "I don't know who you are but if you don't let my daughter go I will find you. I will kill you." Simple, clean, effective. Extra marketing points for Fox on this one.
Estimate: $7.3 million
I used to play the hell out of Street Fighter. And when I did Chun-Li was always my girl, because she was fast and could throw fireballs. I guess Ken was okay too. The red intimidated opponents I think.
Estimate: $6.8 million
Essentially only Watchmen comes out next week. Which means an awful lot of films are getting free rides in the top ten as studios take January through March off.
Estimate: $4.4 million
It made $4,745 in Curacao. And another $6,888 in Aruba. So you can write those countries off so far as respecting us ever again goes.
Estimate: $4.3 million
I heard that Isla Fisher was asking people not to hate her for this during interviews. It worked. I still like her.
Estimate: $3.7 million
10. Fired Up!
Can you believe the production budget was $20 million here? Seriously, wouldn't they have been better off just giving 20 filmmakers a million each and seeing what they came up with? Hell, I think The Wrestler was only $6m. Where did the money go fellas?
Estimate: $2.7 million
Got a prediction for next weekend? I think Watchmen will make $88.5m on its opening weekend. But I could be way off. Thoughts?

It wouldn't shock me to see Watchmen break the 90 to 100 million barrier. I'll guess 95.3 million and I say that with no strategy as to how I got that number, just throwing 95.3 out there.
Also, can we be done acting like The Jonas Brothers (and by extension Cyrus) are going to matter in 5 years? Please?
I just don't get the Jonas Brothers at all. I can see why Hannah is so big, but they don't dance, I can't think of a big signature hit song they have, and they are not that young. I will say it only does 50% of Hannah Montana. I remember last year trying to buy tickets for that movie opening weekend (they also said one week only at the time) and it was hard, and we had to sit on the front row because it was full.
Oh, did you count that "Coraline" is gone from all the 3D screens this week, so it might drop out.
And last, I am very interested how Watchman does. A comic book/novel no one ever heard of until last year, with no stars, R rated, that's 2 hours and 43 minutes? Very interesting.
pretty funny stuff on the slumdog part and i am rooting for coraline beacause the movie was amazing!
I'm saying 87.6 for the Watchmen, just hold me to that number.
I'd say 65-75 million opening weekend and 210-230 million total.
I have a bit of a bad hunch about "Watchmen"- I can't wait to see the movie, and I know it'll be awesome, I just think that box office wise, it'll be more like "Sin City" then "300".
They're doing a total bait-and-switch with the ads- promoting a flashy, violent superhero movie even though "Watchmen" is more of a study on the characters and how they react in a "real" society. When those who are out of the loop are duped, bad word of mouth will strike in, because dumb people will be mad that there "was too much talking and not enough fighting". I hope, I truly wish that this won't be the case, but I won't be surprised if it is.
I'm calling for a $50 million opening and it'll hit around $120-130 million for this scenario only, but I really hope it takes off and become a "300"-like phenomenon.
watchman will do good but fail(money wise) compared to other superhero films such as The Dark Knight and those awful spiderman movies and ironman, its the R rating and not many younger people knowing much about this comic
After a weak 4.8 million dollar friday, Jonas Brothers 3D Movie should only make about 17 million this weekend, a big disappointment compared to Hannah Montanta's 30 milion debut. Madea finsh 2nd with 14.5 and Slumdog should take in close to 10 million. Street Fighter debut in 6th with 5.5. Overall, pretty weak weekend as top 12 only make 90 million
I'm actually heartened to see Jonas Bros. do poorly. It was getting a little out of control there for a bit.
I agree with you Laremy, I glad Jonas Bros. didn't make that much. Think Watchmen should make around 87 million dollars itself next weekend. It will carry the load for the top 12.
