Box-Office Oracle: Feb. 20 – Feb. 22, 2009
The only real story is The Academy Awards, but we'll still take Madea for the win.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 3 Weeks in a Row
Madea's Family Reunion made $30m on its opening weekend back in 2006. I think the faltering economy hurts this one about $5m worth.
Estimate: $25.0 million
Horrors always face a big drop. I see around a 57% bleeding here.
Estimate: $17.7 million
3. Taken
I'll admit, I no longer know what to do with this title. It just keeps banking against this weak crowd. $152m worldwide and still rising.
Estimate: $14.1 million
Still, these guys have got to feel good. Their movie wasn't called Confessions of a Shopaholic, and that's a big win.
Estimate: $12.5 million
5. Coraline
It's shown very good staying power and neither of the new releases this weekend are in its demo. So it's another sunny projection.
Estimate: $10.1 million
6. Fired Up
It doesn't have many theaters… and it's not being heavily marketed. But someone will see it right? Say around $4k per theater worth?
Estimate: $8.4 million
It's got to drop at least 45%. Even though nothing else is coming out, I still say word o' mouth sinks it.
Estimate: $8.1 million
If they held The Oscars on Saturday then Slumdog would take this slot. But they hold them on Sunday, so I'm sticking with your boy Kevin James.
Estimate: $5.5 million
The real question is will this get a bounce next weekend? I think these crazy long Oscar release schedules will come back to haunt the studios at some point.
Estimate: $5.3 million
Pink Panther 2 could sneak up and grab the ten spot. Which should tell you just how hard studios are mailing Academy weekend in.
