Adam Sandler holds off Justin Bieber this weekend!

The streak is theoretically in jeopardy this weekend, as Justin Bieber's "documentary" takes on Adam Sandler's latest "comedy". Sorry, I couldn't resist the quotes, and as it turns out neither of these films is precisely what they seem, so let's break this thing down!
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row
Surprisingly decent, though you can feel a Sandler backlash starting. The general public is always a few films behind though, so there's some chance he'll be punished for Grown Ups here.

The strange part? The film is actually fairly funny at times, nothing so bad as the trailer would suggest. It's really odd, almost as if the marketing team was aiming for people who love "crotch hitting" comedy, as opposed to going for, you know, normal people. All I can note is that I laughed far more than I have in recent putrid films such as The Dilemma.

Will that be enough to grab the crown? It should be, as this has a wider demographic reach than the Bieber film, but the group is also far less likely to impulse buy. I also think they've really butchered the Aniston empathy factor by showing off Brookln Decker's assets on every trailer. Still, just under $10k per theater and win, which brings us to …

Prediction: $32.3 million

There are 10 million American females between the ages of 10 and 14. Let's chop 20 percent off that number to reflect the poverty line. We're down to 8 million, and at twelve dollars a ticket, something around 25 percent market saturation for Bieber feels about right. Some kids aren't into it, right?
Prediction: $25.5 million
It's all set for the family dollar, but it's far more cutesy than "good". So $5k per theater is about all I can do for it. Don't blame me, blame the lack of comedy inherent in gnomes.
Prediction: $13.5 million
A 54 percent drop, but the film only cost $16m to make.
Prediction: $6.9 million
Lacking theaters and likely miscast. If you want teen girl dollars you don't make a war film. If you want guy dollars you don't cast Channing Tatum. My prediction suggests they'll pay for those decisions this weekend.
Prediction: $6.45 million
People are still catching up with the Best Picture nominees so a smallish 25 percent dip is probable.
Prediction: $5.78 million
I might see it this weekend. The holds it has been putting up suggests at least a decent time.
Prediction: $4.26 million
Our biggest dipper of the weekend, well deserved.
Prediction: $4.06 million
A legit photo finish for ninth and tenth place.
Prediction: $2.97 million
If they can finagle another $60m or so internationally I'd say they are in good shape. Get to finagling!
Prediction: $2.95 million

That's the way I see it at least. How say you? Was I too hard on C-Tates? Do you like the Bieber nation's chances this weekend? Comment away, I'll be checking in and Brad will be back on Sunday to wrap this weekend up nice and neat.

It has a 5.8 out of 10 with 27k votes on IMDB, behind even Big Daddy and Chuck & Larry .

As I stated, these trends lag behind actual box office. You don't lose box office for the first bad film, you lose it down the road.

  4. I think Bieber might take it to be honest… What about all those parents that are going to be forced to attend with their 10-14 year olds… It'll be a sad day when it happens… But I think Bieber might come in at #1.

  6. Leandro Dubost

Is it too idyllic to expect that Justin Bieber will bomb like that Jonas Brothers concert movie?

  7. Liathach

This isn't strictly relevant, but there's an interesting interview with Kevin Macdonald, director of The Eagle, on the Collider site, in which he talks about casting Channing Tatum.

  8. "Eagle," does seem solid in reviews…

Just Go With It – 35 million.
Never Say Never – 27 million.

Of course Adam Sandler will win. A lot of people love him. I gotta even admit I love Adam Sandler. But Just Go With It has gotten bad reviews like Grown Ups(which I gotta admit I enjoyed). But I hate Justin Bieber. And his new movie will be 2nd.

Just Go With It, $35.5 million. I'd love to see Sandler do more dramatic stuff instead of the same films over and over again. I think he's showed at least some genuine dramatic talent in films like Spanglish, Reign Over Me, and Funny People, and I wish he'd do more stuff like that. Of course his comedies have been good for an average of around $140 million domestic over the last several years so maybe he just wants the steady check.

Never Say Never, $31 million. Sticking with a $10,000 PTA. This may outgross Miley, but I don't know which will be more attended.

Gnomeo and Juliet, $9 million. This should get burned. I honestly don't know why Disney's even releasing this now; it's gotten almost no advertising and they're obviously more focused on Mars Needs Moms next month (rightly so, as it's a homegrown project for them and probably has a much bigger budget). I guess they're betting on Valentine's Day to help them out.

The Eagle, $8 million. And sword/sandal/medieval/etc "epics" continue their slow but sure death. Gladiator was supposedly going to revive this genre eleven years ago, but I can't think of another film like this that's been a major success, except The Lord of the Rings films, which aren't even direct comparisons.

    The Roommate, $6 million.

No Strings Attached, $5.2 million. This should benefit from Just Go With It sellouts.

The King's Speech, $5 million. This should start to slip a little more now (it did last week), since I figure pretty much everyone who wants to see it and can has seen it by now, and it won't expand again except maybe after the Oscars.

    Sanctum, $4.2 million.

    The Green Hornet, $3.2 million.

    True Grit, $2.7 million.

The upcoming slate looks so unappealing that I'll likely be taking a break from theatres for a few more weeks. The next films I'm interested in are The Adjustment Bureau and Rango in March…though I might have to see Drive Angry if I have access to a 2D print.

Never Say Never $22.75 million plus whatever the Valentines Day bounce is. Some people are trying to tell me there will be no Valentines bounce because Valentine's Day is monday. So I'm going with that, but I'm not so sure.

    • mfan

At first I bought into the Bieber hype, but as time goes on, my estimate for his film kept/keeps going down. I may be a little high.

Channing Tatum discouraging the guy crowd? I don't think so…

In my opinion, I think the Eagle will attract the female audience because of its two leads. The only setback is the theater count.

  17. Going4it

Since I just heard that Justin was the most searched person/thing in the world online (more than Boobs even) and that he's bigger than Miley and she pulled in a huge 30some million opening box office I'm going out on a limb here but-t-t-t-t-t,

    1) Justin – Never say Never or whatever 35 million
    2) Just go with it 33 Million
    3)Gnomeo 18 million

    let's see how it goes.

    • mfan

Justin has had a good result for his tour, but his average ticket price was less than for Miley's Wonderworld tour. You have to remember that the Hannah Montana/Meet Miley Best of Both Worlds tour was the most popular tour of it's year, based on demand as expressed in the resale price of tickets. More in demand than everyone and anyone. Justin has had nothing like that.

Justin scored higher in search on google than Miley, but Miley scored number one of any person alive on Yahoo! There is no data combining searches for Bing, Google, Yahoo!, etc.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Justin took in about $2 million from the $30 dollar 100,000 seat preview. It hasn't been confirmed, but either The Hollywood Reporter is wrong, or Justin didn't sell out his preview.

And I believe that male teen idols are at a disadvantage for their concert films, because parents can get uncomfortable with their young girls having pretend boyfriend feelings for someone. Miley not only didn't have that problem, she was able to satisfy some of those feelings below the radar by having The Jonas Brothers as her opening act. It was truly the best of both worlds.

      We'll see.

  18. Stiggy

Given the alledged 3D Backlash, Just Go With It will win the weekend.

In the UK it isn't Sandler vs Bieber, Think more Adam Sandler vs Jeff Bridges, Rom-Com vs Western, Just Go With It vs True Grit.

Just Go With It will beat True Grit in the UK because of the consistant draw of Adam Sandler.

  19. 1. Justin Bieber – $34.8 million
    2. Just Go With It – $32.8 million
    3. Gnomeo & Juliet – $17.94 million
    4. The Eagle – $16.4 million
    5. The Roommate – $7.13 million
    6. The King's Speech – $6.08 million
    7. No Strings Attached – $5.61 million
    8. Sanctum – $4.73 million
    9. The Green Hornet – $3.21 million
    10. True Grit – $2.9 million

  20. Kid

    Just Go With It: 32mil
    Justin Beiber NSN: 27mil
    Gnomeo and Juliet: 12mil
    The Eagle: 10.5mil

  21. Stiggy

Sandler will beat Bieber because there's already beeen backlash about Bieber.
