Box-Office Oracle: Apr. 1 – Apr. 3, 2011

Russell Brand and James Mardsen will 'Hop' away with the title this weekend
Easter Sunday hits 20 days later (on April 24) this year, but that won't stop an Easter film from dominating this weekend. The perfectly pleasant PG film Hop will take the crown, and it should do so with ease.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row
| If you look at the numbers films like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Santa Clause put up, you'd figure Hop is in great shape. The only caveat? It's April. This number would actually set the record for PG openings in April, though Hannah Montana: The Movie opened higher with a G rating. The films that tend to truly bank in April are "summer" movies, Fast and Furious and Clash of the Titans come to mind. Still, I'm pulling for this one as it was refreshing to hear Russell Brand reigned in a bit. We'll go with $8,000 per theater and move along to … Prediction: $28.61 million | |
2. Source Code
I think The Adjustment Bureau and Limitless might have hurt it a bit. So I'm thinking something in the $7,000 range per theater, and with only 2,961 theaters to compete with it shouldn't mount a serious charge.
Prediction: $20.73 million
3. Insidious
Horror fans will come out this weekend, A Nightmare on Elm Street proved horror is viable in April. Plus the SXSW reviews started the buzz early.
Prediction: $13.24 million
4. Limitless
Quite a holdover last weeekend! This weekend's demographic competition should accelerate the bleed ever so slightly to 30 percent.
Prediction: $10.66 million
The previous version was really punished in its second weekend. Same deal for this one.
Prediction: $10.46 million
6. Sucker Punch
Speaking of punishment, I look for a dip between Watchmen and G.I. Joe for this title. Word of mouth has not been kind.
Prediction: $7.05 million
The budget was only $40m, which it will get near domestically this weekend, so hopefully Matt McConaughey translates overseas.
Prediction: $6.32 million
8. Rango
$200m worldwide, and it should pass Wild Wild West (not adjusted for inflation) domestically this weekend.
Prediction: $5.3 million
9. Paul
They've already cleared $30m internationally, so the $30m they've put up domestically means this won't end up being a debacle for Universal. Long live Pegg and Frost!
Prediction: $3.91 million
If you're keeping score at home The King's Speech's new PG-13 version will finish in 11th.
Prediction: $3.3 million
How say you? Am I going to get sucker punched for my Hop call? Is Source Code being underrated? And what do you make of Insidious? Brad will be back on Sunday to wrap this baby up, comments away!

im hoping for a hop bomb…
Why?
Hop-$35 million
Source Code-$20 million (I think 15 might be more reasonable)
1. Hop – $31.5M From what I understand, the film is tracking similar to Rango right now. I don't think it will get that opening weekend, but it will do well enough. I think the NBC promos will help it. Seems harmless enough.
2. Sourch Code – $22.8M And I hear that this one is tracking around The Adjustment Bureau, the reviews will help this one top $20M.
3. Insidious – $13.6M So, this one cost only $1M, wow. Instant money maker. And it's supposed to be pretty good.
4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid – $11M
5. Limitless – $10.3M
1. Hop: $33.4 million
2. Source Code: $25.8 million
3. Insidious: $14.1 million
4. Limitless: $10.9 million
5. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: $9.7 million
1. Hop- 22.8 million
2. Source Code- 15.5 million
3. Insidious- 12.2 million
4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid- 11.4 million
5. Limitless- 10.2 million
1. Hop, $28.6 million. I'm right there with Laremy on an $8,000 PTA.
2. Source Code, $22.2 million. $7,500 PTA. I've always thought this looks a bit silly, but it's getting such good reviews I almost feel like I have to see it. Of course The Adjustment Bureau looked a bit silly too, but Matt Damon and Emily Blunt are much bigger draws for me than Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan.
3. Insidious, $12 million.
4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, $10.7 million. The last one fell hard against How to Train Your Dragon, this one will fall hard against Hop.
5. Limitless, $9 million. It has to fall harder against Source Code.
6. The Lincoln Lawyer, $7.5 million. This, however, should continue to hold well.
7. Sucker Punch, $6.7 million. 65% drop. Brutalized.
8. Rango, $5.3 million.
9. Paul, $4.7 million.
10. Battle: Los Angeles, $3.8 million.
I will make one prediction. Over 40 million for Hop.
1. Hop – $30.4M
2. Source Code – $22M
3. Insidious – $12M
4. Limitless – $10M
5. Diary 2 – $9.8M
6. Sucker Punch – $8.7M
Next week Your Highness takes the crown!
Next week Arthur takes the crown!
Source Code could surprise. Beware.
1. Hop – 24 million.
2. Source Code – 18 million.
3. Wimpy Kid 2 – 13 million.
4. Limitless – 11 million.
5. Sucker Punch – 10 million.
I feel as if everyone is very low on the opening gross of HOP. Only 28 million? So what if it is the first 3 days of April. It screams Alvin appeal. Plus How to Train Your Dragon put up 29 million in the first weekend of April. Ice Age 2 also opened on March 31st, so it had 2 days in April and it did 68 million. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes north of 40-45 million. The kids are starving for a movie this year so far. All they have had is Gnomeo and Rango(and this wasn't really for kids)
Well took the kids to Hop. Wanted to hate it, but it was actually good for a …well i liked it more than chipmunks. And there was a bunch of applause twice in the movie! I dont know, I think if word of mouth picks up fast it could do close to 50 million this weekend!
I was hoping that Battle LA would have made more than 100 million. It was a pretty good alien invasion film. No 2011 seem to be doing all that great. We have no break out films of the year yet. Hopefully summer will make up for this, and people will start coming out in droves. I can't wait for Thor, Priest, the X-Men prequel, Captain America, Rise of the Apes, Green Lantern and of course the final Harry Potter film! I hope these films don't suffer this slump.
Gnomeo and Juliet and Limitless broke out
Yeah they have both done better than expected, but I think he means like big successes like Alice in Wonderland, Clash of the Titans, and How to train your Dragon were this time last year. I hope this summer is hiuge and does make up for the slow year thus far. There are going to be so many good movies! I can't wait to see Priest, X-men, Cap America, and Harry Potter!
